MBTA eyes fare hike next year, but parking fee increases could come sooner

CommonWealth Magazine’s Bruce Mohl and the Globe’s Adam Vaccaro report that the T’s oversight board is now eyeing a probable fare hike in 2019 – after this fall’s elections, it should be noted – rather than increase them later this year. But the board is still looking at ways to reduce spending and raise revenues to plug an immediate deficit – and that could mean parking-lot fee increases. The board is also looking how to raise new and additional revenues over the long-term.

Everyone has an opinion about the T …

Callie Crossley at WGBH and RenĂ©e Loth at the Globe both have some advice for the MBTA and both share this view, among other opinions: The T had better get its act together or ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft are going to eat its lunch.
Btw: A union representing T workers, the Office & Professional Employees International Union Local 453, also has an opinion: It thinks Democrat Jay Gonzalez should be the next governor ultimately overseeing the transit agency. SHNS’s Michael Norton (pay wall) has more on the union endorsement.

Anti-violence rally will take aim at Smith & Wesson plant

As thousands of Bay State students prepare to join Wednesday’s nationwide school walk out, a group of activists in Springfield say they’ll take their case to the gates of the Smith & Wesson facility in the city, Patrick Johnson reports at MassLive. Organizers say they’re targeting the company because of its role in manufacturing the AR-15, the assault-style weapon used in the Florida school shooting last month.

POLITICO Massachusetts Playbook: PA-18's Massachusetts connection — 2019 FARE hikes? — SNOW pushes election deadlines

- "Next T fare hike likely in mid-2019," by Bruce Mohl, CommonWealth Magazine: "The MBTA's Oversight Board indicated on Monday that it plans to raise fares in the middle of next year and the chairman of the board said a debate about new, additional revenues for the transit authority could take place in three years. The comments about revenues came during a debate at the Fiscal and Management Control Board about the MBTA budget for fiscal 2019, which begins July 1. T officials forecasted that the authority's revenues will increase 2.2 percent next year while expenses will go up 2.5 percent."

- "Markey wants to get other states to adopt Mass. get-tough gun laws," by Matt Stout, Boston Globe: "Riding a revitalized push to address gun safety, US Senator Edward J. Markey on Monday unveiled legislation designed to push other states to adopt Massachusetts' get-tough laws, including requiring all gun owners to be licensed and giving local police chiefs the power to reject problem applicants. The legislation, which Markey said he'll file Tuesday, aims to extend the Massachusetts legal blueprint across the country by using Department of Justice grants to encourage states to harden their own laws. "

DAY  LATE CHARLIE RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION WAKES UP! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN CHARLIE?

- "In Baker's New $610M Economic Dev. Bill, Tax Credit And A Call For Permanent Sales Tax Holiday," by Michael P. Norton, State House News Service: "To foster growth around the state, the bill adds to the state's debt load with a $300 million capital allocation to the MassWorks infrastructure program, $100 million for a new regional program in which the state and communities would partner on 'high-impact projects,' and $50 million apiece for saltwater dredging and to build maritime economies. Baker has steered cleared of pushing broad-based tax cuts to propel the economy, but in his new bill he calls for a new apprenticeship tax credit designed to spur companies to train and hire employees in health care, manufacturing and information technology - fields the administration says are hungry for qualified workers."
