Progressive Breakfast: On the Road From Protest to Power: A Rising Tide

MORNING MESSAGE

Isaiah J. Poole
On the Road From Protest to Power: A Rising Tide
Is the anti-Trump resistance evolving into a movement that produces leaders with a mandate to govern with a progressive, grassroots-based agenda? We are seeing evidence that the answer will be a resounding "yes."

Trans Soldiers Sue Over Trump Ban on Service

Transgender service members sue over planned ban on Trans people in military. NPR:“Five openly transgender members of the U.S. military are suing President Trump and other leaders of the U.S. government over Trump’s declaration, over Twitter, that trans people will no longer be allowed to serve in the U.S. military. The suit alleges that Trump’s directive is “arbitrary and capricious,” unconstitutionally depriving the service members of due process.”>

Labor Dept. Seeks to Undermine Broker Rules

Trump seeks delay to requirement for brokers to defend clients. Bloomberg:“The Trump administration is moving to further delay part of an Obama-era rule to require brokers who offer retirement advice to put their customers’ interests ahead of their own. The U.S. Department of Labor said in a court filing Wednesday that it has submitted to the Office of Management and Budget a proposal to postpone parts of the so-called fiduciary rule for an additional 18 months… The Labor Department measure, the first major overhaul of retirement savings rules since the 1970s, was released last year over strong objections from the financial industry and Republican lawmakers. President Barack Obama’s administration said at the time that requiring brokers to put customers first would help eliminate biased advice that costs retirement savers billions of dollars annually in high fees and commissions.”

Dem Wins Iowa State House Special Election

Democrat wins Iowa state legislative special election in district Trump swept. New York Magazine:“First, this district (in southeast Iowa) is pretty evenly divided between registered Democrats and Republicans, making it an interesting test case. It’s one of those rural/small town Midwestern areas that swung heavily to Donald Trump last year (he carried the district by a 58/37 margin; Obama won it by a narrow 50/48 margin in 2012). So there’s no sign of any fundamental partisan realignment underway, at least down ballot. Second, the GOP candidate tried to use transgender bathroom access as a cudgel against his opponent.”

The Rise of a Trump-Like Chicken?

Trump-like chicken at White House ruffles feathers on Twitter. BBC:“The 30 ft (9m) tall bird, referred to as ‘Chicken Don’, stands between the official residence of the US president and the famous Washington Monument. Owner Taran Singh Brar said the prop portrays a president who is ‘afraid’… In a video posted on social media on Wednesday, activist and documentary maker Mr Brar said he hoped to ‘bring awareness’ to what he said was a ‘bad and destabilising’ US president. ‘We are out here to criticise our president for being weak and ineffective as a leader,’ he said in the footage posted on Twitter, adding that Mr Trump also “seems afraid” to release his tax returns.’He seems afraid to stand up to Putin and now he’s playing a game of chicken with North Korea,’ Mr Brar said.”

Trump’s ‘Fire and Fury’ Cribbed From Bannon’s Video Game?

Bannon’s video-game past may have inspired ‘fire and fury’ comments. New York Magazine:“Steve Bannon, before helping run Breitbart News and eventually joining the Trump campaign and administration, had a checkered career in Hollywood… he also helped a company raise millions of dollars for a gold-mining venture. Specifically, mining gold in the online game World of Warcraft… What Bannon found was a world ‘populated by millions of intense young men’ who may have been socially maladroit, but were ‘smart, focused, relatively wealthy, and highly motivated about issues that mattered to them… These guys,’ said Bannon, ‘these rootless, white males, had monster power.’ Bannon would go on to aggressively court this audience when brought on to help Andrew Breitbart build out his ultra-right-wing news-and-entertainment site.”

We're surging in California. Help push us over the top.

Bernie Sanders for President

Thanks in no small part to your efforts on the phones last weekend, voter registration numbers in California saw a big surge right before the May 23rd deadline.

We also learned this week that – according to a poll from the Public Policy Institute of California – we're now within striking distance of a victory in California on June 7th.

Our in-state staff and volunteers are working incredibly hard for the win, but they need your help. This is the most critical weekend for us to get on the phones and identify Bernie supporters, so that next week our ground teams know which doors to knock and which voters to persuade. Can you pitch in an hour or two of your time this weekend to help Bernie win California?

If you've never called voters for Bernie before, don't worry – it's not hard. You just need a computer or a tablet, and a phone. We provide a simple script for you to follow, and dedicated volunteers are standing by on livechat to assist if you run into any problems.

Thanks to your support, we've won 21 primaries and caucuses so far this year – a result that no one would have predicted when we launched this campaign just over a year ago. California represents the biggest prize of all, with 475 pledged delegates at stake, and a victory there would send a gigantic signal to the political establishment that our movement has real staying power.

With your help, we'll keep this political revolution going all the way to the convention in Philadelphia. So we hope you can help out this weekend and sign up to call for an hour or two.

In solidarity,
Team Bernie

RE: Calling for the win

Bernie Sanders for President

New York voters go to the polls on Tuesday. This is a very important moment for our campaign.

We've set a very audacious goal for this weekend: 15,000 volunteers making 2 million calls into New York. Can we count on your help for an hour or two this weekend?

If you've been on the fence, now is the time to get involved. We think this will be the largest phonebank event in history, and we need you to be a part of it.
If you've never made phone calls to voters before, don't worry. It's easy. All you need is a computer or a tablet, and a phone. There's a simple script for you to follow, and volunteers standing by on livechat to help if you get stuck.

A win on Tuesday will shock the establishment, prove we can win anywhere, and move us down the path to the nomination. So don't miss out on your chance to play a big role in American political history – either by calling New York voters now, or signing up to call later today or tomorrow.

In solidarity,
Team Bernie

$43,498,784.41

At midnight tonight we will have to turn in our numbers from our final fundraising deadline before the critical primaries in April. A lot of people in the corporate media and other establishment types are trying to call this race for Secretary Clinton. They want us to drop out. They want to be able to say, “oh Bernie’s fundraising is slowing down.” But we’re going to prove them wrong today.

Last month we raised an unbelievable $43.5 million from working people giving just a little bit each online. If we were to raise more money by the end of this month at midnight tonight, it would send an unmistakable message to the media and the establishment: we are going to win this campaign and the White House.

That’s why we’re setting a big goal today to reach more than $43.5 million by midnight's FEC deadline. Contribute now to help us get there:

Make another contribution and help us reach a huge goal of raising $43.5 million in March before tonight’scritical FEC fundraising deadline.

Contribute to our campaign today to help us match our February fundraising numbers

We started today having raised more than $39 million in March from more than 1.5 million individual contributions. I have no idea if we can reach our goal by midnight. But if we do, it will not only send an unmistakable message about the size and strength of our movement — it will also ensure we have the resources to win this Democratic primary.

That’s why your contribution before midnight is so important.

When we started this campaign we were at about 3 percent in the polls and Secretary Clinton was beating us by 60 points. We have come a long way.

Now we are coming to some very important primaries and caucuses over the next weeks in Wisconsin, Wyoming and New York. That’s why your contribution right now is so important. Please help us reach our goal:

Add another contribution so that we can meet our goal and astonish the media and political establishments and send an unmistakable message about the strength of our movement.

Thank you for standing with me.

In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders for President

Together, we've won six out of seven of the last contests – by some very large margins – and we're gaining momentum every day.

Make no mistake about it: your volunteer efforts – your phone calls and your time spent knocking on doors – are what’s moving the needle in these races and bringing us closer to the nomination.

But we can't stop now. April will be a critical month for our campaign, and in order to win, we're going to need everyone's help – starting right now. Can you get on the phones to help us identify Bernie supporters, or host a phonebank party?

YES, I WILL MAKE CALLS FROM HOME »

Sanders Raises Millions off New Hampshire Win

By Sam Frizell, TIME
11 February 16

hen Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders took the stage in New Hampshire on Tuesday night to deliver his victory speech, he asked for campaign contributions in his own way: a cheeky taunt paired with a brazen ask.
“I am going to New York City tonight. But I am not going to New York City to hold a fundraiser on Wall Street,” Sanders told the audience, poking broadly at his opponent Hillary Clinton’s high-dollar approach to raising cash. “Instead, I’m going to hold a fundraiser right here, right now, across America.” The Vermont Senator then directed his listeners to BernieSanders.com and asked for a contribution.
What followed was an online fundraising bonanza that brought in $5.2 million in 18 hours — which would have been nearly enough to pay wages for Sanders’ entire campaign staff in 2015. The sum beat his previous record after narrowly losing the Iowa caucuses of $3 million, his campaign said.
Sanders’ haul in the hours since he won in New Hampshire speaks to the success of his fundraising operation. He has relied almost exclusively on small-dollar contributions from donors who can give repeatedly without maxing out. His campaign has received 3.7 million contributions from some 1.3 million individual contributors. And his average contribution is $27, a number he repeats on the campaign trail so often that it was parodied on a recent episode of Saturday Night Live.
A large war chest will not necessarily lead to victory at the polls: Jeb Bush spent nearly $3,000 for each vote he won in Iowa, and he came away with a dismal performance in the state.
Clinton, too has raised heavily from small donors, especially compared with her previous race in 2008, bringing in cash from close to 700,000 individual contributions.
But she has relied heavily on high-dollar fundraisers. Of the $114 million Clinton raised last year, 58% of it came from donors giving the maximum $2,700 donation, according to the Campaign Finance Institute. Her total outpaced the $74.9 million Sanders raised last year, but there are limits to how much Clinton can raise to do closed-door fundraisers while she is busy campaigning. She brought in $15 million in January, compared with Sanders’ $20 million.
Sanders will need the extra money. His staff is growing his campaign organization and spending money on advertising in Nevada and South Carolina, as well as March states of Colorado, Minnesota and Oklahoma beginning this week, senior strategist Tad Devine said. Clinton has much of the infrastructure in place to begin efforts in those states.
Sanders’ fundraising success on Tuesday night did not stop him from asking for more. On Wednesday afternoon, his campaign sent out yet another fundraising email, saying that the $5.2 million he raised in the last hours would “send shivers down the spines of the nation’s financial elite and political establishment.”
Whether the Establishment is worried or not, Sanders’ haul after the New Hampshire polls closed is part of what explains why his campaign is built to last, no matter how many states he loses.

uring a recent three-day swing through Iowa, Bernie Sanders took the stage before 1800 supporters in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and declared that he believes he can win Iowa and New Hampshire, creating a path to victory.
“I am getting a really good feeling about Iowa. Last night we were in Sioux City and had about 1200 people out, tonight I think we have about 1500 people out here. [Official crowd estimate, 1800] … So keep it a secret, don’t tell anybody: I think we are going to win here, we are going to make history. And I think we have a great chance to win New Hampshire, and if you win Iowa and New Hampshire you have a path to victory.”

The media will not tell you this, but recent polling shows a path to victory for Bernie as well. If you watch the pundits you will hear them say Sanders will run into a wall after New Hampshire. They continue to say he is not connecting with non-white voters. They must not be looking at their own polls.
A new CNN survey shows that Bernie has demonstrated growing support among what the pollster refers to as non-white voters. In a survey last April, he had only 1 percent of voters in that category. As he has made a concerted effort to reach out to African-Americans and Latinos, Sanders’ support has grown to an impressive 32 percent in the most recent poll.

Non-white voters

9%

 32%
The poll also has Bernie gaining on Hillary Clinton among all voters nationally. Clinton has dropped 8 points to 50% and Sanders has risen 4 points to 34%. President Obama was down 28 points nationally 8 years ago. So Bernie has reason to feel good about Iowa. He should also be feeling good about his chances to win the nomination. Momentum is on his side even though the corporate media won’t admit it yet.
In the latest CBS poll of Iowa, Sanders was within 5 points of Clinton. Bernie has double digit leads in most polls of New Hampshire. He is right about what wins in both states would mean. It would shatter the belief among many that he can’t win. Obama didn’t start polling well nationally until he won Iowa.
Bernie also picked up 2 major endorsements last week, The Communication Workers of America and Democracy for America. CWA is one of the largest international unions and DFA is the group formed during Howard Dean’s presidential campaign and it now has 1 million members.
Sanders spent the last 3 days before Christmas in Iowa and capped off the swing at an event on immigration policy with Jesus “Chuy” Garcia in Chicago. At that event in Chicago, Sanders called on Rahm Emanuel to resign, saying that he is not seeking and does not want the embattled mayor’s endorsement.
Sanders continues to gain momentum despite a corporate media that refuses to cover him like a contender. There is no swarm of cameras at a Sanders rally. Seven cameras is a good turnout, and usually a few are from non-corporate media. Bernie told RSN that the corporate media is not enamored with his message but that he hopes they provide a free and fair discussion of the issues.

Bernie will return to Iowa on Tuesday closing out 2015 with a New Years Eve party in Des Moines. The Iowa Caucus will take place on February 1st,with New Hampshire going to the polls on February 9th.
There is only one more debate before the 6 early states, Sunday January 17th in South Carolina. That debate is sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus. It is unfortunate that there haven’t been more debates and that they have been so poorly scheduled. Bernie is clearly running against Hillary Clinton and the DNC who has already anointed Clinton. I don’t think the DNC will get their way this time. Bernie may crash the coronation and take the nomination.

hile Bernie Sanders was drawing huge crowds in Massachusetts, a Super Tuesday state, supporters from surrounding states, including Jim Hightower, were canvasing in Iowa in what was billed as a weekend of action. While they were knocking on doors and making phone calls to supporters in Iowa, Bernie was speaking to over 30,000 supporters in Springfield and Boston, Massachusetts.
Des Moines
Back in Iowa Jim Hightower, one of the country’s leading populists, was firing up the troops before they pounded the pavement for Bernie. Hightower told supporters that Bernie was “giving us all an opportunity to win.” Hightower, who campaigned for Sanders in Vermont when he first ran for Congress, told supporters that they were the key to victory.
Hightower said he wasn’t surprised that the country was ready for a campaign like Bernie’s, but was surprised by the fundraising, calling it astonishing. He said Bernie was already winning, citing the large crowds that indicate a growing movement.
In the Des Moines offices there was a mix of local volunteers and supporters who came in from Kansas City to spend the weekend knocking on doors. Throughout the state at all 15 offices the weekend’s outreach efforts were enhanced by volunteers from neighboring states.
Hightower closed by thanking the volunteers for all of their efforts.

After Hightower rallied the troops, he told RSN that Sanders’ focus on income inequality separates him from the rest of the candidates for president. He said Joe Biden was wrong when he implied that populists are not realists. Hightower called Biden’s realism nothing more than pessimism. Hightower said populists believe they can change the system and take on the powers that be, while Biden believes that he has to go along with Wall Street and the billionaire class.
Boston
1300 miles to the east, Bernie was building support in a Super Tuesday state. Thousands of people watched the Vermont senator from outside as a capacity crowd of over 20,000 rallied with him inside the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. It was the largest rally any presidential candidate has held in Boston. President Obama drew 10,000 to a rally during the 2008 campaign.
“Boston, thank you. What a huge crowd,” Sanders said when he took the stage. “We are running a people’s campaign and while the millionaires and billionaires have something we don’t have we have something they don’t have. Look around this room.”
“Since we began this campaign, hundreds of thousands of people at meetings like this have come together to help us make a political revolution,” he added. The crowd included supporters from next-door New Hampshire, which will hold the nation’s first primary February 9, and from Massachusetts, one of 13 states which will hold primaries on March 1.

Springfield
Earlier in the day, Sanders spoke to 6,000 people in Springfield, Massachusetts. In Springfield, Sanders said the campaign was about more than electing the next president: “It is a grassroots campaign designed not only to elect someone president of the United States but to build a political movement.”
“Given the crises facing our country today,” Sanders said, “it is too late for establishment economics or establishment politics. Now is the time to transform our society so that it works for the middle class and lower-income people, not just the top 1 percent.”

It was a great week for the longest-serving Independent member of Congress. Earlier in the week the campaign announced that they had raised over 26 million dollars in the third quarter, just 2 million short of the Clinton campaign. Sanders, who raised most of the money in small contributions on the internet, does not have a Super PAC. “The reason that we don’t have a Super PAC is pretty simple. I don’t represent the millionaires and billionaires and I don’t want their money,” he said in Springfield.
While Clinton continues to roll up endorsements from the party establishment and spend money on TV ads in Iowa and New Hampshire, Bernie’s grassroots campaign continues to fuel his rise in the polls. The momentum the Sanders campaign is generating may prove to be unstoppable. The voters seem to be rejecting the establishment endorsements and the traditional campaign that Clinton is running.
Jim Hightower is right, Bernie is giving us all an opportunity to win. Will we seize it?

Bernie Sanders’s $26 million cash haul is a major problem for Hillary Clinton

Worth reading in its entirety - take a look a fundraising graphs to see who's buying democracy!

This is how we change things!
And this is the difference. Hillary (and Biden if he joins the race) gets most of her campaign contributions from large donors. Yet, Bernie Sanders gets almost the same dizzying amount of contributions from SMALL donors - AKA regular people. And they believe in Bernie in a big way, his honesty and his ability to focus on making this country a better place for everybody, not just the rich or well connected. Some candidates say it, some steal the same message, but Bernie is the real thing.

This campaign is not about Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders for President

As you know, we launched our campaign almost five months ago and we’re doing very well so far. We’ve seen leads in Iowa and New Hampshire, and continue to gain ground in states across the country.

And while we will never raise as much money as our opponents who receive huge donations from wealthy individuals and super PACs, I have been amazed by the outpouring of grassroots financial support that we have secured. In just a few months, we have received almost 1 million individual contributions online.

Incredibly, these donations average less than $30 per contribution. In other words, while my opponents hold fundraising events in which a handful of millionaires make huge contributions, we are gaining extraordinary support with modest contributions coming from the working families and middle class of our country.

That's what my politics is all about. That's what I want to do throughout this campaign. And I want to thank all of you for your support.

Let me be very clear. As I have mentioned before and will mention again and again, this campaign is not about Bernie Sanders. It's about putting together a grassroots movement of Americans who stand up and say:

"Enough is enough. This country and our government belong to all of us, not just a handful of billionaires."

Sign on to endorse the campaign's progressive platform below — click here to add your name. Here's what this campaign is going to continue to talk about:

Income and wealth inequality: In the United States today we have the most unequal wealth and income distribution of any major country on earth — worse than at any time since the 1920s.

In terms of income, more than half of all new income is going to the top 1 percent. In other words, millions of Americans are working longer hours for lower wages, while virtually all new income growth goes to the people who need it the least.

This is a rigged economy. It is an economy which is not sustainable from a moral, economic or political perspective. Our economy must be changed in fundamental ways.

Jobs and income: The newspapers tell us that "official" unemployment is 5.1 percent. Real unemployment however, including those people who have given up looking for jobs and people who are working part-time when they want to work full-time, is 10.3 percent. And the youth unemployment rate is off the charts. For high school graduates between the ages of 17 and 20 years old, the real unemployment rate is 33.8 percent for white Americans, 36.1 percent for Hispanic Americans, and 51.3 percent for African Americans. This is nothing less than a national tragedy.

The fastest and most effective way to create a large number of good paying jobs is to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure — roads, bridges, rail, airports, water systems, waste water plants, etc. We can also create good paying jobs by hiring the teachers and pre-school educators we need to make sure our young people get a high-quality education.

We must end our disastrous trade policies, which are resulting in the outsourcing of jobs. That is why I am vigorously opposed to the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, and will do everything that I can to defeat it.

We need to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. Nobody who works 40 hours a week in our country should live in poverty. Over a period of a few years the national minimum wage should be $15 per hour.

We must end the disgrace of women earning 79 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as a man. We will fight for pay equity.

We need to end the scandal in which millions of Americans work 50 to 60 hours per week but receive no overtime pay. People who work overtime must get time and a half.

Campaign finance reform: As a result of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision, American democracy is being undermined by the ability of the Koch brothers and other billionaire families to buy elections. These wealthy contributors can literally buy politicians and elections by spending hundreds of millions of dollars in support of the candidates of their choice. I introduced a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and will fight hard to make certain that we win that struggle. In the short term, we need to pass a disclosure law to rein in the political power of big money. In the long term, we need to move toward public funding of elections so that all candidates can run for office without being beholden to the wealthy and powerful.

Climate change: Climate change is real, it is caused by human activity, and it is already devastating our nation and planet. The United States must lead the world in combating climate change and transforming our energy system away from fossil fuels and toward energy efficiency and sustainability. We have a moral responsibility to make certain that our kids and grandchildren can live on a habitable planet.

College affordability: In a highly competitive global economy, the United States needs the best educated workforce in the world. Thirty years ago we led the world in the percentage of our people who had college degrees. Today we are in 12th place, and we are moving in the wrong direction. I have talked to too many young people who can no longer afford to go to college or are leaving school deeply in debt. This is not acceptable.

Every person in this country who has the desire and ability should be able to get all the education they need regardless of the income of their family. This is not a radical idea. In Germany, Scandinavia and many other countries, higher education is either free or very inexpensive. We must do the same.

Dismantling structural racism: Throughout much of our history, the elite in America have divided people along racial lines in an effort to consolidate wealth and power. We need to simultaneously address the structural and institutional racism which exists in this country while at the same time vigorously attacking the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality which is making the very rich much richer, and everyone else — especially the African-American community — much poorer.

Meanwhile, too many people of color in this country find themselves subjected to a system that treats citizens who have not committed crimes like criminals. We have more people locked up in jail than any other country on earth. We need to invest in jobs and education, not jails and incarceration.

Finally, no person should have to worry that a routine interaction with law enforcement will end in violence or death. Black lives matter: we must reform our criminal justice system, move away from the militarization of police forces, and invest in community policing.

Health care: Shamefully, the United States remains the only major country on earth that does not guarantee health care to all people. Despite the modest gains of the Affordable Care Act, 35 million Americans continue to lack health insurance and many more are underinsured. Yet, we continue to pay far more per capita for health care than any other nation. The United States must move toward a Medicare-for-all single-payer system. Health care is a right, not a privilege.

Poverty: The United States has more people living in poverty today than at almost any time in the modern history of our country. We have the highest rate of childhood poverty of nearly any major country, while millions of Americans struggle to put food on the table. The Republican response to the crisis of poverty in America? Give more tax breaks to billionaires and make savage cuts to health care, education and nutrition programs. My response is somewhat different. I believe that in a democratic, civilized society none of our people should be hungry or live in desperation. We need to expand Social Security, not cut it. We need to increase funding for nutrition programs, not cut them.

Tax reform: We need real tax reform which makes the rich and profitable corporations begin to pay their fair share of taxes. It is absurd that in 1952, corporate income taxes provided 32 percent of federal revenue, but in 2014 they provided only 11 percent. It is scandalous that major profitable corporations like General Electric, Verizon, Citigroup and Bank of America have, in a given recent year, paid nothing in federal income taxes. It is fiscally irresponsible that the U.S. Treasury loses about $100 billion a year because corporations and the rich stash their profits in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and other tax havens.

Warren Buffett is honest. He has pointed out the unfairness that he, a multi-billionaire, pays a lower effective tax rate than his secretary. It is not acceptable that billionaire hedge fund managers are able to pay lower effective tax rates than truck drivers or nurses because they take advantage of a variety of tax loopholes that their lobbyists wrote.

This must end. We need a tax system which is fair, and which is progressive.

Children should not go hungry in this country while profitable corporations and the wealthy avoid their tax responsibilities.

These are just some of the issues that we will be dealing with. Add your name to stand with me and endorse this platform for our campaign.

The struggle to create a nation and world of economic and social justice and environmental sanity is not an easy one. The struggle to try and create a more peaceful world will be extremely difficult. But this I know: despair is not an option if we care about our kids and grandchildren. Giving up is not an option if we want to prevent irreparable harm to our planet.

We must stand up and fight back. We must launch a political revolution which engages millions of Americans from all walks of life in the struggle for real change.

This country belongs to all of us, not just the billionaire class. And that's what our campaign is all about.

This campaign cannot be won by me alone. That is absolutely for sure. To win, all of us must be deeply involved.

In the coming days, weeks and months we need to hear your ideas as to what issues are most important to you and your community. We need to hear your thoughts about how we can mount the effective campaign we need to win. We need your help in spreading the word so that your friends, neighbors, and co-workers become involved in the effort.

In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders
