RSN: Jeffrey Toobin | The Pointless Cowardice of John Boehner

Boeher and the Republican Party have allowed a few Wack-A-Ding Tea Bagger Extremists to hold government captive to their narrow views.

That's not LEADERSHIP!

Just because the Wack-A-Dings elected courtesy of Dirty Energy Koch $$$ and their ilk can shout the loudest does not make them more than a handful of poorly educated people willing to follow propaganda.

Grassroots wins out! That's why Koch Sock Puppet Scooter Brown lost to 2 women - Senators Elizabeth Warren and Jeanne Shaheen.

The mainstream interpretation John Boehner’s forced resignation as the Speaker of the House gives him too much credit.

he mainstream reaction to the forced resignation of John Boehner as the Speaker of the House has been a kind of weary admiration. He fought the good fight against the extremists in his Republican caucus, the narrative goes, but his solid Midwestern virtues (he’s from Ohio) were ultimately no contest for the extremism of the Tea Party. This interpretation is far too generous to Boehner, whose failures, political and substantive, were due mostly to cowardice. The tragedy of Boehner is that he could have been a great Speaker, even on his own terms, but instead his legacy is one of almost complete failure.
Boehner long made it clear that he was a dedicated party man, who believed that what was good for the G.O.P. was good for the country as well. This is how the issue of comprehensive immigration reform came to be the true crucible of his speakership. Following President Obama’s reĆ«lection, in 2012, it was clear that Republicans had to try to appeal to Hispanic voters. In March of 2013, Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, released a report saying that the Party “must embrace and champion comprehensive immigration reform.” In short order, many Republicans in the Senate, including such prominent figures as John McCain and Marco Rubio, did just that, and a bill which included a path to citizenship for a majority of undocumented immigrants passed by a vote of sixty-eight to thirty-two.
Boehner also supported immigration reform, at least in its broad outlines—because he correctly saw that it was good for both his party and his country. And there was no doubt that the reform bill could pass the House, with the support of most Democrats and a substantial number of Republicans as well. But Boehner’s Tea Party colleagues in the House opposed immigration reform. So the choice for Boehner, who controlled the House floor, was clear: pass a historic bill that would be good for the Republicans and for the republic, or appease the extremist elements in his party in hopes of hanging on to his position as Speaker.
Boehner caved, refusing to bring the bill to the floor for a vote, and he suffered the fate of all those who give in to bullies; he was bullied some more. This year, the fight was over the highway bill, another piece of popular legislation that Boehner himself and a majority of the House (as well as the Senate and the President) supported—as well they might, given that maintenance of roads and bridges represents some of the basic work of government. But again the Tea Party intimidated Boehner into keeping the bill off the floor, depriving the Speaker of another major accomplishment.
Boehner adopted an extreme version of the so-called Hastert rule, named for his predecessor as Speaker, Dennis Hastert, who is now under indictment for alleged financial crimes connected to blackmail payments (he has pleaded not guilty). The Hastert rule holds that the Speaker should never allow a vote on a bill unless it’s supported by a majority of the Republican caucus. But Boehner’s approach was to keep bills off the floor that were opposed by a minority of Republicans—the Tea Party caucus, which only numbers about fifty—effectively giving them a veto over the work of the House. Nothing came to the floor without their say-so, so that meant that nothing much came to the floor except for symbolic exercises like votes to repeal Obamacare or to defund Planned Parenthood.
When Boehner announced his impending departure, he expressed pride that he had kept the government open (after a sixteen-day shutdown in 2013) and raised the debt limit. This, to paraphrase a famous Republican, reflects the soft bigotry of low expectations. Keeping the government open and paying its debts are the minimal undertakings of an elected body, not legislative triumphs. But Boehner could point to almost nothing else that happened on his watch, because the Tea Party would tolerate nothing else.
And what did Boehner’s cowardice in the face of the Tea Party stalwarts get him? They forced him out anyway. Boehner built his career around keeping his job, and he still failed. If Boehner had allowed the passage of immigration reform, it’s entirely possible that the Tea Party would have rebelled and evicted him—but at least he would have had a substantial accomplishment to his credit. Instead, Boehner tried nothing, accomplished nothing, and lost his job anyway. It’s the legacy he deserves.

Mainstream Republicans like Boehner allow fifty Tea Party idiots to run roughshod over the entire legislative process, and as usual, We the People lose.

The entire Tea Party faction behaves like the emperor with no clothes. They should be hounded out of every capitol building in the country, preferably dressed in tar and feathers.

I don't know what scares me more the 50 Tea party idiots, or the idiots that voted them into office.

Stupid is as stupid does and stupid is getting a whole lot bigger lately.

"Instead, Boehner tried nothing, accomplished nothing, and lost his job anyway. It’s the legacy he deserves."

Funny, but that is sort of how I describe the failure to get Medicare-for-Al l single-payer healthcare. Obama, Reid, and Pelosi didn't have the courage to do what our country needed, even for the good of the Democratic Party, instead giving in to the BlueDogs and HMO-bought-stoo ges and created a Rube-Goldbergia n monstrosity of essentially HeritageFoundat ionCare/Romneyc are. And the result? A public that doesn't understand it, was angered by it, and a resulting GOP take over of Congress just a few years later. Medicare-for-Al l would have angered the HMO's, but the public would have understood it and would have loved its simplicity, lower costs, and it would have set the stage for continued Democratic electoral successes and a more Progressive agenda for years to come.

The rebels surrendered six pick-up trucks and some ammunition, or about one-quarter of their issued equipment, to a suspected Nusra intermediary on Sept. 21-22 in exchange for safe passage, said Colonel Patrick Ryder, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, in a statement. "If accurate, the report of NSF members providing equipment to al Nusra Front is very concerning and a violation of Syria train and equip program guidelines," Ryder said, using an acronym for the rebels, called the New Syrian Forces.

Secret Document: NSA Spied on Iranians in New York | 23 Sept 2015 | The NSA will probably spy on foreign leaders like Iranian President Hassan Rouhani during the UN General Assembly in New York this week, applying a "full court press" that includes intercepting cellphone calls and bugging hotel rooms, former intelligence analysts told NBC News. A top-secret report on a previous NSA operation against Iran's U.N. delegation illustrates just how extensive this electronic surveillance can be. The document, obtained by NBC News, shows the U.S. bugged the hotel rooms and phones of then-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his entire 143-member delegation in 2007, listening to thousands of conversations and learning the "social networks" of Iran's leadership. The three-page document, called "Tips for a Successful Quick Reaction Capability," recounted what happened when the NSA was asked by the Bush administration for blanket surveillance of Ahmadinejad's September 2007 trip to the UNGA.

On a day that blended the splendor of an ancient church with the frenzy of a modern rock star tour, Francis waded quietly but forcefully into some of the most polarizing issues of American civic life. Along the way, he underscored just how much he has upended the agenda of the Roman Catholic Church and reordered its priorities.

St. Louis landfill fire could reach radioactive waste in months | 18 Sept 2015 | A fire smoldering underneath a landfill north of St. Louis since 2010 could reach radioactive waste from the Manhattan Project in as little as three months, according to a report released by Missouri's attorney general. Much of the uranium used to make the first nuclear weapons was processed in downtown St. Louis, and the waste was moved around the region for decades. In 1973 a private company that bought some of the waste from the U.S. government illegally dumped it at the West Lake Landfill in Bridgeton, Missouri, a northern suburb of St. Louis...One of the reports released by Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster concluded that the underground fire could reach the West Lake Landfill's known radioactive waste in three to six months -- the consequences of which remain largely unknown. [But, what *is* known? The corporate-owned US media will not cover this privatized act of eco-terrorism.]

Hillary Clinton Proposes $250 Monthly Cap on Prescription Drug Costs | 22 Sept 2015 | Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton proposed on Tuesday a 250 monthly cap on out-of-pocket prescription drug costs and other measures to stop what she called "price gouging" by pharmaceutical companies. At a campaign stop in Iowa, Clinton rolled out a plan to encourage the development and use of generic drugs and to end pharmaceutical companies' ability to write off consumer-directed advertising as a business expense. Under Clinton's plan, the monthly cap would limit what insurance companies could ask patients to pay for drugs that treat chronic or serious medical conditions.

In blistering series of tweets, National Review 'editor' Rich Lowry brutally unloads on Donald Trump | 23 Sept 2015 | National Review Editor [sic] Rich Lowry unloaded on Donald Trump Wednesday night, after the real estate tycoon turned to Twitter to express outrage over a critical comment he made about him on Fox News. Appearing on "The [*puke*] Kelly File" earlier, Lowry said Fiorina "cut [Trump's] b*lls off with the precision of a surgeon" at the CNN debate. Trump was angered by the comment and immediately fired back on Twitter.

Former Fiorina employee: 'She is an a**hole of magnificent proportions' --Carly Fiorina's Ex-Husband: 'She's the Ultimate Clown' | 22 Sept 2015 | Carly Fiorina tries to play up that she started from the bottom and worked her way up. The truth couldn't be much farther from that. Her father was the dean of the Duke University School of Law and deputy attorney general under Richard Nixon...Fiorina was a complete disaster as CEO of Hewlett-Packard. A former employee of Fiorina was even more blunt: "She is an a**hole of magnificent proportions…pathologically unable to give a s**t about anything but herself."

Jeb Bush's Tax Plan Is a Large Tax Cut for the Wealthiest | 09 Sept 2015 | Jeb Bush's plan stays very much on script for Republican tax plans: It cuts taxes for almost everyone who pays income tax, with by far the largest tax cuts at the top. According to an analysis by The New York Times, Mr. Bush's tax plan would reduce the effective income tax rate on filers making 10 million or more per year to approximately 21 percent, down from 26 percent in 2013, the most recent year for which data are available. The average taxpayer in this group earned 29.2 million in 2013, meaning the plan proposed by Mr. Bush would have saved them an average of 1.5 million that year.

Senate stops bill defunding Planned Parenthood | 24 Sept 2015 | Democrats in the U.S. Senate, joined by some Republicans, on Thursday blocked an effort denying federal funds for the women's healthcare group Planned Parenthood in a move that could help avoid a government shutdown on Oct. 1. Most Senate Republicans had supported the plan to attach the Planned Parenthood defunding to a bill keeping government operating with the start of the new fiscal year on Oct. 1. But 42 Democrats, two independents and eight Republicans banded together to stop the anti-abortion effort on a procedural vote, 11 more than the 41 needed to block the legislation.

White House threatens to veto budget bill defunding Planned Parenthood | 24 Sept 2015 | U.S. President Barack Obama would veto legislation to continue funding the government if it strips federal money for Planned Parenthood, the White House said in a statement on Thursday. The threat came as Congress considers a bill to fund federal agencies past Sept. 30 and avoid a shutdown even as some lawmakers balk at taxpayer support for the healthcare group, which drawn protests over its use of fetal tissue from abortions. The White House said Obama would not sign any bill that included the Senate amendment eliminating the group's funding.

Giant 'dying polar bear' appears outside Shell UK headquarters in protest over Arctic drilling | 21 Sept 2015 | A giant dying polar bear has been placed outside the headquarters of oil and gas company Shell in a bid to stop their Arctic drilling programme. British actress Emma Thompson was among the protesters who manoeuvred the three-tone puppet into place, locking six people inside so the bear cannot be moved. The bear, which is the size of a double-decker bus, and is named Aurora (after the Northern Lights) is intended to sit outside the company's headquarter in South Bank, London, until they cease their drilling.
