Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant back online Saturday

Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant back online Saturday

Plant went offline during the blizzard on January 27
Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth is back online after being reconnected to the grid Saturday. In a statement from the plant's parent company Entergy, Senior Communications Specialist Lauren Burm said Pilgrim began generating electricity at 2:40 p.m.

The nuclear facility has been offline since the two main power transmission lines were knocked out during the blizzard in the early morning hours of January 27.

Following the storm-related shut down, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced that it would be sending a special investigation team to Plymouth. Although the transmission lines were restored within a few days of the shutdown, the plant has remained offline for maintenance that according to Entergy, can only be done when the plant is offline.

The six-member NRC team arrived at Pilgrim last Monday. According to an NRC release, the team was tasked with "reviewing equipment issues that occurred during the shutdown, including the partial loss of off-site power, the failure of a condensate pump motor associated with the plant's High-Pressure Coolant Injection (HPCI) system and the malfunctioning of one of the plant's four safety relief valves."

NRC Regional 1 Administrator Dan Dorman said, "The Pilgrim reactor was safely shut down. Nevertheless, we want to examine more closely the challenges that surfaced during the event, including safety system and equipment problems and the loss of the two off-site power lines."

Several groups including Cape Downwinders continue to call for the closure of the Pilgrim plant. Hours before Pilgrim came back online Saturday, Cape Downwinders held a Valentine Vigil at Plymouth Memorial Park asking the NRC to keep the Pilgrim shut down.

"Pilgrim is continuing its investigation into storm Juno and is cooperating fully with the NRC in its review," said Burm.
