S.Korea, US to lift warhead weight limit on South Korean missiles | 04 Sept 2017 | The US agreed to allow South Korea deploy heavier warheads on its missiles after the latest nuclear test by Pyongyang. The existing limit set in a missile pact between Washington and Seoul is 500 kg. The agreement to lift the weight limit was reached by US President Donald Trump and his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in in a phone call on Monday, the South Korean presidential office said in a statement. With tensions rising on the Korean peninsula, Donald Trump also gave "conceptual approval" for billions worth of US weapons to be sold to South Korea. 
 
Trump, Mattis, Mnuchin warn North Korea of 'overwhelming' military response, halted trade | 03 Sept 2017 | President Trump suggested Sunday, after another underground nuclear test by North Korea, that he’ll halt trade with any country doing business with the rogue nation, as two members of the president's Cabinet issued tough warnings of their own. "The United States is considering, in addition to other options, stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea," tweeted Trump, in response to the regime of Kim Jong Un claiming to have detonated a hydrogen bomb underground. 
 
South Korea, U.S. plan more drills after North Korea nuclear test rattles globe | 02 Sept 2017 | South Korea said on Monday it was preparing fresh military drills with its ally the United States and ramping up its ballistic missile defenses in response to North Korea's sixth and most powerful nuclear test a day earlier...South Korea's air force and army conducted exercises involving long-range air-to-surface missiles and ballistic missiles on Monday, the joint chiefs of staff said in a statement. More drills were being prepared with U.S. forces in the South, it said. The South's environment ministry will also announce on Monday its approval of an environmental assessment report for the deployment of a controversial U.S. anti-missile defense system, a ministry official told Reuters.
 
N Korea blast 'five times bigger than Nagasaki' | 03 Sept 2017 | North Korea has detonated a hydrogen bomb with "perfect success", the secretive country's state media has announced. Earlier, Japan confirmed its near neighbour had conducted a sixth nuclear test. Japan's meteorological agency said the resulting tremors were at least 10 times as powerful as North Korea's previous nuclear test, last September. Experts estimated that blast to have been around 10 kilotons.
 
North Korea Says It Has Developed Hydrogen Bomb to Suit ICBM | 02 Sept 2017 | North Korea claims that it now has a more-developed hydrogen nuclear weapon that can be mounted on a new intercontinental ballistic missile. The bomb is a multi-functional thermonuclear weapon adjustable from tens of kiloton to hundreds of kiloton and can be be detonated even at high altitudes for an electromagnetic pulse attack, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said. North Korea last tested a nuclear device about a year ago.
 
Hurricane Irma a Category 4, Florida Governor Scott declares a state of emergency | 04 Sept 2017 | Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday afternoon as Hurricane Irma strengthened into a Category 4 storm. According to the National Hurricane Center's 5 p.m. advisory Monday, Irma grew to 130 mph sustained winds as it chugged at 13 mph through the Caribbean. Irma's projected to turn west-northwest by the end of the day Tuesday, moving on an overall track that increased the possibility that South Florida will feel its effects, if not take a direct hit. It's also supposed to strengthen over the next two days.
 
Irma is coming: Caribbean braces for the hurricane which is expected to reach land by Tuesday - and it now officially poses a threat to the East Coast --The storm is currently a Category 3 but expected to reach Category 4 by landfall | 04 Sept 2017 | Hurricane Irma now officially poses a threat to the United States as islands at the eastern end of the Caribbean Sea are making preparation for its arrival. The storm could hit the area as soon as Tuesday, and is expected to hit the East Coast of the mainland US later this week...The US National Hurricane Center said the center of the storm could near that region late Tuesday. Currently Irma is a Category three hurricane, but its intensity has been fluctuating over the past few days.
 
Hurricane Irma remains potential threat to the East Coast, possibly matching Harvey's wind strength | 02 Sept 2017 | On the heels of Hurricane Harvey...attention is turning to the next threat, Hurricane Irma [currently, at Category 2 strength with sustained winds of 110 mph]. As highlighted Friday, this storm will definitely be one to watch over the next several days -- particularly along the East Coast -- despite the high uncertainty in impacts at this juncture. The Global Forecast System (GFS, American model) has been painting an ominous picture over the past few model runs, swinging Irma around a large blocking high-pressure system anchored over the central Atlantic. It ultimately brings the storm up the East Coast.
 
Gov. Jerry Brown declares state of emergency in Los Angeles County as fire continues to rage in Verdugo Mountains | 03 Sept 2017 | Gov. Jerry Brown on Sunday declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles County as firefighters continue to battle a 5,900-acre brush fire in the Verdugo Mountains north of downtown Los Angeles that has destroyed three homes and shut down a stretch of the 210 Freeway. The governor’s declaration will ensure that state and federal assistance will be provided as quickly as possible. It came at the urging of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who said the fire is the largest in the city’s history in terms of sheer acreage.
 
Biggest wildfire in LA's history: More than 700 are forced to evacuate as 8,000 acres are scorched in blaze and hundreds of firefighters struggle to cope due to 100F heatwave and 'very erratic' winds | 03 Sept 2017 | The largest fire in Los Angeles history is engulfing thousands of acres of land and forcing residents to evacuate homes throughout the county. The fire, dubbed the La Tuna Fire after the canyon where it erupted, has already burned through 8,000 acres of land, and the heatwave in the area along with erratic winds are proving major obstacles for firefighters trying control the blaze. The fire broke out Friday and has already forced the partial closure of the 210 Freeway, a major thoroughfare.
 
Death toll from Hurricane Harvey reaches at least 60 | 04 Sept 2017 | Officials now blame at least 60 deaths on Harvey after the storm dumped many feet of rain on several counties in a matter of days. Many of those deaths were people drowning in flash floods or water-logged roads. But county emergency management departments across southeast Texas tell The Associated Press they are including people in their storm-related death totals who died from indirect complications of Harvey.
 
Trump sees 'lot of love' in Texas flood shelter | 02 Sept 2017 | Donald Trump has returned to Texas to meet volunteers and victims of Storm Harvey, which brought record rainfall and catastrophic flooding to one of America's largest cities. The President touched down in Air Force One with First Lady Melania Trump to see the devastation wrought by the tropical storm. He visited Houston, the state's biggest city, before making his way to Lake Charles in neighbouring Louisiana. Both have seen mass evacuations because of the historic flooding. Mr Trump's first stop was a shelter, where he visited a section reserved for child survivors and listened to their stories.
 
US military sends warships, aircraft to Texas --'Dual-status command' established | 31 Aug 2017 | With floodwaters from Tropical Storm Harvey swallowing entire Texas cities, the US military is mobilizing its resources from states across the country to help local law enforcement and civilian volunteers in the rescue effort. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has activated the entire Texas National Guard, which is made up of roughly 12,000 troops. State, local and military rescue units have plucked thousands of stranded residents from the water and deluged homes. On Sunday, the Defense Department and Abbott agreed to establish a "dual-status command" that would allow a single commander for both federal and state forces overseeing and coordinating the response efforts.
 
Arkema backtracks, refuses to provide chemical inventory to the public | 01 Sept 2017 | Arkema, the company that owns the chemical plant in Crosby on the verge of more explosions, is refusing to provide a chemical inventory and facility map to the public, one day after promising to provide the information...Late Thursday night, the company provided a list, detailing the names of the chemicals on the site. It did not provide the amounts of the chemicals, where those chemicals were located or in what types of containers in which the chemicals were stored. It also refused to specify where even more potentially dangerous chemicals are located on site.
 
Huge fire breaks out at Arkema chemical plant in Texas | 01 Sept 2017 | Thick black smoke and towering orange flames shot up Friday from a flooded Houston-area chemical plant where highly unstable compounds blew up a day earlier after losing refrigeration. It was the second day that flames and smoke could be seen at the Arkema plant in Crosby. Arkema says Harvey's floodwaters engulfed its backup generators and knocked out the refrigeration necessary to keep the organic peroxides from degrading and catching fire. After Thursday's fire, Arkema had said it had eight more containers that could blow up.
 
2 explosions reported at flooded Texas chemical plant | 31 Aug 2017 | A flooded chemical plant near Houston that was left without power was rocked by two explosions early Thursday -- unleashing noxious fumes that sent a police deputy to the hospital, officials said. Arkema Inc. reported that Harris County officials notified it about the blasts, which sent black smoke spewing from the plant in Crosby, about 25 miles northeast of storm-ravaged Houston. The Harris County Sheriff's Office said one deputy had been taken to a hospital after inhaling fumes from the plant and nine others drove themselves to seek treatment as a precaution.

During heavy rainfall from Hurricane Harvey, the Arkema plant at Crosby lost refrigeration of chemical compounds which need to be kept cool, and there is no way to prevent a possible fire, the company said..."Materials could now explode and cause a subsequent and intense fire," CEO Richard Rower told Reuters news agency. "The high water that exists on site, and the lack of power, leave us with no way to prevent it."
 
118,000 people and no drinking water: Flooded Beaumont cannot determine when it will restore water supply --The city of Beaumont, Texas, lost its main pump station and its secondary water source. | 31 Aug 2017 | Early Thursday morning, officials of Beaumont, Texas, announced the city lost both the primary and secondary sources for its water supply system. "Due to rising waters of the Neches River caused by Tropical Storm Harvey, the City of Beaumont has lost service from the main pump station," Beaumont fire rescue captain Brad Penisson said in a statement. Located near the Louisiana border on the Gulf Coast, the city of nearly 120,000 residents will be without water until after floodwaters recede and officials can analyze the extent of the damage. "There is no way to determine how long this will take at this time," Penisson said.
 
Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas moving patients due to failed water pump | 31 Aug 2017 | (Beaumont) The City of Beaumont has lost its water supply after rising waters due to Tropical Storm Harvey knocked out the systems main input pump. The city is anticipated to lose water pressure in the system in the next three to four hours according to a release from the City of Beaumont. The Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas began transferring patients Thursday morning because of the pump failure.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders announced the news at a briefing to reporters Thursday, days after record flooding from the storm in Houston killed at least 35 people and drove tens of thousands out of their homes. "Thank you to all of the brave first responders and volunteers from around the United States helping with the ongoing rescue and relief efforts in Texas," the president tweeted Thursday.
 
'God drowned all the neo-Nazis of Texas': French magazine Charlie Hebdo prints controversial cover depicting Harvey victims as white supremacists | 31 Aug 2017 | The cover of the latest edition of satirical French magazine rag Charlie Hebdo depicts Texans who drowned in the flood waters of Tropical Storm Harvey as Nazis, it was reported on Wednesday. 'God Exists! He Drowned All the Neo-Nazis of Texas,' the controversial weekly magazine writes for its cover story. The cartoon on the front page shows a torrential downpour drowning a group of people carrying flags with the Nazi swastikas. Some of the victims on the cover are under water as they do the Nazi salute with their arms outstretched at a 45-degree angle.

Mattis begins sending additional troops to Afghanistan | 31 Aug 2017 | Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says he has signed orders to begin deploying additional troops to Afghanistan to carry out President Donald Trump's new war strategy. Mattis told reporters Thursday at the Pentagon he will not reveal details until he briefs members of Congress next week. He would not say how many additional troops are deploying or what their exact roles will be.
 
Dozens of Al-Nusra, ISIS-affiliated jihadists entered Germany posing as refugees - report | 03 Sept 2017 | Several dozen Syrian extremists linked to both [John McCain's best buds] al-Nusra Front and ISIS, who committed "numerous massacres" of civilians and captives, have sought asylum in Germany, Der Spiegel reports. Some 60 members of a Syrian militant group called Liwa Owais al-Korani or the Owais al-Korani Brigade arrived to Germany as refugees, Der Spiegel reports, citing sources within the German security services. The Owais al-Korani Brigade initially fought on the side of the Free Syrian Army but then switched sides and joined al-Nusra Front (now self-styled Jabhat Fateh al-Sham) - Al Qaeda's affiliate in Syria, the weekly says, adding that the group also fought alongside Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL [but still I-CIA-SIS]) in the Raqqa province for months.

Trump has wrestled for months with whether to do away with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, known as DACA...The president's expected announcement is likely to shore up his base, which rallied behind his broader campaign message about the importance of enforcing the country's immigration laws and securing the border.
 
Zuckerberg Group: 700K American Job Openings If DACA Ends | 31 Aug 2017 | A study by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's open borders organization revealed that if an Obama-created amnesty program for young undocumented immigrants is ended, it would open nearly 700,000 American jobs. Zuckerberg's FWD dot us group - a pro-immigration lobbying group - released the study with the intention to show the hardships of ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, where more than 850,000 young undocumented immigrants have been given temporary amnesty would have on the American economy. The study unintentionally revealed how many more job opportunities American workers would have if President Trump were to repeal DACA, as he promised his supporters he would do. According to the FWD dot us study, if DACA is repealed it would mean potentially 700,000 American jobs could open up for American citizens.

I would never try to respond to every critic, for, as the late O.W. Crane often admonished me: "If you stop for every barking dog, your path will never end."
