Sleep better knowing Monsanto's in charge?

Monsanto, a company known for its widespread use of Genetically Modified Organisms, including Roundup Ready crops, is hoping that that data will help them determine how extreme weather events will affect their farmers’ crops.

Eager to provide better climate and weather data to its farmers, agriculture giant Monsanto has bought The Climate Corporation for $930 million.
The Climate Corporation is a financial services company that collects weather and climate data from 2.5 million separate locations, and then combines that data with 150 billion soil observations and multiple forecasts from major climate change models to determine risk analysis for farmers for a given period of time. Using that analysis, the company provides farmers with insurance that protects them in the case of extreme weather. It also provides the data to farmers to help them figure out, in any given year, the best seeds to plant as well as the time of year to plant and harvest.
Monsanto, a company known for its widespread use of Genetically Modified Organisms, including Roundup Ready crops, is hoping that that data — all 50 terabytes of it — will help them determine how extreme weather events will affect their farmers’ crops.
“A farmer will buy seed that is optimally suited to his land … and our service will help him make a decision about when to plant, how much nitrogen to put down, when to harvest, what the expected yield is each day,” Climate Corporation CEO David Friedberg told Tech Crunch. “So our product really complements what Monsanto’s product set is today.”

Monsanto’s decision to invest in climate data isn’t surprising. Climate change poses a huge risk to farming around the world, as extreme weather and shifting weather patterns create unpredictable positions for farmers. Britain’s National Farmers’ Union claims climate change is the largest risk to farming the country faces, and agriculture in Australia is also likely to suffer as the climate warms. In the U.S., drought has wreaked havoc on crops in the last decade, while record-breaking rains this year drenched crops in the Southeast.

Kerry Preete, VP of Global Strategy for Monsanto, told Tech Crunch that the number one challenge the farmers he’s talked to throughout his career cite is how to deal with the variability of climate.
“As we’ve seen over the last several years, we think weather patterns are becoming more erratic,” he said. “It places a huge challenge on farmers with their production. We think a lot of the risk can be mitigated out of weather impacts through information.”

Climate Corporation’s work to advise and insure farmers against extreme weather risks also isn’t surprising — though pundits and politicians continue to grapple over the validity of climate science, insurance companies have for years treated climate change as fact.

Let's End Monsanto's Corporate Welfare!

Please add your name to Senator Bernie Sanders petition below and add your voice to speak out against Monsanto.

We are beginning to understand the dangers posed by Monsanto GMOs and Monsanto deserves no special protection.

Demand answers from the next Fed chair nominee.

In the midst of everything else that is going on in Washington I wanted to call your attention to an issue that I, and millions of Americans, feel very strongly about. And that is the power of Monsanto, one of the most devious corporations in this country, to push through corporate welfare legislation, the Monsanto Protection Act. This provision allows bio-technology companies to sell genetically modified seeds even if a court blocks them -- and even when the courts find that these crops pose potential harm to health and the environment.

Monsanto was able to get that special interest provision included in a must-pass piece of legislation that passed Congress last March. It is set to expire at the end of the fiscal year, September 30, 2013. And that’s what must happen.

The Monsanto Protection Act must not be renewed! Please sign our petition which urges Congress, once and for all, to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act.

On a related issue, I will continue the fight to label genetically engineered food. In 49 countries around the world, including all of Europe, people have the opportunity of knowing whether or not they are eating food which contains genetically engineered ingredients. We should have that same right in the United States.

Once again, I hope you will join me in signing our petition that makes it absolutely clear that the Monsanto Protection Act must not be renewed.

Sincerely,

Bernie

Defeating Monsanto!

This highlights WHO IS LISTENING to the people!
Let's make sure we work to re-elect those folks and support them in the future.

It also highlights WHO IS IGNORING THE PEOPLE and working to Big Corporations and generous campaign contributions.

Let's work to defeat them next election.

In a major victory brought upon by serious activism and public outrage, new legislation changes will shut down the Monsanto Protection Act rider that granted Monsanto protection from legal action and was set to renew on September 30th.

This unprecedented move shows the true power of the anti-GMO, anti-Monsanto movement, and how elected officials are now being forced to side with the concerned population over the money-spewing Monsanto. After all, it was Monsanto who purchased its way into the initial Senate spending bill legislation via a rider dubbed the ‘Monsanto Protection Act’ through Senator Roy Blunt.
Officially labeled the Farmer Assurance Provision under Sec. 735 of the Senate Continuing Resolution spending bill, Senator Blunt was conveniently given over $64,000 by Monsanto before he handed the biotech corporation the ability to write its own legislation for the Monsanto Protection Act. And as I told you back in March here on the frontlines of anti-GMO activism, the financial payload dished out by Monsanto was enough to secure a major victory for corporations over both the public and even the federal government.
It was last March that Obama signed the initial Senate spending bill into law, subsequently bringing the Monsanto Protection Act rider into legal validity as well. But the rider only extended until September 30th of this year, and it was up to Monsanto to pull another slippery legislative trick out of their sleeves in order to pass a Monsanto Protection Act 2.0 renewal. Once again, however, Monsanto executives underestimated the power of the alternative news community and the intelligence of those who do not want to eat contaminated food.
And as a result, Senators are being forced to respond in a big way. As one Senator put it:
“That provision will be gone,” said Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) told Politico.
There is even discussion of how the Monsanto Protection Act came to exist in the first place, and more importantly how we can hold the politicians responsible.
“Short-term appropriations bills are not an excuse for Congress to grandfather in bad policy,” said Colin O’Neil, director of government affairs for the Center for Food Safety.
Once again, we have achieved a major victory in the fight against Monsanto and GMOs at large. As information on the subject continues to spread like intellectual wildfire, Monsanto’s days as a food supply hog consistently dwindle.

The Amish Don't Get Autism

Thought-provoking!
The Amish don’t get Autism. They also don’t use GMOs or vaccinations. Possible link?

“Heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are virtually non-existent in Amish villages. Equally non-existent are modern, chemically-engineered medicines, enhanced (chemically-engineered) foods, G.M.O. foods, and of course, vaccines. How is it that those who are without the “miracles” of modern orthodox medicine are healthier?”

Written anonymously and passed in secret, the Monsanto Protection Act allows agri-business to ignore court orders blocking the sale of genetically-engineered seeds. That's unacceptable. There are heroes in the Senate who are doing what's right to protect our future, speaking TRUTH TO POWER, and restoring our Democracy.

Senator Jeff Merkley is one of those heroes ---

163,897.
That’s how many Americans have signed my petition to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act. It’s a grassroots movement that’s making the big special interests nervous.
Let’s turn up the volume even louder and tell the Senate backroom deals and secret provisions for big special interests are unacceptable.
Get more people involved. Share this photo right now:
