This isn’t some damn game, it’s a revolution
Republicans trying to substitute minority rule for majority rule
Article | Op Ed | | By Mike Bradley
John Boehner says,
All the comments, all the propaganda from the GOP that the current shutdown of the U.S. government is somehow a principled approach to doing what is right for Americans by fighting the Affordable Care Act, pointedly called Obamacare, is, once and for all, an illustration of the purist form of hogwash this nation has ever seen in its long and rich political history.
It would be laughable in its arrogant absurdity if not for the fact it masks an attempted takeover of the American political system! The currently corrupt and increasingly southern radicalized national GOP, with their bomb throwing extremists in the so-called Tea Party, are hollering about Obamacare while trying to upend the one standard that has kept America a viable and strong democracy since its creation.
The main issue here has little to do with the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) but it has much to do with a slippery and underhanded attempt to undermine the American democracy – not to defeat the Democratic Party, but to defeat democracy.
Republicans are trying to substitute minority rule for majority rule!
This nation and all of its history has been predicated upon the nationally accepted idea of majority rule; if something is voted – by the cub scouts or the Rotary Club, or any local, state or national governing body – the majority after a vote is counted is accepted as the winner of the debate. That is how it has always been, but now the increasingly radical national GOP, (not just the Tea Party extremists that so often provide cover for the national GOP), wants to overturn that concept and allow a minority to determine policy even after being defeated in fair and open debate.
The Affordable Care Act was voted by both Houses of Congress, signed by the president and upheld after a GOP challenge brought to the U.S. Supreme Court. But even though the current Supreme Court has a working majority of hard-ball conservatives, the Supreme Court upheld the vast majority of the Affordable Care Act.
But now, failing all else, the GOP is using the Affordable Care Act as a tool by which it is seeking to upend the American democracy itself by holding a fiscal gun to the head of the president and the American people regarding financing government operations. In reality it is truly a classic holdup: Give us what we want and no one gets hurt!
Except in this case if the GOP gets what it wants it will have overturned the concept of majority rule and replaced it with activist minority rule, which of course is the death knell of democracy as we have known it and understood it, and as it has historically always been shown to be the case.
Speaker Boehner is right: “This isn’t some damn game!” No, it’s not. It’s an attempted revolution.
