Progressive Breakfast: Dems Want to Ditch Leaders and Move Left; They’re Right

MORNING MESSAGE

Richard Eskow
Dems Want to Ditch Leaders and Move Left; They’re Right
A new poll shows most Democratic voters want their party to move left, with new people in charge. In other words, they want a political revolution. They've got the right idea.

Mueller Russia Probe Arrests

The ghost of Paul Manafort haunts the White House this Halloween. WaPo:“Unveiling the first batch of criminal allegations to come from probes into possible Russian influence in the American political system, Robert S. Mueller III proved Monday that he is not messing around… You surely know the news by now: Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman, and his longtime business partner, Rick Gates, were charged in a 12-count indictment with conspiracy to launder money, making false statements and other charges in connection with their work advising a Russia-friendly political party in Ukraine. But the biggest bombshell of Monday — the real October Surprise — is that former Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos agreed to a plea deal and admitted to making a false statement to FBI investigators about his contacts with foreigners claiming to have high-level Russian connections.”

Trump Campaign Russia Contacts Disclosed

Trump campaign got early word Russia had Democrats’ emails. NYT:“Court documents revealed that Russian officials alerted the campaign, through an intermediary in April 2016, that they possessed thousands of Democratic emails and other ‘dirt’ on Hillary Clinton. That was two months before the Russian hacking of the [DNC] was publicly revealed and the stolen emails began to appear online. The new court filings provided the first clear evidence that Trump campaign aides had early knowledge that Russia had stolen confidential documents on Mrs. Clinton and the committee… The disclosures added to the evidence pointing to attempts at collaboration between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.”

GOP Tax Plan Offers Zero To Middle Class

Tax cuts – middle class boost or “fake math”?” Reclaim the American Dream:“With debate sharpening over the likely impact of the president’s proposed tax cuts, Trump’s top economist forecasts a boost of $4,000 in annual income for the typical American family but most economists aren’t buying that analysis, and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer derides it as ‘fake math’… Most economists are openly skeptical of the Trump administration’s forecasts of looming wage boosts for the U.S. middle class. ‘The Trump administration’s claim that large wage gains for workers will result from cutting corporations’ taxes is not supported’ by most research, asserts economist Josh Bivens of the pro-labor Economic Policy institute. Three nonpartisan organizations — the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation, the Congressional Budget Office and the Tax Policy Center — all concluded that the main beneficiaries of tax cuts have been corporate shareholders, not workers.”

Gen. Kelly Says “Lack Of Compromise” Caused U.S. Civil War

John Kelly calls Robert E. Lee an ‘honorable man’ and says ‘lack of compromise’ caused the Civil War. Chicago Tribune:“White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly on Monday called Robert E. Lee was ‘an honorable man’ and said that ‘the lack of an ability to compromise’ led to the Civil War, once again thrusting himself into the public spotlight on an emotionally charged issue. The comments, made on the debut night of conservative media host Laura Ingraham’s show on Fox News, came after Kelly was asked about the recent decision by a Virginia church to remove plaques that honored the Confederate general and George Washington.”

Judge Blocks Trump Transgender Troop Ban

LGBT advocates celebrate as judge blocks transgender troop ban. Politico:“Gay rights advocates celebrated a federal court decision Monday that prevents the Pentagon from enforcing the Trump administration’s ban on transgender troops. In response to a lawsuit filed by GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, a judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia issued a preliminary injunction on the ban, requiring the Pentagon to “revert to the status quo” set in June 2016, when then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced transgender troops could no longer be kicked out for their gender identity.”

Education In Crosshairs Of White Resentment

Why Education Is at the Center of Trump’s Politics of Resentment. Alternet:“There’s a myth that the largest share of Trump supporters are uneducated, unskilled, in rural areas and just frightened of change. But the bulk of his supporters were suburban, college educated and making over $70,000 a year. As I’m looking at this, I’m seeing this fear that when privilege and unequal access has been the rule, then equality looks like oppression. When you have a vision of rights and resources in the U.S. being a zero sum game, that means that when African Americans and Hispanics and Asians and Native Americans are working hard to make the 14th Amendment real, where there is equality before the law, the only way that those groups can ‘get’ is at my white expense—my white suburban comfortable life expense. And it also means that it’s going to be at my children’s expense.”
