Community leaders and active citizens joined together in Holyoke last week to start the conversation about a greener future for Mount Tom power station. With more than 30 individuals in the room representing community groups, labor, and environmental organizations it's fair to say that round one of the conversation was a success.

Now it's full steam ahead to the next round of the community conversation scheduled for Saturday, March 26, in Holyoke Community College (see side-bar to the right). You can read some of the key facts and watch the local TV news reports by clicking here.

What the Danes are doing

Nobody knows for sure what the future holds for Mount Tom. That's why we're having a community conversation, so that the people who live in and around Holyoke can take greater control over the decisions that help shape their lives.

As we create our communal vision for a post-coal Mount Tom -- a vision that involves clean energy and green jobs -- we can look at what's happening with infrastructure projects elsewhere.

In Copenhagen, for example, city officials and designers are imagining an energy plant that combines functionality with beauty. They want to integrate the facility into the life of the city, making it a place that people will come to look at, study in, and ski on.
