Jack Booted Thugs in IOWA & Classless Rep. Steve King [Iowa Radical]

Democratic Challenger to Iowa Lawmaker Abandons Race Due to Death Threats

im Weaver, who was seeking to unseat Rep. Steve King in next year’s midterm elections dropped out of the race over the weekend, in part due to fears over her safety. “Beginning during my 2016 campaign, I have received very alarming acts of intimidation, including death threats,” Weaver said in a Facebook post. “While some may say enduring threats are just a part of running for office, my personal safety has increasingly become a concern.”
Weaver also said she couldn’t risk losing health coverage, which would vanish if she quit her job to campaign full time for the House seat. “Most importantly, my mother lives in Des Moines and has been experiencing ongoing health issues. I feel that it’s necessary to be more available to support her,” she wrote. “Considering this, along with the time and energy it takes to succeed as a candidate, I realize that I can’t fully commit to both.”
In an interview with the Des Moines Register, Weaver also justified her decision by saying that the state office she works for had suffered budget cuts as “punishment” for her candidacy. She told the paper the intimidating phone calls and messages increased after the paper published a story about her efforts to build a career as an internet psychic.
King, a notoriously anti-immigrant lawmaker who is not shy about making racist statements, has been in the House for 14 years. In the last election, Weaver lost to King in 38 of the 39 counties in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District.
King responded to news of Weaver dropping out of the race by accusing her of making up the death threats. “Death threats likely didn't happen but a fabrication,” King wrote on Twitter.

Rep. Steve King Stands By Controversial Tweet About 'Somebody Else's Babies'

This deserves to STAND ALONE for Rep. Steve King's continuous ignorance and stupidity.

Rep. Steve King Stands By Controversial Tweet About 'Somebody Else's Babies'

Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King, who has a history of controversial statements on immigration and race, is drawing condemnation for a Sunday tweet in support of a right-wing Dutch politician, in which King wrote, "We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies."
King's tweet came in support of Geert Wilders, a Dutch parliamentarian who hopes to lead that country's government in Wednesday's elections. Wilders has called for banning the Quran in the Netherlands and shutting down mosques.
That has led to a series of statements and tweets slamming King. Iowa GOP Chairman Jeff Kaufmann said, "I do not agree with Congressman King's statement. We are a nation of immigrants, and diversity is the strength of any nation and any community."
Conservative commentator Bill Kristol tweeted: "Is it worth making the obvious point that what American history has been about is 'restoring' ourselves with 'somebody else's babies?'
NBC News special correspondent Tom Brokaw, author of The Greatest Generation, sounded a similar note:
But King also has his supporters, including former KKK grand wizard David Duke, who tweeted "GOD BLESS STEVE KING!!! #TruthRISING." Duke also suggested "sanity reigns supreme" in King's congressional district.
Duke's support seemed to spur the response from Kaufmann, the Iowa GOP chairman, which came under the heading: "David Duke isn't welcome in Iowa."
And King himself refused to back away from the tweet. On CNN Monday morning, King said, "I meant exactly what I said," and that he'd "like to see an America that's just so homogeneous that we look a lot the same, from that perspective."

Editor’s Note: We must watch our “representatives.” If they aren’t representing us with compassion–they must go! We must remove these so-called government “leaders” serving in Congress and in other legislative bodies, as well as any other elected officials who aren’t holding the highest standards for the people and for the planet. Compassion must be the priority. If we lose our compassion, we are lost… We as a people must take a stand for compassion and say “enough” greed, abuse, and deception (and stupidity.) These lawmakers and other public officials who support these abuses must go! ‪#‎SpeakTruthToPower‬ ‪#‎AllLivesMatter‬ ‪#‎AnimalLivesMatter‬

Washington Post: “Kathleen Parker: Steve King’s inhumane farm bill measure”

In one of the early episodes of “Portlandia,” the satirical show that makes fun of all things Portland, Ore., a couple dining out interviews the waitress about their potential chicken dinner.
Specifically, they want to know details of the chicken’s diet (sheep’s milk, soy and hazelnuts), his free-roaming privileges and roaming area (four acres), whether he had friends and was a happy chicken, and so on. Their server answers patiently, even producing Colin’s papers. Colin, that is, the chicken.
So goes the joke on people who get a tad carried away about the quality of life of the animals whose slaughter they ultimately condone and whose flesh they consume. It was, if you’ll pardon the expression, delicious.

The GOP Picked the Worst Lawmaker Possible to Chair a Task Force on Immigration

By Esther Yu-Hsi Lee, ThinkProgress
06 February 16

epublican lawmakers who are unhappy with the perceived “executive overreach” of the Obama administration are forming a new task force to find “legislative solutions” to challenge the president’s power — and they picked a telling lawmaker to lead the effort. Rep. Steve King (R-IA), a passionate anti-immigrant hardliner, will serve as chairman.
The task force will conduct hearings and investigations “relating to separation of powers and executive overreach issues,” according to the resolution approved on a voice vote on Wednesday. It’s unclear which of President Obama’s executive actions the task force will focus on, but immigration policies will probably feature prominently.
Ever since Obama took executive action in 2012 to grant temporary deportation relief to certain undocumented immigrants under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, House Republicans have accused him of executive overreach, holding several hearings on the matter. In a recent op-ed in USA Today, for instance, Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) lamented that Obama “essentially stopped the enforcement of our immigration laws, provided quasi-legal status to unlawful immigrants.”
King’s choice as the chairman could prove troubling for the direction of the task force. The Iowa lawmaker has a particularly virulently vocal anti-immigrant history, a fact that may have contributed to him being passed over for ranking Republican committee spots in the past.
Here are just six examples that show King may not by suitable as the chairman.
1. That time King said to treat people that cross the border like “livestock.”
In 2006, King took to the House floor with a model of a concrete border fence for the U.S. border with Mexico. He said that the United States should electrify the wire with a current that couldn’t kill, but could hurt people. “It would simply be a discouragement for them to be fooling around with it,” King said. “We do that with livestock all the time.”
2. That time King defended racial profiling as “common sense.”
After Arizona enacted an anti-immigration law in 2010 known as SB1070, which would allow law enforcement officials to racially profile suspected undocumented immigrants, King defended the policy. He said it was a “common sense thing” for law enforcement to use “indicators” like “what kind of clothes people wear, what kind of shoes people wear, what kind of accents they have, the type of grooming they might have… sometimes it’s just a sixth sense that they can’t put their fingers on.”

3. That time King compared immigrants to dogs.
During an event in 2012, King said that the United States should pick the best immigrants in much the same way that people choose the “pick of the litter” when it comes to choosing dogs.
“You want a good bird dog?” he said. “You want one that’s going to be aggressive? Pick the one that’s the friskiest … not the one that’s over there sleeping in the corner.”
He added, “You get the pick of the litter and you got yourself a pretty good bird dog. Well, we’ve got the pick of every donor civilization on the planet. We’ve got the vigor from the planet to come to America.”
4. That time King said that undocumented immigrants coming across the border have “cantaloupe calves” because they are “drug mules.”
During an interview with NewsMax in 2013, King claimed that in addition to undocumented immigrants who were brought into the country as young children, there were also “drug mules” coming across the border with “calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”
5. That time King said Latinos come from a “violent civilization.”
During a Tea Party rally against immigration reform in 2013, King said that bringing “people from a violent civilization into a less-violent civilization” would beget “more violence.”
6. That time King said that he was just “as Hispanic and Latino” as a Latino congressman.
When United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro went on MSNBC last year to say that the Republican party would need Latino voters to win the election in 2016, King tweeted, “What does Julian Castro know? Does he know that I’m as Hispanic and Latino as he?”

en things you should know about Marco Rubio:
  1. He says everyone should own a gun to protect themselves from criminals and terrorists, and would shut down "any place where radicals are being inspired."

  2. He denies human beings are responsible for climate change.

  3. His tax plan gives the top 1 percent over $200,000 in tax cuts per year, and would completely eliminate taxes on capital gains. That’s more than Jeb Bush’s proposed tax cuts for the rich, and about on par with Donald Trump’s.

  4. He wants to freeze federal spending at 2008 levels for everything except defense.

  5. He wants a permanent U.S. presence in Iraq, and would end the nuclear deal with Iran.

  6. He wants to repeal Obamacare.

  7. We have no way to know where he is on immigration because he’s flip-flopped -- first working on legislation to regularize citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and now firmly anti-legalization.

  8. He’s fibbed about his personal history – saying his parents were Cuban exiles although they left Cuba before the revolution.

  9. He’s been careless with official money. When serving in the Florida House he charged personal expenses (including a $130 haircut) to a Republican Party credit card intended for official use.

  10. And although elected to the Senate as a Tea Party favorite, he’s now the establishment’s favorite Republican. Among his top donors are Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo, and hedge-fund billionaire Paul Singer – along with Koch Industries.

Fifteen Years Later: The "Great Success" of Plan Colombia

his February 4, celebrating the “historic collaboration” between the United States and Colombia, current Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos visited the White House to meet with President Barack Obama as they commemorate the fifteen-year anniversary of Plan Colombia.
Signed in 2000 under U.S. President Bill Clinton and Colombian President Andrés Pastrana, Plan Colombia was a $1.3 billion initiative to support the Colombian government’s counterinsurgency and counternarcotics efforts, based upon the U.S. policy of fighting the War on Drugs from a supply side perspective. With 71% of the funds appropriated as military aid – training Colombian troops, supplying military technology and weapons, and supporting a controversial aerial fumigations program to decimate coca crops – the U.S. has given almost $10 billion in aid to Colombia since the implementation of Plan Colombia in 2001.
In addition to celebrating the “overwhelming success” of Plan Colombia, the visit is expected to promote United States support of the ongoing peace negotiations developing between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC by their Spanish acronym) in Havana, Cuba. Beginning in 2012, the accords have touched on six specific issues – land reform, drug trafficking, political participation, victims’ rights, demobilization, and implementation of the accords – and are tentatively slated to finish on March 23, 2016, ending a 52-year conflict between Colombia’s largest guerrilla group and the Colombian state.
In anticipation of the February 4 event, Colombian ambassador to the US Juan Carlos Pinzón statedthat, “In the year 2000, Colombia was a country at the edge of an abyss. In that moment, the United States government began a support plan that [. . .] achieved the transformation of our country and opened the door for a peace process.”
In the same vein, President Obama commented in an interview with prominent Colombian newspaper El Tiempo that “Throughout various administrations, including mine, the United States has become proud of being Colombia’s partner. That includes our close cooperation through Plan Colombia, which has helped the country to make important progress in security, development, and the reestablishment of democracy.”
Yet despite high-level government rhetoric about the success of Plan Colombia, members of civil society and human rights organizations tell a different story – a story of how US military intervention has increased human rights violations, especially among vulnerable populations including Afro-Colombians, indigenous communities, small-scale farmers, women, trade unionists, and human rights defenders.
In an open letter to President Obama, a network of 135 communities known as CONPAZ (Communities Building Peace in the Territories), writes “We have seen how our rights have been violated using the pretext of the armed conflict. We have seen how our territories have been and continue to be militarized and even worse, have seen a rise in presence of paramilitaries [. . .] Evidently Colombia has changed with Plan Colombia [. . . yet] these changes have not necessarily meant the improvement in the quality of life for the majority of Colombians.”
Although the modern armed conflict can be dated back to 1948, human rights violations skyrocketed in the year 2000 with the massive injection of US military aid under Plan Colombia. In fact, since the implementation of Plan Colombia, there have been 6,424,000 Colombians victimized – a staggering percentage of the 7,603, 597 victims total registered by the Colombian state’s National Victim’s Unit since 1958. That is, over 80% of total victims have suffered human rights violations since Plan Colombia began. Moreover, approximately 80% of deaths have been civilian, according to the National Center for Historic Memory.
Analyzing the human rights abuses of Plan Colombia, labor leader Jorge Parra commented that, “Plan Colombia has been a sinister plan between the two governments [the United States and Colombia] against small-scale farmers and the working class. Period. That’s what one sees from the worker’s point of view, from those who have had to experience this situation. Because for the rich of course it’s been marvelous, and it continues to be marvelous. But we haven’t seen it like this. The violence in the countryside has stayed the same. The hunger in the countryside has stayed the same.”
Parra continues, “They don’t invest in education, in healthcare [. . .] They begin to bring us [. . .] glyphosate [. . .] which has left a huge number of children sick, rivers polluted [. . .] Really this doesn’t address the problem which is a social problem, and the only thing they are doing is continuing to feed what the United States wants, which is war.”
In military terms, Plan Colombia could be classified as a great success – state security forces expanded their reach to almost all municipalities in the country, and the FARC’s ranks dropped from 17,000 to an estimated 8,000 fighters. Yet despite this, civil society groups have shown that paramilitary and state security forces built up by military aid through Plan Colombia have been responsible for the majority of human rights violations.
In fact, paramilitaries and state security forces together are estimated to be responsible for almost 48% of assassinations, while approximately 17% were committed by the guerrilla and the others by unknown armed actors or groups. Various scandals including the 2006 “false positives” scandal and the 2006 parapolitics scandal have further implicated state security forces (funded by Plan Colombia and often trained by the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation/School of the Americas) and politicians in massive human rights violations.
One leader from a community called Nilo which is located next to the National Training Center of Tolemaida – the biggest military training base in Colombia – said in an interview with FOR Peace Presence Bogotá that “As a result of Plan Colombia, a lot of farmers have been affected. In the case of Nilo, the farmers have experienced violations of their human rights by the military and the Ministry of Defense, as we had to be confined in our territory. First of all, the military says they need our land for training purposes. Secondly, they say that as all the foreign personnel come to the military fortress Tolemaida to train, they have to provide them more security.”

Like & Share this excellent Washington Post article exposing neo-con GOP Presidential candidate Lindsey Graham's embellishment of his own military record.
From 2006 until the start of this year, Graham’s official biographies stated that he worked as a senior instructor at the Judge Advocate General’s School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala., the training hub for the service’s legal corps. That description has been cited in virtually all news coverage of Graham’s military career.
In fact, Air Force officials said they had no record of Graham teaching any courses on behalf of the school or even visiting it during that period.

While in Congress, the GOP presidential hopeful was promoted twice despite years of little or no work.
