L’ITALIEN CASHES IN — AG goes after E-CIGS — Wish list for GROSS

GOOD MORNING, MASSACHUSETTS. It's Wednesday.
PROGRAMMING NOTE — Lauren Dezenski will return on July 31.

L'ITALIEN CASHES IN — Congressional candidate and state Sen. Barbara L'Italien saw a bump in fundraising and Twitter followers after she "hijacked" a Fox News morning show to blast President Donald Trump's immigration policies.

In the immediate aftermath of the stunt, the L'Italien campaign raked in $12,000 in small-dollar donations from around the country and more than doubled its Twitter following, spokesman Joe Katz told me on Tuesday night.

The network thought it had booked a pro-ICE Democrat for a hit on Fox and Friends First on Monday morning. Instead, Fox got a progressive from Massachusetts who said the Trump administration should "stop abducting children."

Once Fox realized its guest was not Arizona Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick, the network cut L'Italien's shot. But that didn't stop the clip grabbing national headlines — and some cash.

"I don't know if we've hit all 50 states yet but its been nationwide," Katz said. "A lot of $27 donations, a lot of $10 donations." Katz said the campaign hasn't paid attention to criticism that it overdid the fundraising emails after the Fox hit.

L'Italien's Twitter following grew by 5,000 after her hit on Fox — bringing her to 8,800 followers. She's now neck-in-neck with primary opponent Dan Koh, who has 8,977 followers. Outpacing them both is another MA-3 candidate, Rufus Gifford, with over 52,000 followers.

How did the campaign pull it off? Turns out Katz used to work for the Kirkpatrick campaign in 2010. Fox contacted him late Sunday night to book his old boss, he said, and he confirmed. He just didn't mention the guest would be L'Italien.

And as for Fox's allegation that Katz used a Kirkpatrick logo in his correspondence with the network, Katz wouldn't answer directly.

"All I'll say is that I've shown the same commitment to accuracy and fairness with Fox News that they have always shown America," Katz said. "There is sort of a unique opportunity there to speak directly to the president of the United States in a way that you know that he's listening, and we had the opening and Barbara felt she had a responsibility to take advantage of that and make sure he was hearing the voices of the folks he represents."

** A message from NARAL Pro-Choice MA and the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund: As recently as 2007, a woman in Massachusetts was indicted for managing her own medication abortion. How could this happen? The answer lies in an outdated statute still in the Massachusetts General Laws - the pre-Roe v. Wade abortion ban. Fortunately, our state just took a critical step to protect abortion access by getting outdated statutes criminalizing abortion off the books - but there's so much more work to be done.

Help keep abortion legal and accessible in Massachusetts, no matter what happens at the federal level. Join us now. **
