New leak at Fukushima nuclear plant sees 70-fold radiation spike | 22 Feb 2015 | Another radioactive water leak in the sea has been detected at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, the facility's operator TEPCO announced. Contamination levels in the gutter reportedly spiked 70 times over regular readings. The sensors are connected to the gutter that pours rain and groundwater from the plant to a bay adjacent to the facility. The levels of contamination were between 50 and 70 times higher than Fukushima's already elevated radioactive status, and were detected at about 10 am local time (1.00 am GMT), AFP reported.

Fresh leak of highly radioactive water detected at Fukushima nuclear power plant | 22 Feb 2015 | Sensors at the Fukushima nuclear plant have detected a fresh leak of highly radioactive water into the sea. Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said the sensors, which were rigged to a gutter that pours rain and ground water at the Fukushima Daiichi plant to a nearby bay, detected contamination levels up to 70 times greater than the already-high radioactive status seen at the plant campus.

"The Iraqi Parliament's National Security and Defense Committee has access to the photos of both planes that are British and have crashed while they were carrying weapons for the ISIL," Head of the committee Hakem al-Zameli said, according to a Monday report of the Arabic-language information center of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq. He said the Iraqi parliament has asked London for explanations in this regard. The senior Iraqi legislator further unveiled that the government in Baghdad is receiving daily reports from people and security forces in al-Anbar province on numerous flights by the US-led coalition planes that airdrop weapons and supplies for ISIL in terrorist-held areas.

ISIS plans to capture Lebanese territories, declare emirate - report | 23 Feb 2015 | Islamic State militants are planning to extend their positions to Lebanon and declare an "Islamic emirate" there, Lebanese media says. IS extremists are also planning suicide bombings in Beirut, according to the report. IS (formerly known as ISIS, ISIL) militants are "preparing military plans to declare an Islamic emirate in Lebanon very soon," security sources told Lebanon’s Daily Star. The report added that the jihadists are preparing to establish a military committee that will oversee "Lebanese affairs" while "considering Lebanon as part of its state."

France deploys aircraft carrier against ISIS in Iraq - Defence Ministry | 23 Feb 2015 | France has deployed its Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier against the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) extremist group in Iraq, French media report citing government officials. "The integration of the Charles de Gaulle in the operation...(in Iraq) begins this morning," a member of Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian's staff told AFP. The ship's deployment, during which it will provide airstrikes against Islamic State militants, is expected to last until May at the earliest.

Leaked cables show Netanyahu's Iran bomb claim contradicted by Mossad | 23 Feb 2015 | Binyamin Netanyahu's dramatic declaration to world leaders in 2012 that Iran was about a year away from making a nuclear bomb was contradicted by his own secret service, according to a top-secret Mossad document. It is part of a cache of hundreds of dossiers, files and cables from the world's major intelligence services -- one of the biggest spy leaks in recent times. Brandishing a cartoon of a bomb with a red line to illustrate his point, the Israeli prime minister warned the UN in New York that Iran would be able to build nuclear weapons the following year and called for action to halt the process. But in a secret report shared with South Africa a few weeks later, Israel's intelligence agency concluded that Iran was "not performing the activity necessary to produce weapons".

Brennan is planning a major expansion of the agency's cyber espionage capabilities as part of a broad restructuring of an intelligence service long defined by its human spy work, current and former U.S. officials said. U.S. officials said Brennan's plans call for increased use of cyber capabilities in almost every category of operations -- whether identifying foreign officials to recruit as CIA informants, confirming the identities of targets of drone strikes or penetrating Internet-savvy adversaries such as the Islamic State. Several officials said that Brennan's team has even considered creating a new cyber directorate -- a step that would put the agency's technology experts on equal footing with the operations and analysis branches that have been pillars of the CIA's organizational structure for decades.

UK Warning to Judge in Terror Trial | 23 Feb 2015 | A British government official has warned a New York judge of "grave" consequences if MI5 agents testifying in the trial of an alleged al Qaeda terrorist are identified from court illustrations. Several MI5 agents are due to give evidence in the coming days in the trial of Abid Naseer, a Pakistani student accused of plotting bomb attacks on the Arndale Centre in Manchester, the New York subway and targets in Copenhagen. The agents will be identified only by number, and will appear in "light disguise", expected to include make-up and in some cases wigs, in an attempt to protect their identities while allowing the jury to gauge their facial expressions. The intervention from the unnamed British official came as US District Judge Raymond Dearie considered a prosecution request that the agents' faces should not be drawn accurately by court artists.

A video released over the weekend urged Muslims to attack shopping malls in the U.S., Canada, Britain and other Western countries. Following the threat, the NYPD issued a statement saying they were aware of the video and have taken steps to ensure the safety of New Yorkers.

National security: Abbott would revoke citizenship as part of extremism fight | 23 Feb 2015 | In a national security speech on Monday, Tony Abbott outlined a series of planned counter-terrorism measures including the power to revoke citizenship in the case of dual nationals. Amendments to the Citizenship Act would allow the government to revoke or suspend the Australian citizenship of dual nationals, he said. And for individuals involved in terrorism who held only Australian citizenship, Abbott said he was considering "suspending some of the privileges of citizenship" such as "restricting the ability to leave or return to Australia, and access to consular services overseas, as well as access to welfare payments". The prime minister chose to deliver his long-awaited national security address at an event at the Australian federal police (AFP) headquarters in Canberra, rather than to parliament.

ASIO cases soar as Abbott announces terrorism czar | 23 Feb 2015 | The number of high-priority ASIO [Australian Security Intelligence Organisation] terrorism investigations has doubled to 400 in the past year in what Tony Abbott will today warn is a "long-term era" of heightened national security threat. As part of a much-touted speech on Monday, the Prime Minister will announce the creation of a new counter-terrorism czar to strengthen co-ordination between national security agencies -- an approach similar to the government's border-protection model. According to comments provided in advance by his office, Mr Abbott says ASIO is currently investigating "several thousand leads and persons of concern" including 400 high priority cases -- double the number from a year ago.

A loophole in immigration law is costing thousands of American jobs | 20 Feb 2015 | Imagine getting a layoff notice, then being ordered to train your replacement. That's what has happened to hundreds of information technology employees at Southern California Edison. Since last summer, Edison, which serves nearly 14 million customers, has been firing its domestic IT workers and replacing them with outsourced employees from India. In doing so, the utility is exploiting a gaping loophole in immigration law, which Congress has failed to close despite years of warnings that it's costing thousands of American jobs. Edison is using the [H-1B visa] program...to cut its wage costs, possibly by as much as 40%, according to data compiled by Ron Hira, a public policy expert at Howard University.

On his television show, the top-rated cable news anchor declared that the American press isn't "half as responsible as the men who forged the nation." He bemoaned the supposed culture of deception within the liberal media, and he proclaimed that the Williams controversy should prompt questioning of other "distortions" by left-leaning outlets. Yet for years, O'Reilly has recounted dramatic stories about his own war reporting that don't withstand scrutiny—even claiming he acted heroically in a war zone that he apparently never set foot in.
