It's time to remove BIG MONEY from politics and elect candidates who protect ALL Americans, not just the wealthy.

Republican Senator Susan Collins just killed our only chance this year to overturn Citizens United in the Senate.

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate voted on the "Democracy for All" amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which would repeal the awful Citizens United and McCutcheon decisions. This all-important amendment would have limited the influence of millionaires and billionaires on our politics and made it clear that money is not speech.

It failed. It didn't pass because Senator Susan Collins from Maine and her fellow Republicans killed it. Susan Collins is proving once again she's not the moderate independent leader she claims. She chose to side with Mitch McConnell, Tea Party Republicans and billionaires like the Koch brothers over her constituents, as she's done so many times before.

America deserves a Senator who will stand up for our democracy. That's why DFA has endorsed Shenna Bellows, the progressive champion who is taking on Susan Collins in this year's Maine Senate race.

We can repeal Citizens United and get big money out of politics -- but we have to replace Republicans like Susan Collins with more Elizabeth Warren Democrats like Shenna Bellows. Will you help Shenna Bellows defeat Susan Collins by donating $3 to her campaign today?

Citizens United and similar cases relied on a flawed Supreme Court decision from 1976, Buckley v. Valeo, that argued campaign donations are the same thing as free speech. So to repeal Citizens United and Buckley v. Valeo and make it clear that campaign donations can and should be regulated, we have to amend the constitution. Sixteen states, more than 550 cities and towns, and millions of Americans -- including DFA members -- have signed on in support of that amendment.

Republican Susan Collins helped kill that amendment on Thursday. It's not surprising -- even though Collins talks like a moderate, she consistently sides with the Washington Republican extremists and Wall Street billionaires over the middle class. If we can hold the Senate with progressive champions like Shenna Bellows and unseat Republicans like Susan Collins in Maine -- we have a much better chance of passing the amendment next year.

DFA has endorsed Shenna Bellows for Senate because she knows that money isn't speech, and she'll fight to make sure that all Maine families, not just Washington insiders and Wall Street billionaires, get a real say in our democracy. She can win, but only if we can mobilize enough voters on the ground to defeat Collins' big money.
