NRA to Tepco: Control massive amount of radioactive water
gushing from Fukushima No. 1 04 Oct 2013
The Nuclear Regulation Authority on Friday ordered Tokyo Electric Power Co. to
bring under control the massive amount of radioactive water gushing from the
Fukushima No. 1 nuclear complex, including by boosting worker numbers on-site.
Summoning Tepco President Naomi Hirose after a series of recent spills at the
crippled power plant, Katsuhiko Ikeda, head of the NRA secretariat, tore into
the utility for "rudimentary mistakes" that caused the toxic water problem and
said its management in the field was "significantly deteriorating." With
concerns growing over the toxic water problem at Fukushima No. 1, Ikeda also
urged Tepco to report whether it can ensure the safety of its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa
atomic plant in Niigata Prefecture, two of whose seven reactors the
utility seeks to
restart.
Water spills from Fukushima
6,700 times more radioactive than legal limit 03 Oct 2013 Japan's
crippled Fukushima nuclear plant has suffered yet another leak, spilling out 430
liters of contaminated water thousands of times more radioactive than legal
limits, its operator said Thursday. Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, said
the water which spilled from the storage tanks had radiation readings as high as
200,000 becquerels per liter -- almost 6,700 times higher than the legal limit
of 30 becquerels. TEPCO announced Tuesday that four tons of rainwater
contaminated with low levels of radiation had leaked during an operation to
transfer water between holding tanks, Reuters reported.
Fukushima worker
accidentally switches off cooling pumps, backup kicks
in
07 Oct 2013 The operator of Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant said on
Monday that pumps used to inject water to cool damaged reactors were hit by a
power failure, but a backup system kicked in immediately. The Nuclear Regulation
Authority said a worker conducting system inspections mistakenly pushed a button
turning off power to some of the systems in the four reactor buildings at the
Fukushima plant.
