Save A Life!

Who is light as a feather, cute as a button, and ready to be your long-time companion?

Today's Five O'Clock Cuteness is Feather, a tiny Papillon pup available for adoption in Peralta, New Mexico. Feather is a little lady, as her name implies. She weighs a mere 6 pounds, but what she lacks in physical stature she makes up for with her big personality. She's very social and gets along very well with other dogs and would probably be great with school-age children. She hasn't yet met any cats, but her rescuers think she'd probably be fine with them as well. When she's not playing with others, this girl can be found snuggling up in a nice warm lap or giving sweet kisses. For more on Feather, please visit her Adopt-a-Pet.com profile: http://bit.ly/1eQJQ04

Thanks, Purina, for helping pets like Feather find true love!

Jubilee's Broken Heart

Read heartfelt stories of rescue, and share your rescued animal stories with others.

On a whim, my daughter and I stopped by a kill shelter to walk through the kitty room on a Tuesday Morning. We walked into the shelter and it was there we met Jubilee. She was a medium hair calico who couldn't get enough attention! She was sweet and in deperate need of a good brushing. We found out she was 2 1/2 and had 7 days left before her time was up. Many people had looked at her, but no one had decided she was the right fit. She was a stray, but she was declawed and had obviously once had a home. She was afraid of quick foot movements and it seemed she had been kicked before. We looked at two other cats, but we were already sold. We were told we had to wait until Friday to verify that she had been spayed at the vet and then we could pick her up!

We visited the shelter Weds and Thurs so she would get some time out of her cage. Every visit she cried when we left, wondering why we were leaving her again. When we finally went to pick her up on Friday, the staff met us with sad faces. Jubilee had a grade three heart murmer and to most people, that meant she was flawed and unadoptable. Had they known, they would have euthanized her and now they didn't think we would want her. We firmly told the staff we were ready to take our kitty home, heart murmer and all. The vet advised us that it could be benign or it could cause her problems. Either way, there is no chance we could afford open heart surgery for her. But our second chance kitty has a wonderful heart, murmer and all, and she is one of the best decisions we ever made. She brings us light and joy everyday and thankfully, the heart murmer seems to have no effect on our sweet girl. We kept her shelter given name, Jubilee, because it seemed so fitting for her. She is truly jubiliant!

This little Scamp may steal your heart

This little Scamp may steal your heart

7-year-old sweetheart is good with other cats, kids and dogs

Lovable and lovely Scamp! People for Cats photo.
Lovable and lovely Scamp! People for Cats photo.

Scamp is a large 7-year-old mostly white calico domestic short hair female, with a cute tiger striped tail. She is a very affectionate kitty who came to us because her previous owner moved to a nursing home. This pretty girl is a friendly lap cat who absolutely loves people.

Actually, she is quite shameless in vying for her fair share of attention, and frequently throws herself down in front of visitors so that she can get lots of belly rubs and other perks. Her only flaw is that she is a bit chubby and could stand to lose a little weight. In every other way Scamp is a perfect kitty.
She is fine with other cats and is comfortable being around dogs and children. She would make a loving companion for just about any family.

If you would like to visit with this sweetheart, or one of our other equally charming kitties, come in to the shelter at 44 Beagle Lane in Teaticket. We are open to the public on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or call our hotline for an appointment. Hotline: 508-540-5654.

Kesha becomes a hero!

Family dog saves toddler put in drum barrel full of water by armed robbers

Kesha the dog became the family hero after helping her guardian find her one-year-old daughter who had been placed in a drum with water during a robbery in Cuiabá, Brazil.

According to G1, armed robbers snatched the baby from her mother's arms after the girl began crying on Tuesday night.

Angered by the baby's crying, the thieves allegedly tried to drown the child in a drum barrel filled with water. The assailants fled without stealing anything. As the mother frantically tried to find her baby, Kesha lead her directly to the drum where her child was trapped inside.

The mother said that she was returning from church with her daughter in a stroller when she saw two men at the door of her home. They were armed and demanded to be let inside. When her daughter began crying she moved to pick her up, but one of the robbers grabbed the baby from her and took her out of the room while the other suspect locked the mother in a room.

The robbers ransacked the cupboards and wardrobes, but then fled. However, before leaving the home, the robbers apparently went to the bottom part of the house, where there was a drum of about 100 litres, which was full of water. The robbers appear to have attempted to muffle the sounds of the toddler’s crying by placing her inside the drum.

The girl's mother immediately went in search of her daughter. The baby's grandfather said it was the dog who saved his granddaughter's life by leading his daughter to where she was trapped and submerged in the drum. He said, "The dog was our salvation because my daughter thought [the robbers] had taken her [the baby] because she stopped crying, but then Kesha went crazy," he said.

"My daughter went to the front of the house and saw only the bad guys running away and heard no more crying," the grandfather explained. "Meanwhile, the dog was desperate, barking at my daughter.

She ran to the drum and began to scratch it and then would come back to bark at her [his daughter]."

The one-year-old was freed and is doing well.

G1 reported that Military Police are investigating the matter. Lieutenant Colonel of Police, Paul Serbija said, "There was an attempted burglary that turned into an attempted murder of a minor. It's really unusual in the capital [Mato Grosso]." As no items of value were stolen, police suspect something must have frightened the armed intruders off before they could steal anything.

The baby's mother could not identify any of the suspects. Police still have no information about the identity of the assailants.
