Reich writes: "Billionaires are wailing that Elizabeth Warren's and Bernie Sanders's wealth tax proposals are attacks on free market capitalism.

Warren “vilifies successful people,” says Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase. 

Rubbish. There are basically only five ways to accumulate a billion dollars, and none of them has to do with being successful in free market capitalism.    

The first way is to exploit a monopoly.

Jamie Dimon is worth $1.6 billion. That’s not because he succeeded in the free market. In 2008 the government bailed out JPMorgan and four other giant Wall Street banks because it considered them “too big to fail.” 

That bailout is a hidden insurance policy, still in effect, with an estimated value to the big banks of $83 billion a year. If JPMorgan weren’t so big and was therefore allowed to fail, Dimon would be worth far less than $1.6 billion. 

What about America’s much-vaulted entrepreneurs, such as Jeff Bezos, now worth $110 billion? You might say Bezos deserves this because he founded and built Amazon.

But Amazon is a monopolist with nearly 50 percent of all e-commerce retail sales in America, and e-commerce is one of the biggest sectors of retail sales. In addition, Amazon’s business is protected by a slew of patents granted by the U.S. government. 

If the government enforced anti-monopoly laws, and didn’t give Amazon such broad patents,Bezos would be worth far less than $110 billion. 

A second way to make a billion is to get insider information unavailable to other investors. 

Hedge-fund maven Steven A. Cohen, worth $12.8 billion, headed up a hedge fund firm in which, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Justice Department, insider trading was “substantial, pervasive, and on a scale without known precedent in the hedge fund industry.” Nine of Cohen’s present or former employees pleaded guilty or were convicted. Cohen got off with a fine, changed the name of his firm, and apparently is back at the game.  

Insider trading is endemic in C-suites, too. SEC researchers have found that corporate executives are twice as likely to sell their stock on the days following their own stock buyback announcements as they are in the days leading up to the  announcements. 

If government cracked down on insider-trading, hedge-fund mavens and top corporate executives wouldn’t be raking in so much money. 

A third way to make a billion is to buy off politicians. 

The Trump tax cut is estimated to save Charles and the late David Koch and their Koch Industries an estimated $1 to $1.4 billion a year, not even counting their tax savings on profits stored offshore and a shrunken estate tax. The Kochs and their affiliated groups spent some $20 million lobbying for the Trump tax cut, including political donations. Not a bad return on investment.

If we had tough anti-corruption laws preventing political payoffs, the Kochs and other high-rollers wouldn’t get the special tax breaks and other subsidies that have enlarged their fortunes.  

The fourth way to make a billion is to extort big investors.

Adam Neumann conned JP Morgan, SoftBank, and other investors to sink hundreds of millions into WeWork, an office-sharing startup. Neumann used some of the money to buy buildings he leased back to WeWork and to enjoy a lifestyle that included a $60 million private jet. WeWork never made a nickel of profit. 

A few months ago, after Neumann was forced to disclose his personal conflicts of interest, WeWork’s initial public offering fell apart and the company’s estimated value plummeted. To salvage what they could, investors paid him over $1 billion to exit the board and give up his voting rights. Most other WeWork employees were left holdingnear-worthless stock options. Thousands were set to be laid off. 

If we had tougher anti-fraud laws, Neumann and others like him wouldn’t be billionaires. 

The fifth way to be a billionaire is to get the money from rich parents or relatives.

About 60 percent of all the wealth in America today is inherited, according to estimates by economist Thomas Piketty and his colleagues. That’s because, under U.S. tax law – which is itself largely a product of lobbying by the wealthy – the capital gains of one generation are wiped out when those assets are transferred to the next, and the estate tax is so tiny that fewer than 0.2 percent of estates were subject to it last year.  

If unearned income were treated the same as earned income under the tax code, America’s non-working rich wouldn’t be billionaires. And if capital gains weren’t eliminated at death, many heirs wouldn’t be, either.

Capitalism doesn’t work well with monopolies, insider-trading, political payoffs, fraud, and large amounts of inherited wealth. Billionaires who don’t like Sanders’s and Warren’s wealth tax should at least support reforms that end these anti-capitalist advantages.

espite industry claims to the contrary, history shows that there is simply no safe way to transport fossil fuels, and pipelines are no exception.

The rate and volume of pipeline spills in the U.S. has increased in recent years, with devastating consequences for communities and our environment. In the past decade, U.S. pipeline spills have led to 20 fatalities, 35 injuries, $2.6 billion in costs and more than 34 million gallons spilled. That's an average of 9,000 gallons of hazardous liquids spilled every single day for ten years.

And yet Donald Trump's pro-fossil fuel agenda means we could be facing a massive expansion of the U.S. pipeline network, including increased development in the Canadian tar sands. If that happens, it would be disastrous for the climate and violate the rights of tribes and First Nations on both sides of the border.

It would also mean more pipeline spills—lots of them.

Three companies—TransCanada, Kinder Morgan and Enbridge—want to build new pipelines to transport oil from the Canadian tar sands into the U.S. Together, they've seen 373 spills totaling 63,221 barrels of hazardous liquids since 2010.

Needless to say, this is a less than stellar track record.

Keystone XL builder TransCanada has by far the smallest U.S. pipeline network of the three, yet has still seen 13 spills in the last six years. Enbridge, which wants to expand its Line 3 pipeline through Minnesota and Wisconsin, has seen 147 spills. And Kinder Morgan, builder of the Trans Mountain pipeline in the Pacific Northwest, has seen 213 spills.

The largest of those was a massive spill from an Enbridge pipeline near Marshall, Michigan in 2010 that dumped more than 1 million gallons of crude oil into the Kalamazoo River. Tar sands oil from the ruptured pipeline flowed freely for 17 hours and reached 40 miles downriver.

Tar sands oil spills are particularly hard to clean up because unlike crude oil, tar sands oil sinks in water.

If these companies—and others like them—are allowed to continue expanding the tar sands pipeline network, another Kalamazoo-sized spill is a very real threat. Given TransCanada's history, the Keystone XL pipeline could expect 59 significant spills in 50 years, while Enbridge's Line 3 Expansion would be expected to see 51 significant spills.

Our climate and communities cannot afford that. But there is a way to stop these pipelines from being built in the first place.

We know Trump is not going to step in to stop these projects; he already issued an executive orderto "fast-track" the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines in January.

But he can't control the financial markets.

It's time to put the banks funding these dangerous pipelines on notice, starting with JPMorgan Chase. As the sixth-largest bank in the world—and one that publicly supported the Paris climate agreement—JPMorgan Chase has a responsibility to cut ties to this climate and human rights disaster.

In an interview broadcast Sunday, the Democratic presidential candidate said he could win over the supporters of none other than Donald Trump, the current GOP frontrunner.

“Look, many of Trump’s supporters are working-class people, and they’re angry,” Mr. Sanders said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “And they’re angry because they’re working longer hours for lower wages. They’re angry because their jobs have left this country and gone to China or other low-wage countries.”

The self-declared Democratic socialist and his businessman opponent are both outsiders in their respective political parties. Sanders currently trails behind Hillary Clinton, but instead of appealing to voters among fellow Democrats in his television appearance Sunday, he’s looking across the aisle.

By tapping into the frustration of Mr. Trump’s voters, the Vermont Senator said, he would court them with shrewd economic policies instead of impudent rhetoric.

“What Trump has done with some success is taken that anger, taken those fears which are legitimate, and converted them into anger against Mexicans, anger against Muslims,” he said, “and in my view that is not the way we’re going to address the major problems facing our country.”

Sanders went on to suggest that Trump’s proposed tax breaks to the wealthy would be counterproductive for his supporters, a significant portion of whom earn less than the national average income.

“The real issues are not Donald Trump’s vulgarity – and he is vulgar. It is the fact that Donald Trump thinks we should not be raising the minimum wage,” Sanders continued. “He believes that wages in America are too high. This guy wants to give hundreds of billions of dollars in tax breaks to the top three-tenths of the one percent, and meanwhile what he wants to do is divide our country between Latinos and Americans and Muslims and everybody else.”

“In fact,” Sanders added, “he has said that he thinks wages in America are too high.”

To this point, Trump objected in response on Twitter.

He reiterated his position – that wages, in fact, are too low – in a series of tweets Monday. But in previous interviews, the real-estate mogul has claimed otherwise.

"We have to become competitive with the world. Our taxes are too high, our wages are too high. Everything is too high. We have to compete with other countries,” he said in a November interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

But does Sanders really have a chance in swaying the votes of Trump’s sturdy base of supporters? Considering at one point, polls showed that up to 20 percent of Trump supporters consider themselves “moderate” or “liberal,” Sanders might have a chance.

"For his working-class and middle-class support," Sanders said, "we can make the case that if we really want to address the issues that people are concerned about ... we need policies that bring us together, that take on the greed of Wall Street, the greed of corporate America, and create a middle class that works for all of us rather than an economy that works just for a few."

125 extra UK military trainers to be sent to Iraq | 07 June 2015 | The UK is to send an extra 125 military trainers to Iraq to help in the battle against Islamic State, the PM has said. MoD sought sensitive children's data for possible recruitment drive | 06 June 2015 | The UK Ministry of Defense (MoD) has been blocked from accessing highly sensitive data on school students, including how rich their parents are and their academic record, which they sought to better inform them of military career opportunities. Thousands protest G7 summit in southern Germany | 06 June 2015 | Thousands of demonstrators packed a German Alpine resort town on Saturday to protest a wide range of causes, from climate change to free trade corporate slavery, before the arrival of the leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized democracies for a two-day summit. Sixth Person Dies of MERS Virus in South Korea | 08 June 2015 | South Korea on Monday reported its sixth death from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome as authorities were bolstering measures to stem the spread of the virus that has left dozens of people infected. A total of 87 people in South Korea have been infected by MERS since last month in the largest outbreak outside the Middle East. About 1,870 schools have closed and more than 2,000 people are isolated at their homes or state-run facilities after having contact with patients infected with the virus.

 

FBI aware of multiple potential victims in Hastert case | 05 June 2015 | CBS News has learned that during the investigation into Dennis Hastert, the FBI became aware of as many as two, maybe three, potential victims alleging sexual misconduct by the House speaker. Hastert last month was indicted and charged with violating federal banking laws and lying to FBI investigators. According to the indictment, Hastert agreed to pay 3.5 million in 2010 to a person identified only as "Individual A," in an effort to "compensate and conceal" Hastert's "prior misconduct." "Individual A" is one of the alleged victims the FBI may have interviewed, according to the source.

 

Marco Rubio and His Wife Cited 17 Times for Traffic Infractions | 05 June 2015 | Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) has been in a hurry to get to the top, rising from state legislator to United States senator in the span of a decade and now running for president at age 44...He and his wife, Jeanette, have also shown a tendency to be in a rush on the road. According to a search of the Miami-Dade and Duval County court dockets, the Rubios have been cited for numerous infractions over the years for incidents that included speeding, driving through red lights and careless driving. A review of records dating back to 1997 shows that the couple had a combined 17 citations: Mr. Rubio with four and his wife with 13.

 

In Sworn Statement, Ex-Official Says Chris Christie Broke Grand Jury Law | 07 June 2015 | The players at the center of the George Washington Bridge lane-closing scandal are not finished causing headaches for Gov. Chris Christie. The latest indication comes in a sworn statement by David Wildstein, a former Port Authority official and the admitted mastermind of the access-lane closings, that describes Mr. Christie breaking the law as he exercised a heavy hand over state politics from the front office. Mr. Wildstein's statement, in a civil case separate from the federal prosecution in the bridge case, offers the first insider confirmation of a long-rumored tale of New Jersey political corruption, and places Mr. Christie at the center of it. It also portrays the governor, a former United States attorney, casually revealing information about a grand jury proceeding he had overseen, which violates federal law.

 

Overdraft fees top $2.5B for U.S. banks in first three months of year | 27 May 2015 | America's three biggest banks -- JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo -- made more than 1.1 billion on overdraft fees in the first three months of the year. If the fee collection pace keeps up, the big three banks are on track bring in 4.5 billion in overdraft charges by the end of this year...In all, the nearly 600 U.S. banks that had to disclose their overdraft fees made just over 2.5 billion from consumers who overdrew their accounts in January, February or March.

The unpredictable Blanca, which strengthened suddenly from a category one to a category four storm on Saturday before weakening slightly, is expected to make landfall as a tropical storm on Monday. But authorities said its outer bands could start hitting the southern Baja California Peninsula as a hurricane on Sunday.

 

Man Calls 911 to Resolve 3-Hour Standoff With Angry House Cat | 05 June 2015 | A Stamford, Connecticut, man called 911 this week for help as a standoff with his house cat entered its third hour, leaving him stuck outside the house. Audio of the 911 call, placed at around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, makes it clear the man wasn't kitten around, either. "My cat was getting too aggressive," Mohammed Lokman can be heard telling the 911 operator. Police told News12 that the 7.5-pound feline had given birth the night before and that she apparently became aggressive when the man left the house and then attempted to return.
