Friends,
For decades, the fossil fuel industry has been using campaign contributions to block climate action. Presidential candidates have a mixed record on fossil fuel money, and Secretary Hillary Clinton is on the fence. She’s willing to support some policies that keep the fossil fuel industry in check, but when we've asked her to refuse campaign contributions from fossil fuel interests, she’s said no.
But there’s another crucial way that the Clinton family is connected to the fossil fuel industry -- and that means there’s another opportunity for Hillary Clinton to distance herself from the industry bent on driving our planet deeper into crisis.
The Clinton Foundation has been taking millions of dollars directly from the fossil fuel industry for years. Today, we’re calling on the Clinton Foundation to divest and cut all ties to fossil fuels.
Right now, climate change is moving much faster than scientific models previously predicted -- ice is melting faster, oceans are rising faster. That means we need to move faster too. Our government and institutions can’t waste time dragging their feet because they’re beholden to special interests. We can’t afford to have the fossil fuel industry tie our politicians’ hands -- not anymore.
If we want a chance at protecting our nation’s coastal cities -- including New York, where this week’s Democratic debate is being held -- then we must keep fossil fuels in the ground. That’s going to take a lot of backbone: a willingness to stand against the fossil fuel industry that’s hell bent on digging them up, and stand with the people demanding the opposite.
Last week, some big news broke: The Clinton Foundation has accepted millions of dollars directly from major fossil fuel companies (including those that lobbied the Clinton-led State Department on tar sands, just before the agency approved the Alberta Clipper pipeline in 2009).1 Exxon, the world’s biggest fracker, contributed $2 million to the Foundation alone (even as Hillary Clinton “sold fracking to the world” as Secretary of State).2
If the Clinton Foundation were to divest, it would send a powerful signal. We’d be one step closer to dismantling the power of an industry that’s blatantly and knowingly wrecking our climate, poisoning our communities, and trampling our democracy.
The climate crisis calls for leaders that are up for the fight of the century -- and absolutely certain about which side must win.
Here we go,
Katie for the 350 Action team
P.S. This video showed just how much the Clinton family hates talking about fossil fuel money. It’s time to change that.
