Deny, deny, deny

Massachusetts is truly blessed with 2 great and courageous Senators who stand tall and speak out against vested interests even as the Dirty Energy Koch Brothers have funded Climate Change Deniers and Dirty Coal pretends it's clean.

Please consider supporting great candidates who speak for you, ALL Americans and our Global Future this election.

Republicans seem to have one policy toward climate change: Deny.

Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that our climate is warming and that human activity is responsible. July was the hottest month ever recorded for the globe. Record droughts in California are likely being made worse by human emissions.

Instead of taking steps to address the problems, all Republicans want to do is deny.

Denying something won’t make it go away. Republicans can bring all the snowballs they want to the Senate floor as proof climate change isn’t happening (yes, they really did that), but that won’t change the fact that climate change is happening.

This month, we’re going to do something Republicans can’t deny -- we’re going to raise $8,000 to show this network’s commitment to taking action against climate change. Can you make a contribution right now?

If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

The President has come out in support of bold action to mitigate the effects human activity has on our environment. The Pope himself has called for action.

Our planet has a fever. It’s far past time we administered some aid and preventive care like deploying more wind and solar power.

Help push for action to reduce the effects of climate change with a $5 or $10 contribution toward our $8,000 goal.

As the co-author of the only comprehensive piece of climate change legislation ever to pass a chamber of Congress, I am committed to seeing this fight to the end.

Thank you for standing with me.

"The science is unmistakable."

Thank you for contacting me about the Green Climate Fund.
The science is unmistakable. Human activities are releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and contributing to climate change. Climate change endangers our health and security, it threatens agricultural production and access to clean water, and it risks floods and droughts.
The Green Climate Fund is a multilateral effort to help countries reduce carbon pollution and adapt to the effects of climate change. The Obama Administration has pledged to contribute $3 billion to the fund, and they have requested $500 million for the fund in its FY 2016 budget as part of that pledge. Although these funds have yet to be appropriated, I support efforts to work with the international community to address climate change, and I will keep your thoughts in mind as I work with my colleagues on this issue.
I appreciate your reaching out to me, and I hope you contact me again in the future about issues of importance to you.
Sincerely,

WATCH THIS! WAVE ENERGY

This is a fascinating consideration for CLEAN ENERGY!

[Jetson Daily] New Method of Harvesting Wave Energy

Posted: 26 Dec 2014 12:19 PM PST
sea
For towns and cities in coastal areas, harvesting wave energy makes a lot of sense. The company Albatern from Scotland recently came out with a unique solution for easy and affordable way to do just that. The so-called WaveNET is a modular and scalable array of floating generator units. These units, also referred to as “Squids”, are capable of harvesting wave energy via their buoyant arms that can follow the motion of the waves very precisely.

closep
Up to three Squids can be linked one to another, which creates a floating energy harvesting grid that is flexible in all directions. The efficiency of this grid depends on how big it is, and how many different wave movements it can harness for energy production. Albatern’s goal is to install a 1.25 kilometer-long floating energy farm by 2024.
connectedsquids
A Squid unit is made up of a central ballast pole, which holds up three buoyant floats connected to the central post with linking arms. These arms are connected to the central post through a fully articulating pump unit at each end. This means that any movement of the arms caused by the waves creates hydraulic energy through the pumps.
pump
The units use a standard hydrostatic transmission system to gather the generated hydraulic energy at a central point, and convert it into electrical energy through a “power take-off” module, from where the generated electricity can be transmitted to shore.
Albatern is currently testing their WaveNET technology just off the Scottish coast with a 20-foot tall central ballast pole, with a generating capacity of 7.5 kW. They are also planning on testing a 40-foot version soon, which has a generating capacity of 75 kW. Lastly they will install a giant 80-foot Squid with a generating capacity of 750 kW.
capacity
The immediate market for this technolgy are oil rigs and aquaculture companies, as well as remote villages that are close to the sea. However, once Albatern finishes their planned expansion they will be able to engage in larger, grid scale operations.

The State of U.S. Renewable Energy in Massachusetts

The Clean Power Plan sets different goals for each state to reduce its carbon emissions by 2030. As one pathway to meet those goals, the EPA suggests a renewable energy target for each state. However, many of the states are already on track to meet or even exceed those renewable aims. See how your state stacks up on the road to a cleaner energy future. And take action to strengthen the Clean Power Plan by demanding more ambitious renewable energy growth.

A Dire Warning on Global Warming

Your VOTE on Tuesday, Nov. 4th will impact the future of our nation and our planet.

Please make an informed decision and vote for candidates willing to address Global Warming!  It matters!

Bernie Buzz Update

Tell Bernie: What issues interest you most?

A Dire Warning on Global Warming

The loudest alarm ever over global warming was sounded on Sunday by an international team of scientists. Climate change caused by burning fossil fuels has accelerated to the point that the only chance of keeping the world’s temperature below a dangerous level may be to end all greenhouse gas emissions by the end of this century, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said. The report issued in Copenhagen said climate change already is affecting life on every continent and in rising oceans.

"Science has spoken. There is no ambiguity in their message. Leaders must act. Time is not on our side," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said.

“The scientific community across the world is sounding the alarm. Climate change is real and it will have devastating consequences around the globe unless we act boldly and decisively,” said Sen. Bernie Sanders, a member of the Senate environment and energy committees.

Sanders has proposed a fee on carbon and methane emissions. The measure is cosponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer, chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. Their bill would help create millions of jobs transforming the U.S. energy system away from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal and biomass. Another Sanders bill would end tax breaks and subsidies for oil and coal companies. A companion measure in the House is sponsored by Rep. Keith Ellison.

Both ideas are backed by scientists and leading economists but blocked by Republicans in Congress. “Many Republicans now respond to the crisis of climate change by saying they are not scientists and therefore have no opinion,” Sanders said. “Well, most of them are not doctors but they respect doctors’ opinions on cancer and heart disease. Most of them are not generals but they respect the opinions of our military leaders. It’s time for them to respect the views of the scientific community on climate change.”

EU reacts to Obama's Clean Power Plan

The U.S. can and should lead the world in reducing global warming impacts, increasing energy efficiency and renewable energy!

EU reacts to Obama's Clean Power Plan

After the US EPA announced their plan to cut US power plant emissions 30% by 2030, the European Union (EU) reacts, praising the Emission Performance Standard (EPS) for its vision while serving as a "positive signal" to other countries.

''This proposed rule is the strongest action ever taken by the U.S. government to fight climate change," the EU's climate action commissioner, Connie Hedegaard said in a reaction statement. "If implemented as planned, this measure will help the country meet its 2020 emissions target."

2020 emissions targets refer to reductions previously committed to by Obama which are well below the Kyoto Protocol commitments.

Hedegaard saw hope in Obama's announcement for next year's Paris summit which is intended to finalize a successor to the Kyoto deal which expired in 2012. "But for Paris to deliver what is needed to stay below a 2°C increase in global temperature, all countries, including the United States, must do even more than what this reduction trajectory indicates," she said.

The new plan will cap greenhouse gas emissions from 1600 US power stations, even though 600 of them are powered by coal and around half may have difficulty meeting the new standard.

As well as cutting CO2 emissions, the new EPS anticipates a 1.5% annual increase in energy efficiency, and a reduction in particle, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen pollution by more than 25%, according to the US EPA.

The EPA also expects the new rule to cut electricity bills by 8% and avert as many as 6,600 premature deaths, 150,000 asthma attacks in children, and up to 490,000 missed work or school days, saving some $93 billion in the process.

Many European green groups though were energized Obama's move, with 11 heavy-hitters including Greenpeace, WWF Europe and Birdlife putting out a statement calling for reciprocal EU action.

"Europe has long claimed leadership on climate action, but has seen rising emissions from coal power stations due to the low CO2 price and cheaper coal imports," it says. "This is a threat to both Europe's delivery of domestic decarbonisation and to its international influence."

Let's breath some fresh air....

Please add your name....

The Climate Reality Project VISIT CLIMATEREALITYPROJECT.ORG

Just moments ago, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy announced the first-ever safeguards limiting carbon pollution from existing U.S. power plants.

Our science and solutions team has begun to comb through this lengthy proposed rule, but what we know right now is simple: this groundbreaking regulation is an important step towards addressing our single largest source of carbon pollution, existing power plants, and will help lead the U.S. towards a cost-effective renewable future. We all want a healthy and sustainable future, not one characterized by rapidly rising asthma rates and other public health issues caused by climate change.

The real work starts now. Earlier this year, thousands of Climate Reality members sent a comment in support of the EPA's carbon standards for new power plants -- setting a direction for the future. Now, we need your help to address current pollution levels, which are actively changing our climate.

Even before these safeguards were released, Big Polluters were already using fear mongering and doomsday scare tactics to mislead us about the impact this proposed rule will have. That's why it's so important for you to send the EPA a comment in support of this rule right now.

This won't be the last you hear from us about this -- as more information is released, we'll keep you updated.

Sincerely,
The Climate Reality Team

Senator Bernie Sanders: Earth Day

Bernie Buzz Update

Take the poll: Do you favor setting stricter emission limits on power plants?

Earth Day

Earth Day is a reminder that dramatic action is needed to curb the carbon and methane emissions responsible for the planetary crisis of global warming. Sen. Bernie Sanders cited a warning this month by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, made up of the world’s leading climate scientists, which reported that emissions of greenhouse gases have gone up nearly twice as fast so far in the 21st century as they did in the last decades of the 20th century.

Bernie is the chief sponsor of legislation, cosponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer, to put a fee on carbon and methane emissions. Their measure would help create millions of jobs as we transform our energy system away from fossil fuel and into energy efficiency and sustainable energies such as wind, solar, geothermal and biomass. Bernie also has proposed legislation to end subsidies for oil and gas companies.

"Unless we take bold action to reverse climate change, our children and grandchildren are going to look back on this period in history and ask a very simple question: ‘Where were they? Why didn’t the United States of America lead the international community in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and preventing the devastating damage that the scientific community was sure would come?’"

Skewed Priorities

The Koch brothers, whose more than $50 billion of wealth -- made largely from their petrochemical businesses -- exceeds that of the bottom 45 percent of Americans put together, and who make enough money every second to feed a homeless American for an entire year, are pouring ever more of their money into politics. Their goal is to shrink government, cut environmental regulations, and reduce taxes on the wealthy – thereby making themselves even wealthier and more powerful. The...ir political front, Americans for Prosperity, has already spent more than $30 million on the 2014 midterms, up to 10 times as much as any major outside Democratic group, according to the New York Times. They’re building their own permanent political machine, including more than 200 full-time paid staff in 32 states.

The Koch brothers shouldn’t be demonized because they have a humongous amount of money, or because most of it has been made in petrochemicals, or because of their right-wing views. As long as they’ve obeyed the law and played by the rules, they’re entitled to their money and their opinions. But in using their vast wealth to alter those laws and rules, they are corrupting our democracy. For this they deserve to be widely denounced.

What do you suggest?

Heat and Eat:

Vermont and other states have figured out a way to help some seniors and families with children avoid freezing or starving this winter. Under a so-called “Heat and Eat” provision in the food stamps program, a household is entitled to more food aid if it also is enrolled in the federally-funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps people pay their utility bills. Some states were making only token payments to families for home heating assistanc...e to help them qualify for food stamps. The farm bill that Congress passed in February said states would have to pay at least $20 a year in fuel aid to prompt the food stamp benefits. Republicans assumed that states wouldn’t want to pay the extra $20 and projected that the new farm bill would result in $8.6 billion in food stamp cuts over the next decade. They were wrong.See More

The Supreme Court has directed union and state governments to constitute a Civil Services Board (CSB) to manage transfers, postings, promotions, etc., of civil servants, to insulate bureaucracy from interference by politicians. This welcome direction is based upon a PIL, which seeks to minimize if not eliminate one aspect of political corruption in governance that impinges upon effective delivery of services to the people. In view of the judiciary having to step in to issue a directive that implicitly speaks of failure of the political executive and legislators, it is well to take a close look at governance and its bases. Further, since governance is by people and is supposed to be for people, the individual and instutional aspects of corruption and vigilance that affect governance need to be examined
