This is how one handles moralizing Bible thumpers (VIDEO)
Jon Stewart did a skit recently that exposed the hypocrisy of Bible thumperslike Mike Huckabee. While his skit was epic and funny, Martin Sheen as President Josiah Bartlet was epic in his excoriation of the biblical hypocrisy of hate spewing Right Wing Evangelical Christians.
President Bartlet (of The West Wing fame), turns this talk show host’s weapon, the Bible, against her. He shows how presenting the truth in an unabashed objective fact based manner can stop perpetrators of hate in their tracks.
Of course they will regroup in an attempt to maintain their modus operandi. After-all, most of those leading and promoting these types of issues are not doing it out of conviction. They are doing it to enrich themselves on the ignorance of those that follow them.
Enlightening the masses that are predisposed to follow them is the antidote. It is the civic duty of those of us who know the truth to put it out without fear. Only then can we start to make a change. This is true for those using the Bible or for those using any type of ideology to harm the masses.
When the Paul Ryans of the world equate middle-class economics to envy economics we must call it out right away. When the John Boehners of the world equate the Affordable Care Act to a government take over, the lie must be called out. When a pipeline bill that creates 35 permanent jobs is called a jobs bill, it must be called out. When the President calls a trade bill like the Trans Pacific Partnership ‘good for the American worker’, he must be called out.
The transfer of the Bible thumping methodology to the political discourse has been successful. Reversal is rather simple as it is built on barren land. We must do our jobs.
Watching this president discuss this ruling from this location served as a striking reminder about the extraordinary circumstances we find ourselves in.
This week’s hero is Justice Anthony Kennedy, whose opinions in three key Supreme Court cases – upholding the Affordable Care Act, ruling that the Fair Housing Act of 1968 bars housing polices having a discriminatory effect regardless of intent, and finding that the Constitution allows gays and lesbians to marry – advanced the cause of social justice in America.
It’s easy to forget this is the same Anthony Kennedy who provided the deciding votes both to gut the Voting Rights Act of 1965, opening the door to voter suppression, and to give corporations a First Amendment right to spend as much on politics as they wish, thereby allowing big money to inundate American politics. Kennedy’s opinions this week, as wise and thoughtful as they are, don’t begin to compensate for the profound damage he and his four Republican brethren on the Court have done to our democracy.
