Britain's ambassador to the United States sent diplomatic cables back to London that lambasted President Donald Trump as "inept," "insecure," and "incompetent," the Daily Mail reported Saturday.
Sir Kim Darroch's dispatches to officials in the United Kingdom ranged from 2017 to the present, and reportedly described the White House as "uniquely dysfunctional," describing "knife fights" within the Trump administration and constant scandals that could "crash and burn" the presidency.
Darroch also reportedly said President Donald Trump was indebted to "dodgy Russians" and feared that he would attack Iran.
"We don't really believe this Administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept," Darroch wrote, according to the Daily Mail.
Britain's Foreign Commonwealth Office told CNN in a statementthat ambassadors are expected "to provide Ministers with an honest, unvarnished assessment of the politics in their country."
The statement continued: "Their views are not necessarily the views of Ministers or indeed the government. But we pay them to be candid. Just as the US Ambassador here will send back his reading of Westminster politics and personalities."
The leaked cables are expected to cause some diplomatic tension between the two countries.
