2 pedestrians struck as car careens into Md. bus stop

KENSINGTON, Md. (WJLA) - Two people were struck and injured by a careening car as they stood at a 'Ride On' bus stop in Kensington on Saturday morning, authorities said.
INITIAL SPECULATION TURNS TO LIKELY? :
Montgomery County police initially thought it might be a case of DUI, but later determined the man driving likely suffered a seizure or other medical emergency.
The accident occurred around 9:20 a.m. on Connecticut Avenue near Howard Avenue. One of the pedestrians, an 18-year-old woman, was pinned under the light green Toyota Prius and had to be freed by firefighters.
"I think there were three people, two of them jumped [out of the way], the lady I guess was too late," Javier Ruiz, an auto mechanic at a nearby Shell gas station said. "Once they started pulling her off, she started screaming like crazy. It was pretty graphic."
Ruiz documented the aftermath and urgent rescue with his smart phone. The bus shelter, which included large glass panes and a black metal bench, was obliterated when the Prius became an unguided 3,000 pound bullet.
"It's around four pieces in one spot," one bus rider remarked upon seeing a cluster of quarters on the sidewalk. "They must have let the money go, their coins dropped to the ground as the accident was happening."
Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services spokesman Pete Piringer says paramedics took the 18-year-old woman to a local hospital where she underwent surgery for two broken legs. Although the length of her recovery is unclear, Piringer says she is expected to survive.
The other pedestrian who was struck refused treatment at the scene.
The car's driver, a 61-year-old Silver Spring man, was also taken to a hospital and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said he would be ticketed for the accident, but the exact charge was not immediately known.
"You know that feeling you get when you see something horrible? Nothing happened to you, but you're looking at somebody, it's a human being, you know their life is at stake and you're just shaking," Ruiz concluded.
This is the second Montgomery County 'Ride On' bus rider to be hit by an out-of-control car in just as many weeks. On Feb. 18, Vanessa Dixon, 49, was waiting for a bus in the 1000 block of Cresthaven Drive in Silver Spring when she was hit by an SUV; she died a short time later. The vehicle's driver, David Alejandro Rodriguez, 22, of Silver Spring, was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.
