I’m meeting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Springfield, Illinois tomorrow morning to end the U.S.-Saudi war in Yemen. Nancy Pelosi doesn’t know we’re meeting yet. But she will soon. In my experience, it’s always best to call ahead. Nancy Pelosi’s DC number is (202) 225-4965. Call them now and ask Nancy Pelosi to tell Robert tomorrow in Springfield that she will end the Yemen War this month on the “veto proof” NDAA bill that “funds the troops.” I’m sure they’ll pass the message along that Nancy Pelosi can expect to see me in Springfield tomorrow morning.
Nancy Pelosi has the power to end the Yemen War by herself by insisting that the Senate adopt three House-passed amendments to end the war [Smith-Khanna, Lieu-Gabbard, and Malinowski] in the House-Senate negotiations this month on the “must-pass,” “veto-proof” National Defense Authorization Act [NDAA] that “funds the troops.” So all we have to do to end the Yemen War is move Nancy Pelosi.
And I’ve moved politicians in Illinois to end the Yemen War before. I moved Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin in Bloomington-Normal. I figure, if I can move Dick Durbin, I can move Nancy Pelosi. I had some help moving Durbin in Bloomington-Normal. It didn’t hurt that a friend on the faculty at Illinois Wesleyan gave me her ticket to the event. It didn’t hurt that hundreds of people in the audience at Illinois Wesleyan vigorously applauded when I asked Durbin my question about Yemen. We all get by with a little help from our friends, and I have always relied on the kindness of strangers.
I’m expecting similar effects tomorrow. I’m not going alone. They said I could bring my “spouse.” The bride wasn’t available, so I’m taking my Best Man, my “second,” as Bobby Fischer would say. I’ll also be taking this petition signed by ten thousand Americans pressing Nancy Pelosi to end the Yemen War [sign here!] And we’ll be surrounded by Illinois Democrats who want Nancy Pelosi to end the Yemen War.
Here’s decisive proof that Illinois Democrats want Nancy Pelosi to end the Yemen War. One time I went to see Dick Durbin at the City Club of Chicago [yes, I’ve been following Durbin around Illinois to talk to him about Yemen like some people follow the Grateful Dead.] After I asked my question in front of the room and spoke with Durbin one-on-one, I looked around the room and thought, who else could I talk to here about ending the Yemen War? There were no other Members of Congress there. So I asked a Chicago peace activist standing nearby, who else should I try to talk to here about ending the Yemen War? Go talk to Bill Daley, the Chicago peace activist said, pointing. He’s running for Mayor. The family business.
What the hell, I thought. You never know how that might turn out to be useful. So I went to talk to Bill Daley. I was stunned by what he said. He lowered his voice. “We should get the hell outta there,” Bill Daley said. “We never shoulda gone in there with the Saudis in the first place.”
Here’s the thing about Bill Daley. He was Obama-Biden Chief of Staff when Obama-Biden started the Saudi War in Yemen in March 2015. Even Bill Daley says we should get the hell out. Even Bill Daley says we never should have gone in there with the Saudis in the first place. And Bill Daley is no red diaper baby. His old man and my Grandpa Max skirmished in the Thirties. Studs Terkel wrote about it in his book. I’ve known red diaper babies. My father was a red diaper baby. Bill Daley is no red diaper baby.
That’s how I know that Illinois Democrats want Nancy Pelosi to end the Saudi War in Yemen. Even Bill Daley says we should get the hell out. Even Bill Daley says we never shoulda gone in there with the Saudis in the first place.
Call Nancy Pelosi now at (202) 225-4965. When you reach a staffer or leave a message, you can say: “I urge Nancy Pelosi to tell Robert in Springfield tomorrow that she will end the Yemen War on the ‘veto-proof’ NDAA.” When you’ve made your call please report it in the comments below this post at Daily Kos to inspire others to call. And of course, share anything you find out.
And: sign the MoveOn petition that I’m going to deliver to Nancy Pelosi in Springfield tomorrow pressing her to end the Yemen War.
And: let me know in the comments below this post at Daily Kos if you’re going to be at the event in Springfield tomorrow and you’re willing to help move Nancy Pelosi to end the Yemen War.
I will report back what happens when I meet Nancy Pelosi in Springfield tomorrow.
