"GYM" JORDAN Mobile billboard brings Ohio State sex abuse scandal to Washington as impeachment hearing is underway

About this website
NBCNEWS.COM
The Ohio State Accountability Project has been advocating on behalf of victims of the university's former staff physician Dr. Richard Strauss.

By Corky Siemaszko
Right around the time Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, was shedding his suit jacket and preparing to grill witnesses Tuesday at the impeachment hearing, a mobile billboard truck began circling the U.S. Capitol and calling for a congressional investigation into a sex abuse scandal that has been dogging him back home.
The video playing on the billboard took Ohio State University to task for failing to stop staff physician Dr. Richard Strauss from molesting hundreds of male athletes and other students at a time when Jordan was an assistant wrestling coach at the school.
“Ohio State officials knew about Richard Strauss for nearly two decades,” the message flashed on the screen. “20 years later, sexual abuse still is unreported. This isn’t just a Strauss problem, this is a problem at The Ohio State University. Congress, it’s time to investigate.”
The truck was put on the road by the Ohio State Accountability Project, which has been advocating on behalf of former OSU students who say their alma mater failed to protect them from a sexual predator.
“Ohio State University has failed to take meaningful action in dealing with a 20-year scandal where hundreds of teenage students were sexually abused while the university turned a blind eye, “ OSAP spokesman Ian Prior said in a statement.
“Meanwhile, sexual assaults are still going unreported and rapes on the OSU campus are on the rise. If Ohio State can’t figure out how to create a safe environment for students on campus, then Congress should step in.”
NBC News reached out to Ohio State for comment about OSAP taking its campaign to Washington at a time when the national media is focused on the ongoing impeachment inquiry that has endangered President Donald Trump.
In response, Ohio State spokesman Ben Johnson repeated what he said previously, namely that the university “has led the effort to investigate and expose the misdeeds of Richard Strauss and the systemic failures to respond, and the university is committed to a fair resolution.”
Ohio State, he added, is “covering the cost of professionally certified counseling services and treatment for anyone affected, as well as reimbursing costs for counseling already received."

The group deployed the truck last month when the Ohio State Buckeyes took on the Northwestern University Wildcats football team in Evanston, Illinois, and the truck has become a familiar sight in Columbus, Ohio as well.
OSAP has not specifically targeted Jordan, who is a Republican and one of Trump's staunchest defenders.
But OSAP launched the awareness campaign after independent investigators released a damning report in May which concluded that coaches and athletic administrators at Ohio State knew for two decades that Strauss molested at least 177 male athletes and students but did not sound the alarm or try to stop him.
Strauss, who died in 2005, worked at OSU from 1978 through 1998. Jordan coached at the school from 1986 to 1994.
Jordan became ensnared in the Strauss scandal in July 2018 when three former wrestlers told NBC News that the future congressman was aware that the doctor was preying on them but failed to protect them.
An arch-conservative and leading member of the House Freedom Caucus, Jordan has repeatedly denied any knowledge of what Strauss was doing. He has called the allegations against him politically motivated.
Jordan recently repeated that denial after NBC News reported that a former referee said in a lawsuit against Ohio State that Strauss masturbated in front of him in a shower after a wrestling match and that he reported the encounter directly to Jordan and then-head coach Russ Hellickson. Jordan is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit.
NBC News has not heard back from a request for comment about the OSAP campaign from a spokesperson for Jordan.
OSAP is a tax-exempt organization that was registered with the Ohio secretary of state by a Cincinnati-area lawyer named David R. Langdon, the Columbus Dispatch and other Ohio news outlets have reported.
Langdon has been linked to a number of conservative causes, as well as attack ads targeting Democratic presidential candidates like Sen. Elizabeth Warren and others. He could not be immediately reached for comment to explain why he was involved with a group whose campaign is drawing attention to a scandal that has caused Jordan political damage.
Prior, who is a Republican activist, declined to comment when asked by NBC News about Langdon's involvement with OSAP.

The Daily 202: As alcoholism fells another congressman, a reminder that no one is immune to addiction

-- A Breitbart employee courted Bernie Sanders activist Bruce Carter to get Carter to convince black voters to support Trump or refrain from voting in 2016. Bloomberg News's Lauren Etter and Michael Riley report: “Carter’s recollections and correspondence, which he shared after a falling-out with his fellow Trump supporters, provide a rare look inside the no-holds-barred nature of the Republican’s campaign and how it explored new ways to achieve an age-old political aim: getting the right voters to the polls — and keeping the wrong ones away. … The work Carter says he did, and the funds he was given to do it, also raise questions as to whether campaign finance laws were broken. The group Carter founded, Trump for Urban Communities, never disclosed its spending to the Federal Election Commission — a possible violation of election law.”

INSTEAD OF ACCOMPLISHING SOMETHING...ANYTHING...KEVIN MCCARTHY GENUFLECTS TO TRUMP....NOT WHAT'S BEST FOR THE NATION.

NATIONAL INTERESTS NEVER COME FIRST WITH REPUBLICANS.

The Daily 202: Immigration is tearing Republicans apart

McCarthy warned members that passing a moderate immigration bill would make it much easier for Democrats to win control of the House – by depressing conservative base turnout and derailing the rest of the GOP agenda.

The president also touted how aggressively he’s stepping up deportations. “We have people coming into the country — or trying to come in, we’re stopping a lot of them — but we’re taking people out of the country, you wouldn’t believe how bad these people are,” Trump said. “These aren’t people. These are animals.”

“Still, the 20 House Republicans who have signed the petition have made clear they are done waiting after years of hoping their party’s leaders would bring some immigration bill — any immigration bill — to the floor.”

This worked in the short-term, but more than anything else it guaranteed the GOP would become a minority party in the Golden State. Republicans have never recovered, yet the national party is in the process of following the same path.

The Daily 202: Rod Rosenstein may just be the most powerful person in Washington

FAKE NEWS EXPLODES!

-- Politico, “Baby Breitbarts to pop up across the country?” by Jason Schwartz: “In March, Congresswoman Diane Black … put out a campaign ad that seemed at first glance to be utterly textbook: a scene of [Trump] embracing her, [paired with headline from] the Tennessee Star. Close watchers may have had just one question: What is the Tennessee Star? Visitors to its website would have had a hard time figuring that out, [since] there was no information indicating that the Star is, in fact, a right-wing site, described by many as a ‘Tennessee Breitbart.’ … Launched in February 2017, the Star is part of a growing trend of opaque, locally focused, ideological outlets, dressed up as traditional newspapers. From the Arizona Monitor to the Maine Examiner, sites with names and layouts designed to echo those of nonpartisan publications — and with varying levels of credibility — have emerged across the country, aimed at influencing local politics by stepping into the coverage void left by the collapsing finances of local newspapers.”

Progressive Breakfast: Betsy DeVos's 'School Choice' Is Really Crony Capitalism

MORNING MESSAGE

Jeff Bryant
Betsy DeVos’s ‘School Choice’ Is Really Crony Capitalism
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos says she supports “great public schools,” but her actions continue to show her hypocrisy on that subject. Her recent trip to Michigan, her home state, offers yet more proof of the real focus of her leadership – and it isn’t about supporting public schools.

Hardline GOP Caucus to Revive Obamacare Repeal in House

House Freedom Caucus will try to revive Obamacare repeal. Politico:“The conservative House Freedom Caucus will file a petition today to try to force Speaker Paul Ryan to bring up a so-called ‘clean Obamacare repeal’ bill. The legislation passed the House and Senate in the past — it repeals Obamacare after a two-year transition period. (It failed the Senate this year.)… The Freedom Caucus and conservative outside groups will try to ramp up lots of pressure to force people to sign on. Expect Trump – itchy for victory, and frustrated with Republican leaders on health care – to weigh in.”

HUD Report Details Crisis For Renters

Millions of poor families could benefit from housing aid Trump wants to cut. WaPo:“The number of poor families struggling to pay their monthly rents or living in deplorable accommodations has grown 41 percent since the beginning of the Great Recession a decade ago, despite a stronger national economy, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development… ‘These are folks on the edge who don’t get housing help,’ said Brian Sullivan, a HUD spokesman. ‘They are severely rent-burdened or just living in awful conditions.’ The report blamed growing competition for a shrinking supply of affordable residences for the increase, a result of declining homeownership and rising rents, in addition to a widening gap between the number of renters in need and the availability of federal assistance.

Nation’s Largest For-Profit Landlords Consolidate

Blackstone-Starwood merger creates largest rental home company In U.S. NPR:“Many renters around the country are about to get a new landlord. Two publicly traded companies in the rental home business are planning to merge. Together, the Blackstone Group and Starwood Waypoint Homes own more than 80,000 homes. They were part of a wave of investors who saw business take off when they bought up foreclosed homes and turned them into rental properties.”

Cybersecurity Chiefs Quit

Four top cybersecurity officials quit government. BuzzFeed:“Four senior cybersecurity officials are stepping down from their US government positions, raising concerns that an exodus of top leaders may make the federal government more vulnerable to hacking. Two of those resigning – Sean Kelley, the chief information security officer for the Environmental Protection Agency, and Richard Staropoli, the chief information officer for the Department of Homeland Security – had been in their jobs for just a few months.”

Indiana GOP Suppresses Metro Votes to Favor Suburbs

How the Indiana GOP used uneven early voting rules to tamp down Democratic votes. New York Magazine:“An investigative report by the Indianapolis Star lays out a pretty open-and-shut case of voter suppression by the Indiana GOP: State and local Republicans have expanded early voting in GOP-dominated areas and restricted it in Democratic areas, an IndyStar investigation has found, prompting a significant change in Central Indiana voting patterns. That made voting more convenient in GOP areas for people with transportation issues or busy schedules. And the results were immediate.”

Nixon WH Counsel John Dean Sees Similarities to Watergate

Dean sees echoes of Watergate in Trump WH. NPR:“The echoes I hear are there is clearly a cover-up in the White House. If you did not want to have all this suspicion about what they’re doing, you’d have everybody who was involved come into a room and say, ‘OK, I want sworn affidavits. I want to clean this up. I don’t want to have this hanging over my administration’… Well, that’s exactly the opposite of what they’re doing. So this is very similar to — this is the pattern in Watergate… There are echoes, and during Watergate, we wrote what you shouldn’t do. We wrote the book on it. And Trump doesn’t even seem to know what happened.'”

New Wave of Democratic Women Run for Office

Democrats Have a Problem. Can These Women Fix It? The Nation:“For a host of reasons, the election of the pussy-grabbing, utterly incompetent, nationally embarrassing Donald Trump has inspired a stunning wave of female newcomers to electoral politics. Since November, an astonishing 16,000 women have contacted Emily’s List, which works to elect pro-choice Democratic women, to say they want to run. In the 2015–16 election cycle, only 920 women did that.”

Trump demands Friday health care vote

We all know how this turned out, the history is important to remember.

These nations have UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE:

Trump demands Friday health care vote

The moment of truth arrives for the Republican Party’s years-long drive to repeal the health care law.

03/23/17 11:58 AM EDT

President Donald Trump is demanding a vote Friday in the House on the Republican plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, White House budget director Mick Mulvaney told GOP lawmakers. If the bill fails, Trump is prepared to move on and leave Obamacare in place, Mulvaney warned.

The surprise announcement by the top White House official — made with the full support of Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and other House GOP leaders — came during a closed-door meeting of Republicans Thursday evening in the basement of the Capitol.

Mulvaney, a member of the House until a few weeks ago who now heads the Office of Management and Budget, said Trump was done negotiating and wanted an up-or-down vote now.

The move by Trump and Ryan is an enormous gamble, setting up a real cliffhanger when the legislation hits the floor on Friday.

All day Thursday, the White House and GOP leaders lacked the votes to pass the American Health Care Act. A loss on the House floor would be a glaring embarrassment for the new president and House speaker — one that could undermine other parts of the GOP legislative agenda, including tax reform.

A victory, on the other hand, would provide not just a shot of badly-needed momentum for both men, but undermine the House Freedom Caucus, the group of conservative hard-liners who've fought the GOP health care plan because it doesn't go far enough.

The group's opposition was seen as a public rebuke to both the White House and House GOP leadership. If the the Freedom Caucus loses to Trump and Ryan, its power will be curtailed. If it wins, the group will once again be able to dictate terms to party leaders.

Yet this is the showdown that many mainstream GOP rank-and-file members have sought. They want a fight out in the open with the Freedom Caucus — either the group votes against Trump, or it gives in.

Negotiations between Trump and the Freedom Caucus hit an impasse earlier Thursday its members were told recent concessions from the White House and GOP leadership represented a final offer. The group rejected that, wanting more.

The setbacks triggered another series of meetings later Thursday — between Trump and the moderate Tuesday Group, and separately between the Freedom Caucus and Ryan. That was followed by a full GOP Conference meeting where Trump played his trump card.

Trump and Ryan had found themselves playing see-saw with moderates and hard-liners: Lean too much toward one faction and they lose votes from the other. So far, they've been unable to find a sweet spot.

Ryan can afford to lose only 22 votes on the floor. The Freedom Caucus has three dozen members, many of whom have vowed to block the bill unless they get what they want. More than a dozen centrist Republicans have also come out against the bill, further endangering its prospects.

But the Trump-Ryan gambit may pay off. Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) said the move by Trump and Ryan “certainly does” put enormous pressure on the Freedom Caucus to get behind the bill. And already a handful sounded like their positions were softer than they had been before.

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), who said he remains undecided, added that efforts by the Freedom Caucus had “improved the bill.” Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) said members will feel more pressure to vote "yes" with the bill on the floor, even if they may have felt comfortable opposing it before. Sanford said he was undecided.

Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.) was a "no" but is now undecided.

"I've got to decide whether this is best for my district and best for the president and best for my country. And I'm not convinced it will bend the cost curve down... but it may be as good as it gets on this one," DesJarlais said.

“We get elected to make votes, and this is a big vote,” added Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), a Freedom Caucus member who supports the bill and called it “the right thing to do.”

“I think it passes," he added.

GOP Rep. Tom Reed (R-N.Y.) said Mulvaney "put it completely in focus. The moment is now. Do we advance the cause so we can move forward and move on and accomplish what we said we would and repeal and replace Obamacare ... and also tax reform? It's a major test, and we're gonna pass that test tomorrow."

"If we vote it down, we will neuter Donald Trump's presidency ... We are not going to undermine the president's ability to get things done,” Rep. Dana Rohrabacher told reporters after the meeting.

A senior administration official in the room for the Freedom Caucus meeting at the White House said most members left the meeting as "no's" but suggested some flipped to "yes." While Trump did not go around the room and ask people how they would vote, it became immediately clear GOP leaders did not appear to win over enough members to put the measure over the top.

"We're down right now," the official said.

Freedom Caucus chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) told reporters in the Capitol Thursday afternoon that "we have not gotten enough of our members to get to yes at this point. … However, I would say progress is being made." He called Trump's engagement in the negotiations perhaps "unparalleled in the history of our country."

There were daunting obstacles to a deal heading into the White House meeting Thursday morning. A number of Freedom Caucus members had suggested Trump’s latest concession — repealing Obamacare's mandate that insurance plans provide a minimum level of "essential" benefits — wasn't enough. The group wants a complete repeal of all Affordable Care Act regulations — including popular provisions Trump promised he would maintain.

The conservatives' target list encompasses a prohibition against discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions and a requirement that adults up to age 26 can remain on their parents’ health insurance.

“Repealing [essential health benefits], w/out making other substantial changes, would make the bill worse, not better,” tweeted Freedom Caucus member Justin Amash (R-Mich.). “It would hurt the sickest people on exchanges.”

The Freedom Caucus has been a constant thorn in the side of House GOP leadership, sinking bills its members believe were too accommodating to Democrats. The group was expected to fall in line behind Trump after he won, but it has refused to do so on the health care bill.

Now, Freedom Caucus members are threatening to trip up not John Boehner or Ryan, but a Republican commander-in-chief who remains highly popular in their districts.

Many House Republicans are furious with the Freedom Caucus, saying the group keeps moving the goal posts and that it really wants to sink the health care bill altogether.

“The president is good at negotiating, but he has to have someone who wants to get to yes,” Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.), an ardent Trump supporter, told POLITICO. “I was never able to sell a car or a truck to someone who didn’t want a car or a truck. It just doesn’t work. And that’s where we are right now. I don’t think they’re really interested in getting to an ‘end.’”

Kelly then added: “Maybe the ‘end’ is: making sure it doesn’t pass.”

Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan contributed to this report.

RSN: Bannon Tells Trump: 'Keep a Shit List' of Republicans Who Opposed You

Both the Thin Skinned Bully and Steve Banana [who committed fraud] believe in genetic superiority which in itself debunks that myth.

The TRUMPCARE proposal was an attack on Americans' Health Care and many spoke out, protested, disrupted Town Hall meetings and made it clear that there would be a price to pay for their support of the GOP REPEALING OBAMACARE.

BRAVO to those who refused to support the TRUMPCARE abomination!

Bannon Tells Trump: 'Keep a Shit List' of Republicans Who Opposed You

By Asawin Suebsaeng, The Daily Beast
24 March 17

Trumpcare is in trouble and if it fails, Steve Bannon has pledged to remember who defied the White House.
f TrumpCare dies, the White House won’t forget who killed it — and plans on keeping a “shit list” of Republicans who stood in their way.
According to multiple Trump administration officials speaking to The Daily Beast on the condition of anonymity to talk freely, the president is angry that his first big legislative push is crumbling before his eyes—and his chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon is advising him to take names and keep a hit list of Republicans who worked for Trumpcare’s defeat.
“[Bannon] has told the president to keep a shit list on this,” one official told The Daily Beast. “He wants a running tally of [the Republicans] who want to sink this…Not sure if I’d call it an ‘enemies list,’ per se, but I wouldn’t want to be on it.”
One aide described it as a proposed “hit list” for Republicans not sufficiently loyal. Courses of action stemming from any related tally is yet to be determined, but the idea and message is that “we’ll remember you.”
Two senior Trump administration officials with direct knowledge of the process told The Daily Beast that Bannon and Trump have taken a “you’re either with us or against us” approach at this point, and that Bannon wants the tally of “against” versus “with us” mounted in his so-called West Wing “war room.”
“Burn the boats,” Bannon (in his typical, pugnacious style) advised Trump, according to one official involved. Burning one’s boats is a reference to when military commanders in hostile territories order his or her troops to destroy their own ships, so that they have to win or die trying.
Sources also said that others including Mick Mulvaney, Trump's director of the Office of Management and Budget and co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus, endorsed the idea of the running list, and that Trump agreed with the idea.
Emails to the White House and Bannon seeking comment were not immediately returned.
Freedom Caucus members, of course, are no strangers to barely-veiled threats from Trumpworld, and have remained undeterred this week by earlier attempts. On Tuesday, when Trump made his high-profile visit to Capitol Hill to try to rally Republicans to get behind his and Ryan’s plan, Trump specifically called out Rep. Mark Meadows, chairman of the Freedom Caucus, several times. According to those in the room, the president made it clear that he expected Meadows’ vote and support when push comes to shove. (As of Friday late morning, Meadows is saying he’s not budging yet.)
“Mark, I’m coming after you,” Trump said, only half-jokingly, on Tuesday.
Freedom Caucus aides said they were similarly unperturbed on Friday. One simply responded to The Daily Beast’s question regarding potentially getting on Trump and Bannon’s “shit list” with one word: “Meh.”
“From day 1 in this fight, conservatives have been far more focused on keeping their promises and doing what’s best for their constituents versus any hypothetical political challenges,” another conservative congressional aide said. “That remains unchanged.”
Republican House members jumping ship on the AHCA, both in the hardline-right and so-called “moderate” camps, are hardly alone in their buyer’s remorse. On Thursday night, The New York Times reported that Trump himself has told four people close to him that he regrets going along with Speaker Ryan’s plan.
Bannon, for his part, is hardly pleased with the bill as it stands. According to Trump administration officials, Bannon himself hates the current AHCA—“he thinks it’s a piece of shit…and he told me as such,” one source described bluntly. “But, I mean, he's not going against [the president].”
If Trumpcare/Ryancare goes down in flames, a great share of the blame will inevitably be shoveled onto Speaker Ryan and House GOP leadership—a Republican leadership that just two short years ago Bannon was calling out as “all cunts.”

Progressive Breakfast: The Biggest House Race Of 2016: Teachout vs. Faso

MORNING MESSAGE

Bill Scher
The Biggest House Race Of 2016: Teachout vs. Faso
If [Zephyr] Teachout holds on to that three-point lead and overcomes [John] Faso’s Super PAC money, she will not only be an example of how small-donor campaigns can triumph over corporate cash in swing districts. She will also be a case study of how progressive populists can use a combination of policy detail and political jiu-jitsu to beat back right-wing attacks.

KKK TRIES TO SWAY ELECTION

KKK embraces Trump. Mother Jones:“The KKK quarterly The Crusader (‘The Premier Voice Of The White Resistance’) devoted its latest front page to a throaty defense of Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan … [KKK leader Pastor Thomas] Robb stopped short of calling it a formal endorsement … The Trump campaign … issued a statement denouncing the paper.”
“White nationalists plot Election Day show of force” reports Politico:“The National Socialist Movement, various factions of the Ku Klux Klan and the white nationalist American Freedom Party all are deploying members to watch polls, either ‘informally’ or, they say, through the Trump campaign. The Oath Keepers, a group of former law enforcement and military members that often shows up in public heavily armed, is advising members to go undercover and conduct ‘intelligence-gathering’ at polling places, and Donald Trump ally Roger Stone is organizing his own exit polling, aiming to monitor thousands of precincts across the country.”

BACKLASH AGAINST SCHUMER, RYAN

“Liberals wary of Schumer tax plan” reports The Hill:“Sen. Charles Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) ideas for overhauling the tax system are encountering skepticism on the left … viewing them as too favorable to corporations at a time when populist sentiment is running high … Schumer has floated the idea of ‘deemed repatriation’ for corporate earnings outside the U.S. and a minimum tax on future foreign earnings regardless of whether they are repatriated. While Schumer has not specified the rates he would like to see for those taxes, he has suggested they should be lower than 35 percent … opposition from the left is unlikely to deter Schumer, who has shown a willingness to take on the liberal base in the past.”
House Freedom Caucus plots post-election strategy. Politico:“Top members of the House Freedom Caucus will hold a rare, pre-election strategy session in Washington on Wednesday to chart the group’s moves in November and beyond. One of the most pressing questions preoccupying Washington is what the group will do about Paul Ryan…”

PRESSURE TO SHAPE CLINTON CABINET

Congressional people of color press Clinton for diverse cabinet. The Hill:“The congressional Hispanic, Asian and black caucuses recently held separate meetings with Clinton’s transition team to put forward names of minority candidates for Cabinet and high-ranking administration posts … Former Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who is heading the transition team, attended some of those meetings … Here are some of the names the so-called Tri-Caucus … has floated…”
WP edit board slams progressives for trying to shape Clinton cabinet:” Ms. Clinton is being told, apparently, to apply a series of litmus tests to her potential nominees … The advance veto on future nominees that Ms. Warren and Mr. Sanders are seeking, if carried to its logical extreme, would make them de facto usurpers of presidential power.”

BERNIE FLEXES MUSCLE

Bernie Sanders opposes MA ballot initiative to greatly increase number of charter schools. Boston Herald quotes:“Wall Street must not be allowed to hijack public education in Massachusetts.”
Sanders calls out drug company for price gouging. The Hill:“Eli Lilly’s stock dropped nearly 2 percentage points after Sanders criticized the rising price of the company’s Humalog brand insulin, citing a Washington Post report on soaring costs of the diabetes drug.”
