Notorious Union-Buster, Fed Ex, Paid $0 In Taxes Last Year Thanks To Trump’s Tax Cuts

Think the system is rigged in favor of corporate giants? You would be right if you were talking about Fed Ex. The company, which is no friend of labor given its solid reputation of union-busting, paid nothing in taxes.
“In the 2017 fiscal year, FedEx owed more than $1.5 billion in taxes. The next year, it owed nothing. What changed was the Trump administration’s tax cut — for which the company had lobbied hard.
The public face of its lobbying effort, which included a tax proposal of its own, was FedEx’s founder and chief executive, Frederick Smith, who repeatedly took to the airwaves to champion the power of tax cuts. ‘If you make the United States a better place to invest, there is no question in my mind that we would see a renaissance of capital investment,’ he said on an August 2017 radio show hosted by Larry Kudlow, who is now chairman of the National Economic Council.
Four months later, President Trump signed into law the $1.5 trillion tax cut that became his signature legislative achievement. FedEx reaped big savings, bringing its effective tax rate from 34 percent in fiscal year 2017 to less than zero in fiscal year 2018, meaning that, overall, the government technically owed it money. But it did not increase investment in new equipment and other assets in the fiscal year that followed, as Mr. Smith said businesses like his would.
Nearly two years after the tax law passed, the windfall to corporations like FedEx is becoming clear. A New York Times analysis of data compiled by Capital IQ shows no statistically meaningful relationship between the size of the tax cut that companies and industries received and the investments they made. If anything, the companies that received the biggest tax cuts increased their capital investment by less, on average, than companies that got smaller cuts.
FedEx’s financial filings show that the law has so far saved it at least $1.6 billion. Its financial filings show it owed no taxes in the 2018 fiscal year overall. Company officials said FedEx paid $2 billion in total federal income taxes over the past 10 years.
As for capital investments, the company spent less in the 2018 fiscal year than it had projected in December 2017, before the tax law passed. It spent even less in 2019. Much of its savings have gone to reward shareholders: FedEx spent more than $2 billion on stock buybacks and dividend increases in the 2019 fiscal year, up from $1.6 billion in 2018, and more than double the amount the company spent on buybacks and dividends in fiscal year 2017.”

Teachers Irate as Bloomberg Likens Union to the N.R.A.

Teachers Irate as Bloomberg Likens Union to the N.R.A.

Of all the polarizing things Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has said and done over the years, from banning large sugary drinks to supporting congestion pricing, few have generated the sort of viral backlash that has unexpectedly mounted after his weekly radio show on Friday.
The mayor had embarked on a lengthy stream of consciousness on the need to negotiate a new teacher evaluation plan with the United Federation of Teachers. Toward the end, Mr. Bloomberg, almost as an aside, likened the teachers’ union to groups like the National Rifle Association and others in which he said a few leaders were out of sync with large numbers of rank-and-file members.
“It’s typical of Congress, it’s typical of unions, it’s typical of companies, I guess, where a small group is really carrying the ball and the others aren’t necessarily in agreement,” Mr. Bloomberg said to the program host, John Gambling. “The N.R.A. is another place where the membership, if you do the polling, doesn’t agree with the leadership.”
The comparison drew somewhat of a muted response. Michael Mulgrew, the president of the union, issued a one-sentence statement later on Friday saying the remark was “completely inappropriate” and indicative of the continuing difficulty in the union’s relationship with the mayor.

Tesla worker: long hours, low pay and unsafe conditions

Tesla worker: long hours, low pay and unsafe conditions

FREMONT >> Disgruntled Tesla employees have reached out to the United Auto Workers, claiming they work long hours for low pay under unsafe conditions while the electric vehicle company sets aggressive production deadlines.
California lawmakers have also begun to question Tesla for making its employees sign broad confidentiality agreements they say chill worker communications.
The complaints bring increased scrutiny and potential union organizing to Tesla as it attempts a massive expansion to reach new customers with mass-produced, lower-cost vehicles. Tesla is headquartered in Palo Alto and has more than 5,000 non-union workers at its factory in Fremont.
Tesla said in a statement the complaints are coming from professional union-organizers. In the statement, the company pointed out that it is the largest manufacturing employer in California.
“The safety and job satisfaction of our employees here at Tesla has always been extremely important to us,” a Tesla spokesman said. “We have a long history of engaging directly with our employees on the issues that matter to them, and we will continue to do so because it’s the right thing to do.”
Jose Moran, a production worker at the Fremont plant, wrote in an online blog post that workers typically earn between $17 and $20 per hour, below the national average for a U.S. autoworker of $25.58 per hour.
Moran has been with the company for four years, and says he’s proud of Tesla and the work he has done to produce innovative, electric vehicles. But even with a steady paycheck, he said in the post, it’s hard to make ends meet in the Bay Area. He commutes about three hours a day to work, and typically puts in 60-70 hours per week.
“Ironically, many of my coworkers who have been saying they are fed up with the long hours at the plant also rely on the overtime to survive financially,” Moran wrote.
A few months ago, six of the eight members of Moran’s team were on medical leave from work-related injuries, he wrote.
“I hear coworkers quietly say that they are hurting but they are too afraid to report it for fear of being labeled as a complainer or bad worker by management,” Moran wrote.
Tesla employees produce the all-electric Model S and Model X vehicles at the factory. The company is making a $1 billion expansion to start production of the Model 3, a less-expensive sedan designed for a broader market.
In a letter, five California assembly members also questioned Tesla CEO Elon Musk about the confidentiality agreement all employees are required to sign.
“The breadth of the agreement appears to violate employee rights under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) by both promulgating overly-broad work rules directed at employees’ union or concerted activities,” the assembly members wrote in a Jan. 10 letter.
Tesla lawyer Todd Maron replied in a letter that the company respected their workers’ rights to speak freely, but wanted to curb unauthorized disclosures about product launches and vehicle features.

RSN: Garrison Keillor | Christmas Lives On

THE GOOD THAT RSN DOES - We began in progressive publishing over a decade ago. In fact as George W. Bush assumed control of the White House. Since that time every news publication with a significant online presence has copied, in part or in whole our approach to publishing. RSN brings innovation, and leadership. We serve over a million readers per month, tens of thousands of which are low-income. We do it all on public funding without any assistance from powerful interests. That's important, because often those powerful interests are at the root of the problems that we so often report on. Were we accepting funding from those interests - directly or indirectly we would be constrained in our reporting. We force the hand of the corporate media. No longer can the corporate media function with an expectation that their version of events will have no rebuttal. We keep the pressure on the, for-sale-media-machine around the clock. They know we will be there, and our readers do to. We provide a vibrant forum for public debate. Our comments - get comments! People say it all the time, "read the comments." Indeed our commenters are among the most astute and substantive in online publishing. Our Godot section allows authors a powerful self-publishing tool to reach wide audiences with innovative perspectives. RSN is a veteran team of notion challengers. We have proven time and again: Courage in reporting does make a difference. Marc Ash - Founder, Reader Supported News

Keillor writes: "It is hard to believe that the Creator of our universe with its billions of galaxies could have sent Himself to this little blue blip not so long ago in the form of an infant born to a virgin, to be first worshiped by illiterate shepherds where He lay in a feed trough, livestock peering down at Him, Eastern potentates following a star to the site. But here we are again, singing those songs, so we shall see."

It's hard to fathom that average Republicans can't understand that they are being manipulated into working against their own best interests and how stupid it makes them look.
The sad part is that this is really what's going on in our country.

Today's news from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.):

Chairman Sanders is Confident on VA Reform: Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee chairman, expressed confidence that House and Senate conferees will reach agreement on a bill to solve a health care wait-time crisis for tens of thousands of veterans.

Negotiations Back on Track Negotiations between Senate Democrats and House Republicans seemingly broke down on Thursday but appeared to be on much better ground... as of the weekend, with staffers from both sides resuming discussions. Sanders and his house counterpart, House VA Chair Jeff Miller, agreed to fly back to Washington, D.C., if it would push the negotiations forward, Vox reported.

Israel Resumes Gaza Offensive: Soon after barrages of rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel on Sunday morning, the Israeli military announced that a humanitarian lull in its Gaza offensive, which was meant to last through midnight, was over, The New York Times reported.

Judge Overturns D.C. Ban on Guns in Public: A federal judge on Saturday overturned the Washington, D.C., ban on carrying handguns outside the home, saying it was unconstitutional. The court ordered the city to allow residents to carry handguns outside their homes and to let nonresidents carry them as well. In 2008, the Supreme Court struck down the District of Columbia’s all-out ban on handguns on the basis that it violated the right to bear arms guaranteed by the Constitution’s Second Amendment, Reuters reported.
