Mass. board suspends plastic surgeon’s medical  license after he’s arrested with an arsenal of illegal
The board determined he “poses an immediate and serious threat to the public health, safety and welfare."

A plastic surgeon has been suspended from practicing in Massachusetts after he was arrested in New York earlier this month with an arsenal of weapons.

The Massachusetts Board of Medicine called an emergency meeting Tuesday regarding Matthew Bonanno’s Aug. 12 arrest. It suspended his license after determining he “poses an immediate and serious threat to the public health, safety and welfare,” a statement said. New York lists Bonanno’s medical license as inactive.

Police said a tipster called them after overhearing Bonanno make threats toward his estranged wife and her family at a bar in Tuckahoe, New York. The caller believed he was armed.

Officers arrested the 47-year-old at Growlers Beer Bistro, where they found he was in illegal possession of a loaded Glock semi-automatic handgun, a release said. Then they found the stockpile of weapons in his car.

Bonanno had apparently amassed more than 1,600 rounds of ammunition, five loaded assault rifles, three handguns, 29 high-capacity loaded magazines, a stun gun, ballistic body armor, a ballistic helmet, skull-printed face masks, military-style knives, four brass knuckles, and more — just in the car.

Searches of his two New York residences found another “large cache” of weapons, authorities said, including more illegal assault rifles, unlicensed handguns, high-capacity magazines, smoke grenades, and other weapons.

Bonnano was remanded without bail following his arraignment last week, and Westchester County Jail records indicate he is still being held.

Records show Bonanno worked at Sono Bello Body Contour Centers in New York, but he does not currently appear on the company’s online list of doctors.

Bonanno had only been licensed to practice in Massachusetts since March. He can appeal his Massachusetts suspension within seven days, according to the medical board.
