VoteVets.org : Trump on N. Korea today: "Military solutions are now fully in place"

VoteVets

The threat of military conflict with North Korea is increasing by the day. This morning, President Trump tweeted that “Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely."

But what’s really missing from this conversation — in Congress and in the media — is being bold about not just military solutions, but diplomatic solutions. So earlier this week, we paid for a national, scientific poll on the issue. Here’s what it found:

  • 82% of Americans are afraid that if the U.S. struck North Korea militarily, they would respond by launching nuclear weapons at the U.S.

  • 75% of voters, including 68% of Republicans, want the U.S. to exhaust all diplomatic means to avoid a war. And 86% want direct talks with North Korea.

  • Only 41% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of this issue.
The American people want diplomacy, not an inevitable march to war with a nation that has nuclear capabilities. We are going to lead on this issue. But we can’t do it alone:

When President Trump fired cruise missiles into Syria, members of the media and the same usual suspects in Congress watched in awe and celebration. We desperately need a counter-balance on North Korea, and VoteVets aims to provide it.

US Sends B-1 Strategic Bombers Over South Korea
by Peter Symonds

The US Air Force sent two B-1B Lancer strategic bombers from Guam to the Korean Peninsula on Monday to engage in bilateral training exercises with South Korean and Japanese military forces. The provocative move was taken amid continuing threats by the Trump administration to launch military action against North Korea.

Korean Tensions: Could They Slip Out of Control?
by Rene Wadlow

Today, there are both anticipated and unanticipated dangers. There can also be avenues for cooperation. Leadership is crucial. As with the 1975 Helsinki Conference, Track II leadership may be an important factor in highlighting shared stability concerns and a strengthening of the rules of the game.

National Guard, Pentagon Hold Drills Testing Preparations For Nuclear Attack On The US
by Niles Niemuth

With little public notice, government agencies at the local, state and federal level, in conjunction with the Pentagon, began exercises at the end of last month war gaming the reaction of emergency responders and the military to the detonation of a nuclear bomb in a major American city.

Environmentalist Dr Rosemary Mason has just written an open letter to the professor requesting that he acknowledges genuine independent evidence about the toxic impacts of pesticides – not the studies or data being pushed and prioritised by powerful transnational corporations – and breaks the silence over the devastation being caused.

I’d Rather Be ‘Intellectual’ Than Stupid
by Pratap Antony

Politicians, once they come to power, blame ‘intellectuals’ and ‘liberals’ for slowing down their bid for absolute control and power over all of us citizens. Politicians use the words ‘Intellectual’ and ‘liberal’ to malign, belittle and disparage social thinkers and independent minded social commentators who differ and disagree with them.

Aren’t Rohingyas Bengalis, And Arakan Integral To Bangladesh?
by Taj Hashmi

The Bangladesh Government has taken two absurd decisions: firstly, it has virtually refused to grant refugee status to the Rohingyas on the flimsy ground of “over-population”; and secondly, it has proposed to “settle” Rohingya refugees at Thengar Char, a remote, marshy, and uninhabitable island, more than 37 miles from the mainland of Bangladesh, which is often submerged in water. “This is a terrible and crazy idea … it would be like sending thousands of people to exile rather than calling it relocation,” a Bangladeshi government official told CNN recently, and he didn’t want to be named because he feared reprisals.

Forced Removal From United Airlines
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

Brusque, indifferent, and generally rude, it came as little surprise that violence also featured in an incident that has lit up the internet with a deservedly wicked fire.  Central to the story was Dr David Dao, a 69-year-old who claimed he was being singled out on Sunday’s United Express Flight 3411 in Chicago because he was Chinese.

Common Decency: The Voight-Kampff Test
by Alan Grayson

United Airlines and its CEO, Oscar Munoz, just failed the Voight-Kampff Test. In case you haven’t seen the lather-rinse-repeat loop playing and replaying on CNN, on an overbooked flight from Chicago to Louisville, United Airlines arbitrarily picked out a passenger who had already boarded — a doctor who told them that he needed to return to his duties at his hospital at home — and sent in its security staff to beat him and drag him, unconscious, down the aisle and off the plane.  The doctor then found his way back on the plane, blood streaming down his face, mumbling over and over again, “just kill me, just kill me.”

Proven US Alliance Lying Over Chemical Weapons Attack & Trump Pretext For Destruction Of Syria
by Dr Gideon Polya

The Russian and Syrian denials are true if they are innocent and lies if they are guilty of the suspected  chemical weapons attack that killed 90 people including 30 children in Syria. However Trump, US and US Alliance certitude over Russian and Syrian guilt is clear, proven, warmongering lying in the absence of findings from expert and independent investigators. Meanwhile a mass murdering, child-killing Trump continues to make endless war  on famine-wracked Somalia and Yemen where half of the starving populations of 11.2 million and 27.9 million, respectively, are children.

The Silver Lining of Trump’s Ownership of Regime Change Policy in Syria
by Nauman Sadiq

On a positive note, it has been a good development that the Trump administration has owned the “regime change” policy of the Obama administration in Syria by launching cruise missiles strike against the Syrian air force in al-Shayrat air base. Because over the decades, it has been a convenient stratagem of the Western powers with two-party political systems, particularly the US, to evade responsibility for the death and destruction brought on the hapless Middle Eastern countries by their predecessors after the elections.

Reactive Mismeasures: The New Yorker And The “New” Cold War Propaganda (Part 1)
by Thomas Riggins

This  is the first part (of 5 ) of a paragraph by paragraph commentary on a recent article posing as journalism in the March 6, 2017 issue of The New Yorker. I hope to demonstrate that this article is basically a totally mendacious concoction of cold war US propaganda constructed out of unsubstantiated opinions expressed by US government officials and various journalists and others who are hostile to the current Russian government

CounterCurrents: Why EROEI Matters: The Role Of Net Energy In The Survival Of Civilization, Obama’s Ukrainian Coup Caused 2.5 Million Ukrainian Refugees Into Russia

Dear Friend,

The Trump administration has further exacerbated the extremely tense standoff on the Korean Peninsula by dispatching attack drones to South Korea and sending special forces units to participate in massive war games already underway. The military build-up takes place as the White House considers launching strikes on North Korean nuclear and military sites.

Just a year after the shocking suicide of dalit scholar Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad Central University, another dalit scholar from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Muthu Krishnan (28) committed suicide in a friend’s home. He was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his friend’s house in the national capital on Monday. Muthu Krishnan had been at the forefront of the movement for justice for Rohith Vemula.

A lively debate is ongoing on what should be the minimum energy return for energy invested (EROEI) in order to sustain a civilization. Clearly, one always wants the best returns for one’s investments. And, of course, investing in something that provides a return smaller than the investment is a bad idea. So, a civilization grows and prosper on the net energy it receives, that is the energy produced minus the energy required to sustain production. The question is whether the transition from fossil fuels to renewables could provide enough energy to keep civilization alive in a form not too different from the present one.

Dakota Pipeline: The Best Way Forward!
by Sally Dugman

Yet we, some of us, trek onward to minimally curtail the gargantuan ravage. What other path to take for people like you and me in light of our common values? Afghanistan: Notes From A Broken Land
by Andre Vltchek

http://www.countercurrents.org/2017/03/14/afghanistan-notes-from-a-broken-land/

Afghanistan has been gradually overtaken by something absolutely foreign: by the Western-style security apparatus. Tens of thousands of highly paid North American and European ‘experts’ have been getting extremely busy, fulfilling their secret wet dream: fencing everything in sight, monitoring each and every movement in the capital city, building taller and taller barriers, while installing the latest hi-tech cameras at almost every intersection, and above each gate.

Parallels Between Syrian Civil War And Soviet-Afghan Jihad
by Nauman Sadiq

http://www.countercurrents.org/2017/03/14/parallels-between-syrian-civil-war-and-soviet-afghan-jihad/

If we were to draw parallels between the Soviet-Afghan jihad of the ‘80s and the Syrian civil war of today, the Western powers used the training camps located in the Af-Pak border regions to train and arm the Afghan Mujahideen against the Soviet troops in Afghanistan with the help of Pakistan’s intelligence agencies.

WikiLeaks, “Year Zero” And The CIA Hacking Files
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

http://www.countercurrents.org/2017/03/14/wikileaks-year-zero-and-the-cia-hacking-files/

The paradox with information releases that expose a supposedly grand internal stratagem is that they merely provide the food of confirmation otherwise lacking.  Such food is potent.  It blows the lid off the suggestion that a conspiracy theorist was merely a Cassandra in the wilderness chewing fingernails in fear that something hideous was afoot. It provides nutrients for those seeking greater scrutiny over the way state security, otherwise deemed the domain of closeted experts, is policed.

Allowing Child Marriage: Another Regression Therapy For Bangladesh!
by Taj Hashmi

A recent move by the Government to allow child marriage is tantamount to excluding many Bangladeshis from the benefits of growth and development. Women are likely to become the main victims of the recently enacted Child Marriage Restraint Act-2017

In India Any Social Activist Can Be Arrested, Charged And Tried – Sans Evidence – For Terrorism: Kobad Ghandy’s Case
Co-Written by Dr. P.S. Sahni & Shobha Aggarwal

In 2009, the Government of India announced a new nation-wide initiative viz. “Integrated Action Plan” (IAP) for broad coordinated operations to deal with the ‘Naxalite’ problem. This plan included increased funding for special police for better containment and reduction of Naxalite influence. Kobad Ghandy’s arrest in September 2009 was a direct fall out of this IAP.

Is There Any Justice Possible For Workers In India?
by Press Release

http://www.countercurrents.org/2017/03/14/is-there-any-justice-possible-for-workers-in-india/

We have been handed an anti-worker political verdict in the Maruti Suzuki workers case going on since July 2012. This is Judgment is ‘class justice’, clearly on the side of the multinational companies. It is not only against the workers directly involved in struggle for Trade Union Rights and the 2500 working class families of Maruti Suzuki facing exploitation-repression all these years, but the entire working class in India
