If that were moving a bit more quickly towards completion we would be quite a bit calmer. It would also allow us to focus on what we actually do, which is not fundraising.

most endangered species of whales on earth. (photo: Thinkstock)

onservationists took legal action this week to get protection for one of the most endangered species of whales on Earth.
The whales in question are a a genetically distinct population of Bryde’s whales who were only recently discovered. Bryde’s whales can be found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, but these whales are year-round residents of the Gulf of Mexico who live mainly in the DeSoto Canyon, off the Florida panhandle.
Genetic testing conducted by the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Southeast Fisheries Science Center recently concluded these whales are a genetically distinct subspecies, if not an entirely new species altogether. In addition to being genetically unique, they also have a distinctive song unlike the calls of other Bryde’s whales and are the only baleen whales living in the Gulf.
Unfortunately, at the time of their discovery the best estimate of their population put their number at fewer than 50 individuals, which raised concerns that they are one of the most endangered whales on earth who will likely disappear entirely without intervention.
In 2014, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) took action on their behalf and petitioned the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to have them listed under the Endangered Species Act, arguing they face a slew of threats putting them at serious risk of extinction.
“This is a unique group of whales, different from all others of its kind and it’s threatened six ways to Sunday,” Michael Jasny, director of NRDC’s Marine Mammal Protection Project and lead author of the petition, said at the time. “An Endangered Species listing would bring a recovery plan and the resources needed to save these animals … they just can’t make it in the Gulf if we don’t help them out.”
Not only are they isolated with little genetic diversity, but they face a host of problems from human activity that range from noise and organic pollution and being hit by ships to disturbances from energy exploration and living with the toxic aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon spill.
Last year, samples taken from a Bryde’s whale in the area found a buildup of two metals, chromium and nickel, which raised yet more concerns for them because their calves are particularly vulnerable to toxic buildup that is passed on by their mothers when they’re pregnant and nursing.
Things were looking up last year after the National Marine Fisheries Service finally agreed that they need endangered species protection, which would lead to the development of a recovery plan and designation of critical habitat, but the agency has yet to take action on their behalf and it’s gone well beyond the timeframe legally allowed.
This week, the NRDC took legal action to speed things up, which will hopefully compel federal officials to enact protection for these whales before it’s too late to save them.

Security will be tightened at airports, rail stations and ports in the U.S. in response to the deadly attacks in Belgium, according to a government official briefed on the plan. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is expected to make an announcement later Tuesday, said the official, who wasn't authorized to disclose the plans and asked not to be identified. The stepped-up security includes assigning additional law enforcement personnel to the facilities, the official said.

Brussels on Highest Alert Level After 31 Killed in Bombings --More than 180 injured in three explosions in Belgian capital --Brussels at standstill as authorities search for more bombs | 22 March 2016 | Belgium was on the highest terror-alert level after three bombings in Brussels on Tuesday killed at least 31, injured more than 180 and raised fears of follow-up attacks. Police make raids as suspect sought in Brussels attacks | 22 March 2016 | Multiple explosions rocked Brussels Tuesday at the airport and in the city's subway system - prompting a lockdown of the Belgian capital and heightened security across Europe...The blasts have killed at least 34 people and put the Belgian city on its highest terror alert level. 'Do you all remember how beautiful and safe a place Brussels was. Not anymore, it is from a different world! U.S. must be vigilant and smart!' wrote the Republican front-runner on Twitter. Trump then said in an interview on Fox News the US needs to 'shut the borders,' a statement he repeated later in the morning while appearing on Today. In that appearance he also told Matt Lauer he is a firm believer in using torture to get information from people behind attacks like the one in Brussels, stating; 'Waterboarding is fine.'

Stocks slide, safe-haven assets rise after Brussels attacks | 22 March 2016 | World stocks fell and safe-haven gold and government bonds rose on Tuesday after attacks on the airport and a rush-hour metro train in Brussels that triggered security alerts across western Europe. Travel sector stocks including airlines and hotels fell the most, pulling the broader indices down from multi-week highs, although stocks had clawed back some of their losses by midday and bonds and gold eased back from their earlier highs. U.S. futures pointed to a fall of almost half of one percent at the open on Wall Street.

Paris terror suspect was planning new attacks, Belgian official says | 20 March 2016 | Belgium’s foreign minister, Didier Reynders, said Sunday that terror suspect Salah Abdeslam, who was wanted in the terror attacks that shook Paris in November, was planning more attacks while he was hiding in Brussels. Until police found him Friday in the Molenbeek neighborhood in Brussels, he had been organizing a new "network of people" to launch assaults in European countries, Reynders said. Europe's most-wanted man, Abdeslam, 26, is the last known living operative connected to the Nov. 13 attacks on Paris, where 130 people were killed and many more were injured across the French capital. He eluded authorities for four months.

Lifting off from Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington, Obama headed for Havana where the sight of Air Force One, America's iconic presidential jet, touching down on Cuban soil would have been unimaginable not long ago. The three-day trip, the first by a U.S. president in 88 years, is the culmination of a diplomatic opening announced by Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro in December 2014, ending a Cold War-era estrangement that began when the Cuban revolution ousted a pro-American government in 1959.
