Timeout on Liquified Natural Gas Exports

How will our new Energy Secretary respond to the battle over fracking? Dr. Ernest Moniz was confirmed as the new Secretary of Energy this week, and you can be sure the fracking lobby has already started to push their dirty energy agenda. We know what they want: lax regulations, more drilling and more profits. What we don't know is how Secretary Moniz will respond. Dr. Moniz will need to hear from us if he is going to protect the environment and public health when deciding on fracking and liquified natural gas (LNG) exports. Make sure that Secretary Moniz knows that while the industry has the lobbyists, we have the support of hundreds of thousands of Americans who want to ensure clean air and water for ourselves and our children. Tell Secretary Moniz that the environment and health must be a priority. Dr. Moniz has been described as an "all of the above" thinker on energy policy, and has talked about natural gas as a "bridge" to renewable energy.1 Dr. Moniz will have to decide where he stands on fracking and LNG quickly: 25 proposals are pending that could jointly export up to 45 percent of U.S. natural gas production. We know the gas industry is going to make a full-court press to get him to approve all these proposals. Help send 25,000 comments to Sec. Moniz to make health and safety a priority when it comes to fracking and LNG exports. Fracking is not a "bridge" to a better energy future. It is a dirty and dangerous process that endangers our health and safety. Proposals currently pending with DOE would increase fracking to meet both foreign and domestic needs. More fracking means more pollution and more health impacts. Fracked gas will be extracted from our lands and shipped overseas, lining the pockets of the oil and gas companies, increasing costs to heat our homes, and making our communities sick. Tell Secretary Moniz: wait to authorize any new LNG exports until you’ve fully considered the real costs to our health and the environment. Secretary Moniz will be hearing from industry lobbyists in droves in the coming weeks. This is our opportunity to counter them by showing just how many of us are opposed to expanded fracking and LNG exports. Send your message to Secretary Moniz now! T. Boone Pickens Promotes Wind, LNG

USA Today reports Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens wants to supplant oil with wind

and has created an aggressive advertising campaign to do so.

Of the economic impact of US thirst for imported oil, Mr. Pickens had this to say:

"We're paying $700 billion a year for foreign oil. It's breaking us as a nation, and I want to elevate that question to the presidential debate, to make it the No. 1 issue of the campaign this year," Pickens says.

"This is not about Republicans vs. Democrats," Pickens says. "This is about saving our country from the ruination of spending $700 billion a year on oil imports. Ninety days after the oil hits our shores, it's all burned up, and we've got nothing to show for it. But they (foreign oil producers) still have our money. It's killing our economy."

To those who believe we can drill our way out of our dilemma and dismiss Peak World Oil Theory, Mr. Boone, who made his fortune in oil, had this to say:

Pickens is an outspoken believer in the so-called peak oil theory that holds that maximum world production has peaked at about 85 million barrels a day — vs. current demand of about 86 million barrels a day — and will never rise much above that even with lots of new drilling and production.

It makes the well-funded opposition to Cape Wind that has successfully delayed construction for almost 8 years, that much more foolish. Time for the Commonwealth to move forward with sensible solutions.

Middleboro has an LNG station in its midst. Maybe it's time to include that in the Town's future plans.
