House GOP Focused On Suing President Obama Instead Of Solving Our Country’s Problems

angryjb

With just two days left before Congress heads out for the month long August recess, House Republicans are busy. Not raising the minimum wage or ensuring equal pay for equal work; not investing in an infrastructure for the 21st century; not preventing corporations from moving their addresses overseas in order to dodge paying their fair share of taxes. Instead, they are focused on authorizing a lawsuit against President Obama.

Like the House GOP’s 50-plus votes to repeal or dismantle the Affordable Care Act, this lawsuit is a political stunt to appeal to the far right wing of their party. Like the millions of dollars they have spent investigating and re-investigating Benghazi, it is a waste of taxpayer money.

And you don’t need to take our word for it. The Editorial Board of USA Today concluded that “a fair-minded look at the suit’s merits suggests it’s really more of a political grudge match.” And Candice Miller (R-MI), the member of Congress overseeing the lawsuit, admitted that “we don’t know yet” how much the stunt will cost taxpayers.

Another House Republican, Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC), has come out against the lawsuit and in the process revealed what could be the second act of this sideshow: impeachment. Calling the lawsuit “theater,” Jones asked, “Why not impeach instead of wasting $1 million to $2 million of the taxpayers’ money? … If you’re serious about this, use what the founders of the Constitution gave us.”

It’s not as if there is nothing else going on for these House Republicans to focus on. Unless action is taken before August, there will be a construction shutdown as the Highway Trust Fund runs out of funding, putting thousands of construction projects up to 700,000 jobs at risk. The House and Senate have been ping-ponging different versions of a short-term fix back and forth because the House GOP refuses to develop a long-term solution that invests in our nation’s infrastructure and keeps America working.

And earlier today, Senate Republicans blocked a bill to close the “corporate desertion” tax loophole. The loophole allows corporations that earn most of their money in America to renounce their corporate citizenship by moving their address to a tax haven and avoid paying U.S. tax obligations.

In spite of these and many other issues that need to be addressed, the House GOP priority lies with suing the President. Meanwhile, President Obama doesn’t appear too threatened: “Stop being mad all the time,” he said of Republicans at an event today, chuckling. “Stop just hatin’ all the time. Let’s get some work done.”

BOTTOM LINE: Instead of doing their job to help millions of Americans, the House GOP is focused on another political stunt to sue President Obama that will likely cost millions in taxpayer dollars. At the same time, deadlines loom and if Congress doesn’t act it will deal the economy a self-inflected wound at just the wrong time.

Center for EFFECTIVE GOVERMENT: Fiscal Insight: Defense Spending in 8 Charts; 2.8 Million Americans Left Behind

May 27, 2014
Fiscal Insight: A biweekly round up of some of our analyses

While the monthly jobs numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate official unemployment is gradually falling, there were still 9.8 million Americans out of work in April, of which 3.5 million were unemployed for 27 weeks or more. Americans are still hurting, and Congress needs to take action immediately.

On May 7, the House Armed Services Committee unanimously approved $496 billion in discretionary spending and $79.4 billion in war operations spending for the budget that starts Oct. 1. We explore how this stacks up against the rest of the world, who benefits most from defense spending, and what these funding levels mean for other national priorities.

Close Loopholes, Fix Potholes
Fixing our crumbling infrastructure would create jobs. It would also save money in the future because as the condition of our infrastructure worsens, the cost to repair it only grows. But instead, we’ve reduced the amount of money available for infrastructure repairs.

BRILLIANT VIDEO: Mention "wolves" and some people react to it like they would plague-infested vermin: exterminate them at all cost. But this amazing video shows how the reintroduction of wolves literally helped restore an ailing Yellowstone back to life, benefiting everything from beavers to grizzly bears.

It's a dramatic reminder that all creatures--including humans--are linked to each other, and what we do to our natural world, we do to ourselves. You can learn more about the need to protect endangered species here >> http://ow.ly/tQhom

BREAKING: UAW appeals outside interference in union representation election for Chattanooga Volkswagen workers
    ~ via UAW

The UAW filed an appeal with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) today related to the interference by politicians and outside special interest groups in the union representation election held last week at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant.
    ...
A firestorm of interference from politicians and special interest groups threatening the economic future of the plant occurred just before and during three days of voting in an election supervised by the NLRB. Workers voted narrowly to reject representation, with a slim 44 vote swing. The objections detail a coordinated and widely publicized coercive campaign conducted by politicians and outside organizations to deprive Volkswagen workers of their federally protected right to join a union.

The campaign included publicly-announced and widely disseminated threats by elected officials that state-financed incentives would be withheld if workers exercised their protected right to form a union.

“It’s essentially saying, ‘If you unionize, it’s going to hurt your economy. Why? Because I’m going to make sure it does,’” said Volkswagen worker Lauren Feinauer. “I hope people see it for the underhanded threat that it is.”

The campaign also included threats by U.S. Sen. Bob Corker related to promises of a new product line awarded to the plant if workers voted against UAW representation.

The objections state, “Senator Corker’s conduct was shameful and undertaken with utter disregard for the rights of the citizens of Tennessee and surrounding states that work at Volkswagen. … The clear message of the campaign was that voting for the union would result in stagnation for the Chattanooga plant, with no new product, no job security, and withholding of state support for its expansion.”

“It’s an outrage that politically motivated third parties threatened the economic future of this facility and the opportunity for workers to create a successful operating model that that would grow jobs in Tennessee,” said UAW President Bob King. “It is extraordinary interference in the private decision of workers to have a U.S. senator, a governor and leaders of the state legislature threaten the company with the denial of economic incentives and workers with a loss of product. We’re committed to standing with the Volkswagen workers to ensure that their right to have a fair vote without coercion and interference is protected.”

An affirmative vote for union representation at the Volkswagen plant would have led to the establishment of a works council that would have been the first such model of labor-management relations in the United States.

The NLRB will investigate the election conduct and determine whether there are grounds to set aside the election results and hold a new election for Volkswagen workers.

DUMPED AT THE CAT HOUSE ON THE KINGS ~ We hate seeing boxes outside our property, since it usually means someone's chosen to break the law and abandon animals out in the cold. Today, it was a shivering mom dog and her four puppies. Of course we've taken them in and we're ensuring that they are warm, dry and well fed. And when the time comes, we'll make sure everyone is spayed and neutered and placed for adoption. This is our THIRD litter of dumped puppies in the last few months, and we could use some donations to help. To donate cash, click here to donate: http://www.cathouseonthekings.com/contribute.php. MEET THE MOTHER OF A PET STORE PUPPY

My name is 109. I have lived in a puppy mill for 6.5 years. I have had 11 litters of puppies and made my owner over $30,000.

To show his gratitude, he has never bathed or brushed me....he has never placed a kind hand on me. I have never seen a vet or felt grass under my feet.

The only time I am out of my 2x3 crate is when I am bred by force. I get a little more food and a cleaner pen when I have my babies. I am happy for awhile, but by 4 weeks they take my pups away to sell them online and at pet stores and I am alone again back in my crate.

The wire floor in my crate has caused me to have permanent deep painful groves in my pads. My nails are so long I can't walk on a hard surface.

Today, we were rescued. I am so scared, but I experienced something I have never heard before.....a soft, gentle voice.

Please share to help spread the word & raise awareness about puppy mills!
