The incoming Republican majorities in Congress represent a real threat to the future of Social Security. For the last four years, Republicans in Washington have underfunded the Social Security Administration to the tune of $2.7 billion resulting in the closures of 80 Social Security field offices and 500 contact stations across the country. They are attempting to undermine our Social Security system through a depletion of services. And when Republicans take control of Congress in January, they will push for a further reduction of services and deep cuts to earned benefits. This past week, Social Security Works held a forum in Washington, DC to mobilize against this looming threat. At the meeting, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said, “We need to organize and we need to mobilize and we have to stop agonizing.” And we have to move NOW. Release of new national polling on people’s preferences for interacting with the Social Security Administration

(Washington, DC) Social Security Works and The American Federation of Government Employees will be joined by U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Carolyn Colvin, Commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA), and leaders and experts from both the Hill and outside organizations, for a forum to discuss how the Social Security Administration can continue to provide exceptional service in light of the public’s overwhelming support of our Social Security system.
Social Security Works will release new national polling detailing the American public’s preferences for how the Social Security Administration should interact with the public while delivering their earned benefits.
The Social Security Administration has faced continued budget pressure resulting in office closing and service reductions. This comes at a time when more and more Americans need their earned Social Security benefits.
There will be an opening program featuring Senator Mikulski at 10am followed by Commissioner Colvin; after which there will be two panels featuring experts from the Hill and outside organizations. The forum will close with statements from organizational leaders and other members of Congress.

The only way Republicans will get the message is if we rally the American people and not only demand no cuts, but demand an expansion of benefits and services. Remember: Social Security is the most popular government run program in the history of the United States. It has a $2.7 trillion surplus and has never contributed one penny to the deficit because it is independently funded by the FICA payroll tax.
