Moscow to consider countermeasures after US extends anti-Russia sanctions | 22 Dec 2015 | Moscow says it will consider countermeasures after the US announced an updated sanctions list targeting 34 individuals and entities in order to "pressure Russia" over the Ukraine crisis. The Kremlin, in turn, said it will analyze Washington's decision and may develop countermeasures. The sanctions imposed on Tuesday are "a continuation of this unfriendly stance towards Russia, a continuation of the stance which has a devastating impact on bilateral relations," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

The meeting was targeted by a motorcyclist carrying a bomb. In addition to the servicemembers killed, three were injured, according to NATO command headquarters in Afghanistan. The attack occurred outside a sprawling U.S. airbase in Bagram, located 34 miles north of Kabul.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian heads for Moscow this Monday in pursuit of enhanced collaboration between France and Russia to combat Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) [but still I-CIA-SIS] on Syrian soil. His main goal is to ask Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu to increase strikes against IS, according to AFP.

Warsame was arrested and charged Dec. 9 with one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and one count of providing such support.

Four arrested after bomb scare causes Air France flight to divert to Kenya | 20 Dec 2015 | Four people have been arrested over a suspicious device that was found in the restroom of an Air France flight, prompting an emergency landing in Kenya early Sunday. The four had all been on board Air France Flight 463, a Boeing 777 bound from Mauritius to Paris, which was diverted to the coastal Kenyan city of Mombasa after the device was found, Kenyan Cabinet secretary for the Ministry of Interior Joseph Nkaissery told CNN. The object was analyzed and found to contain no explosives, the airline said.

Suspected bomb forces Air France flight from Mauritius to Paris to land in Kenya - official | 20 Dec 2015 | An Air France flight from Mauritius to Paris was forced to land in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa after a device suspected to be a bomb was found in the lavatory, a Kenyan police official said Sunday. The Boeing 777 Air France flight 463 was heading to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris when the pilots requested an emergency landing at the Moi International Airport at 12:37 a.m., police spokesman Charles Owino said. "It requested an emergency landing when a device suspected to be an explosive was discovered in the lavatory," Owino said.

Police stopped Europe's most wanted terrorist THREE times in the hours immediately after the Paris attacks but he was released every time, according to his getaway driver --Salah Abdeslam was stopped three times a few hours after the Paris attacks --Until now it had been thought Abdeslam had only been stopped once | 20 Dec 2015 | Police stopped the most wanted terrorist in Europe three times a few hours after the Paris attacks - but he was let free every time, it emerged today. The astonishing revelations about Salah Abdeslam, 26, highlight the lax security that ultimately allowed Islamic State operatives to murder 130 people at will. Until today it was thought that Abdeslam, a Belgian-born Frenchman who is still on the run, was questioned once by a traffic patrol on the day after the atrocities...Hamza Attou, a Belgian friend who has been charged with 'assisting in terrorist activity' by driving Salah to Brussels, told prosecutors they were stopped 'not once, but three times'.

California governor declares emergency in response to San Bernardino attack | 18 Dec 2015 | California Governor Jerry Brown on Friday declared a state of emergency in San Bernardino County, following the massacre by an Islamic State-inspired couple at a holiday party for county workers. Because the 14 people killed and 26 wounded in the terrorist attack were largely employees in the county's environmental health department, the massacre left San Bernardino County with too few health inspectors and others needed to carry out critical work, Brown said in his emergency proclamation. Declaring an emergency will allow the state to send in health inspectors as replacements until the county is able to resume normal staffing, Brown said.

Thousands evacuated in disaster drills near Japan's 1st post-Fukushima nuclear plant | 20 Dec 2015 | About 3,600 officials and residents have taken part in nuclear disaster drills near Japan's Sendai Nuclear Power Plant. The plant was the first to be reopened following the 2011 Fukushima disaster, despite warnings over tectonic risks. The drills in Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan, within 30 km of the power plant, simulated a serious nuclear accident, Kyodo news reported. At least 1,200 residents who were living within 5 km from the Sendai plant were evacuated by buses and other vehicles. Sendai Nuclear Power Plant, in the city of Satsumasendai - with a population of 100,000 people - is [insanely] located near the volcanically active Kirishima mountain range. Mount Ioyama, located just 65 kilometers away from the plant, is experiencing tremors, prompting the Meteorological Agency to issue warnings. [Instead of doing 'disaster drills,' just don't build nuclear plants, *duh.*]

7 more nuclear waste 'hot spots' found in St. Louis suburb | 22 Dec 2015 | (MO) Three-hundred residents of North St. Louis County crowded into a local gym, anxious about what they would hear. Soil near the local creek was contaminated by improperly stored nuclear weapons [radioactive] waste in the 1960's and 70's, and people have been getting sick. The Army Corps of Engineers was there to deliver the latest test results. The seven new "hot spots," areas of low level nuclear contamination radiation, were discovered as crews tested the creek this summer.

Plutonium exposure prompts investigation into inactive nuclear arms plant --Tom Carpenter, executive director of the watchdog group Hanford Challenge, said Energy officials were trying to minimize the seriousness of the incident. | 18 Dec 2015 | A worker at a shuttered nuclear weapons plant in Washington state was contaminated with plutonium earlier this month, triggering a federal investigation into the transportation of potentially contaminated ventilation devices through three states, the Times has learned. The incident occurred during cleanup operations at the Plutonium Finishing Plant, a highly contaminated facility that has been inactive for 25 years at the Hanford Site in central Washington, along the Columbia River. The worker, an employee of CH2M Hill, was exposed when he removed his hazmat suit, but a subsequent investigation found contamination on the ventilation unit's hose.

Obama signs $1.1 trillion spending package, approves controversial CISA surveillance legislation | 19 Dec 2015 | President Barack Obama signed a 1.1 trillion spending package which bankrolls the government through next year. While it includes tax breaks for low-wage earners, it also includes a controversial cybersecurity measure slipped in during negotiations. Labeled the Cybersecurity Act of 2015, it is actually a combination of three bills passed by Congress over the year, including the often-criticized Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2015 (CISA). The new law authorizes companies to share information about cyber threats with "any federal entity." Any company participating in the data sharing would be immune from consumer lawsuits. Once the Department of Homeland Security has all the pertinent details, they could be passed along to the FBI and NSA for further investigation and, potentially, legal action.

Lindsey Graham Drops Out of GOP Presidential Race --Long-shot bid for the White House never gained much traction | 21 Dec 2015 | Republican Lindsey Graham has ended his long-shot bid for the White House, saying he is suspending his presidential campaign in a television interview that aired Monday. "I'm going to suspend my campaign," the South Carolina senator told CNN. In his campaign, Mr. Graham made a case for a strong, interventionist [cray cray] American foreign policy and has called for called for allowing some undocumented immigrants to stay in the U.S.

Trump: Fellow Republicans are 'jealous as h-ll' of Putin's praise | 19 Dec 2015 | Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Saturday that anyone who criticizes the warm compliments he has swapped with Russian President Vladimir Putin is simply "jealous as h-ll." Trump has maintained that Russia could be a powerful partner for the United States -- and one that could help the country save some money. "You know, he feels good about me. I feel, frankly, good about him. I think that we can do things with Russia that are to our advantage...It's a mutual advantage," Trump said during a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday afternoon. "Now, they're jealous as h-ll because he's not mentioning these people. He's not going to mention them, so they're jealous as h-ll. So a couple of them came out with: 'Oh, well, you don't want to be friends.' Oh no, we don't want to be friends. No, we want to spend another five trillion dollars continuing to fight..."

TPP dirt-bag Mitch McConnell planning to rig GOP primaries, to ensure a corpora-terrorist like himself 'wins:' Mitch McConnell Warns YOU Not to Vote for Donald Trump - Or Else... | 20 Dec 2015 | Senate Majority Leader [sociopath] Mitch McConnell declared he would not entertain nominating any non-traditional Mainstream Republican candidates in the 2016 election cycle and cautioned voters they are to follow his example. The message was clear from one of the most powerful Republicans in the nation - the entirety of the GOP Machine is ready and willing to go to war with Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and any other Republican candidate who doesn't conform to Mr. McConnell's version of an "acceptable" Republican. "We will not nominate anybody for the United States Senate on the Republican side who’s not appealing to a general-election audience."

Congress's $12 billion giveaway to health insurers | 15 Dec 2015 | As Congress rushes to pass an omnibus tax/spending bill for the coming year, it's concocting a special tax break for health-insurance companies. And it amounts to a back-door bailout. Until this week, insurance-company lobbyists and their allies in the White House were pushing for an outright bailout, spending taxpayer dollars to cover what insurers are losing on ObamaCare plans to persuade insurers to keep selling them...This is good news for the insurers - but only insurers. The taxpayers are still on the losing side in this crony-capitalism deal...Suspending the tax is in effect handing the industry an estimated 12 billion a year, according to the Congressional Budget Office, exceeding even what insurers would've received in a bailout.

New Zealand judge rules Kim Dotcom eligible for extradition to U.S. | 23 Dec 2015 | A judge in New Zealand has ruled that Internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom can be sent back to the U.S. where he faces criminal charges. Dotcom and three of his former business associates -- Mathias Ortmann, Finn Batato and Bram van der Kolk -- are eligible for extradition under Thursday's decision. Dotcom, the millionaire founder of Megaupload -- a file-sharing site that became one of the Internet's largest bastions of pirated content -- is wanted in the U.S. for reproducing and distributing copyrighted content from movies to e-books on a massive scale.

Kentucky gov removes names of clerks from marriage licenses | 22 Dec 2015 | Kentucky Republican Gov. Matt Bevin ordered the state to prepare new marriage licenses that do not include the names of county clerks, in an attempt to protect the religious beliefs of clerk Kim Davis and other local elected officials. Bevin said he directed the Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives to issue the revised marriage license forms to all county clerks. The executive order comes after Davis, the Rowan County clerk, spent five days in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Bevin said he issued the executive order to "ensure that the sincerely held religious beliefs of all Kentuckians are honored."

Grand Jury Declines to Indict Anyone in Death of Sandra Bland | 21 Dec 2015 | Grand jurors in Texas declined on Monday to indict anyone in connection to the July death of a Chicago-area woman, Sandra Bland, at the Waller County jail, one of the special prosecutors assigned to the case said. But Darrell Jordan, the special prosecutor, said that "the case is still open," and that grand jurors would reconvene next month to discuss other aspects of the case. Many activists have called for charges against Brian Encinia, the Texas state trooper who arrested Ms. Bland after a routine traffic stop turned contentious. Mr. Jordan said Monday's decision not to indict anyone related only to Ms. Bland's death and to the conduct of the jail staff.

Polar bears travel further as Arctic sea-ice drifts | 16 Dec 2015 | Polar bears are working harder just to stay in one place, as the Arctic sea-ice on which they hunt drifts away. US scientists have tracked the animals for nearly 30 years and find they have increased their activity levels. Their normal behaviour is to stake out holes in the ice, waiting to prey on the seals as they emerge. But the thinning pack in the warming Arctic is now drifting faster than it used to, and the bears must travel further to get back to their territory.

Archie the toothless 41-year-old bear is put to sleep after a last meal of a cream-filled doughnut and tapioca pudding | 21 Dec 2015 | A beloved toothless, 41-year-old bear in the middle of a permit dispute between his owners and the state was put to sleep last week after finishing a last meal that included a cream-filled doughnut. The black bear named Archie had been in failing health for months and wasn't expected to live through hibernation, said owners Jeffrey and Debra Gillium. He was euthanized by a veterinarian on Friday after the Gilliums gave him a big breakfast of dog food mixed with tapioca pudding and a doughnut. The Gilliums had fought to keep Archie despite failing to get a permit when Ohio tightened rules for keeping dangerous animals. They argued that the bear was old and unlikely to escape his fenced enclosure near Lodi, roughly 40 miles southwest of Cleveland. [Correction: CLG had originally reported that Archie, the beloved black bear, 'died in his sleep.' (See: Archie the Bear, Center of Ohio Dept. of Agriculture Battle With Lodi Family, Dies at Home By Lori Price 18 Dec 2015.) In fact, Archie was euthanized, as summarized above. CLG regrets the error.]

New leak at Fukushima nuclear plant sees 70-fold radiation spike | 22 Feb 2015 | Another radioactive water leak in the sea has been detected at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, the facility's operator TEPCO announced. Contamination levels in the gutter reportedly spiked 70 times over regular readings. The sensors are connected to the gutter that pours rain and groundwater from the plant to a bay adjacent to the facility. The levels of contamination were between 50 and 70 times higher than Fukushima's already elevated radioactive status, and were detected at about 10 am local time (1.00 am GMT), AFP reported.

Fresh leak of highly radioactive water detected at Fukushima nuclear power plant | 22 Feb 2015 | Sensors at the Fukushima nuclear plant have detected a fresh leak of highly radioactive water into the sea. Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said the sensors, which were rigged to a gutter that pours rain and ground water at the Fukushima Daiichi plant to a nearby bay, detected contamination levels up to 70 times greater than the already-high radioactive status seen at the plant campus.

Iraqi Army Downs 2 UK Planes Carrying Weapons for ISIL --Iraqi lawmaker says US prefers chaotic situation in Anbar Province -- which is near cities of Karbala and Baghdad -- as it does not want ISIL crisis to come to an end | 23 Feb 2015 | Iraq's army has shot down two British planes as they were carrying weapons for the ISIL terrorists in Al-Anbar province, a senior lawmaker disclosed on Monday. "The Iraqi Parliament's National Security and Defense Committee has access to the photos of both planes that are British and have crashed while they were carrying weapons for the ISIL," Head of the committee Hakem al-Zameli said, according to a Monday report of the Arabic-language information center of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq. He said the Iraqi parliament has asked London for explanations in this regard. The senior Iraqi legislator further unveiled that the government in Baghdad is receiving daily reports from people and security forces in al-Anbar province on numerous flights by the US-led coalition planes that airdrop weapons and supplies for ISIL in terrorist-held areas.

ISIS plans to capture Lebanese territories, declare emirate - report | 23 Feb 2015 | Islamic State militants are planning to extend their positions to Lebanon and declare an "Islamic emirate" there, Lebanese media says. IS extremists are also planning suicide bombings in Beirut, according to the report. IS (formerly known as ISIS, ISIL) militants are "preparing military plans to declare an Islamic emirate in Lebanon very soon," security sources told Lebanon’s Daily Star. The report added that the jihadists are preparing to establish a military committee that will oversee "Lebanese affairs" while "considering Lebanon as part of its state."

France deploys aircraft carrier against ISIS in Iraq - Defence Ministry | 23 Feb 2015 | France has deployed its Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier against the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) extremist group in Iraq, French media report citing government officials. "The integration of the Charles de Gaulle in the operation...(in Iraq) begins this morning," a member of Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian's staff told AFP. The ship's deployment, during which it will provide airstrikes against Islamic State militants, is expected to last until May at the earliest.

Leaked cables show Netanyahu's Iran bomb claim contradicted by Mossad | 23 Feb 2015 | Binyamin Netanyahu's dramatic declaration to world leaders in 2012 that Iran was about a year away from making a nuclear bomb was contradicted by his own secret service, according to a top-secret Mossad document. It is part of a cache of hundreds of dossiers, files and cables from the world's major intelligence services -- one of the biggest spy leaks in recent times. Brandishing a cartoon of a bomb with a red line to illustrate his point, the Israeli prime minister warned the UN in New York that Iran would be able to build nuclear weapons the following year and called for action to halt the process. But in a secret report shared with South Africa a few weeks later, Israel's intelligence agency concluded that Iran was "not performing the activity necessary to produce weapons".

US wants to slow down Afghanistan troop withdrawal | 22 Feb 2015 | Washington is considering shifting the deadline for troop its withdrawal from Afghanistan to make sure the "progress" from over 13 years of US operations in the country "sticks," the new US Defense Secretary said during a surprise visit to Kabul. "Our priority now is to make sure this progress sticks," Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said in a news conference in Kabul with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. "That is why President Obama is considering a number of options to reinforce our support for President [US-installed troll] Ghani's security strategy, including possible changes to the timeline for our drawdown of US troops."

Liam Fox: It is time to arm Ukraine | 21 Feb 2015 | Britain must arm Ukraine in order to halt Russian aggression, Liam Fox has said. Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, the [deranged] former defence secretary warns that the West must "wake up" to the reality of the Kremlin's "clear strategic plan" to dominate Europe from the Baltics to the Balkans. European states must prioritise national security over welfare and foreign aid, and equip the Ukrainian government with anti-tank weapons, surveillance drones and encrypted technology, Dr Fox argues.

CIA looks to expand its cyber espionage capabilities | 23 Feb 2015 | CIA Director John O. Brennan is planning a major expansion of the agency's cyber espionage capabilities as part of a broad restructuring of an intelligence service long defined by its human spy work, current and former U.S. officials said. U.S. officials said Brennan's plans call for increased use of cyber capabilities in almost every category of operations -- whether identifying foreign officials to recruit as CIA informants, confirming the identities of targets of drone strikes or penetrating Internet-savvy adversaries such as the Islamic State. Several officials said that Brennan's team has even considered creating a new cyber directorate -- a step that would put the agency's technology experts on equal footing with the operations and analysis branches that have been pillars of the CIA's organizational structure for decades.

UK Warning to Judge in Terror Trial | 23 Feb 2015 | A British government official has warned a New York judge of "grave" consequences if MI5 agents testifying in the trial of an alleged al Qaeda terrorist are identified from court illustrations. Several MI5 agents are due to give evidence in the coming days in the trial of Abid Naseer, a Pakistani student accused of plotting bomb attacks on the Arndale Centre in Manchester, the New York subway and targets in Copenhagen. The agents will be identified only by number, and will appear in "light disguise", expected to include make-up and in some cases wigs, in an attempt to protect their identities while allowing the jury to gauge their facial expressions. The intervention from the unnamed British official came as US District Judge Raymond Dearie considered a prosecution request that the agents' faces should not be drawn accurately by court artists.

NYPD Takes 'Precautionary Measures' Following Threat Against U.S. Shopping Malls | 22 Feb 2015 | The NYPD is on alert following a threat against the United States purportedly by Somalia's 'al-Qaida'-linked rebel group al-Shabab. A video released over the weekend urged Muslims to attack shopping malls in the U.S., Canada, Britain and other Western countries. Following the threat, the NYPD issued a statement saying they were aware of the video and have taken steps to ensure the safety of New Yorkers.

Heads up! A big, fat false flag is likely in the works, so the DHS can get its funding: Terror group labels Mall of America a key target | 22 Feb 2015 | A video purported to be by Somalia's al-Qaida[al-CIAduh]-linked rebel group al-Shabab urged Muslims to attack shopping malls in the U.S., Canada, Britain and other Western countries, making special mention of the Mall of America. The masked narrator concluded an hour-long video by calling on Muslims to attack shopping malls, specifically naming the Mall of America, as well as the West Edmonton Mall in Canada and the Westfield mall in Stratford, England. The extremists also warned Kenya of more attacks like the September 2013 assault on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi in which 67 people were killed [likely, by military contractors].

National security: Abbott would revoke citizenship as part of extremism fight | 23 Feb 2015 | In a national security speech on Monday, Tony Abbott outlined a series of planned counter-terrorism measures including the power to revoke citizenship in the case of dual nationals. Amendments to the Citizenship Act would allow the government to revoke or suspend the Australian citizenship of dual nationals, he said. And for individuals involved in terrorism who held only Australian citizenship, Abbott said he was considering "suspending some of the privileges of citizenship" such as "restricting the ability to leave or return to Australia, and access to consular services overseas, as well as access to welfare payments". The prime minister chose to deliver his long-awaited national security address at an event at the Australian federal police (AFP) headquarters in Canberra, rather than to parliament.

ASIO cases soar as Abbott announces terrorism czar | 23 Feb 2015 | The number of high-priority ASIO [Australian Security Intelligence Organisation] terrorism investigations has doubled to 400 in the past year in what Tony Abbott will today warn is a "long-term era" of heightened national security threat. As part of a much-touted speech on Monday, the Prime Minister will announce the creation of a new counter-terrorism czar to strengthen co-ordination between national security agencies -- an approach similar to the government's border-protection model. According to comments provided in advance by his office, Mr Abbott says ASIO is currently investigating "several thousand leads and persons of concern" including 400 high priority cases -- double the number from a year ago.

'Citizenfour' Wins Oscar for Best Documentary | 22 Feb 2015 | Revealing state secrets have turned into Oscar acclaim for the makers of the Edward Snowden documentary "Citizenfour." Laura Poitras's film documents her initial meeting with Snowden, as well as journalist Glenn Greenwald. It's an uncommonly intimate view of what became a historic and much debated act: Snowden leaking National Security Agency documents that revealed the previously undisclosed collection of Americans' phone and email records.

Bill O'Reilly twisted truth on 'war zone' account, says former CBS colleague | 22 Feb 2015 | Former colleagues of Bill O'Reilly who worked alongside the Fox News [sic] anchorman in Argentina as the Falklands War ended more than 30 years ago have contradicted his claims to have encountered a perilous situation in a "war zone". Eric Engberg, a fellow CBS News correspondent who was in Buenos Aires with O'Reilly in 1982, said the situation there "was not a war zone or even close" and that he and other colleagues did not recall a dangerous incident O'Reilly describes involving an injured cameraman. Six other CBS journalists also challenge O'Reilly's claims, CNN reported on Sunday, adding further pressure on the 65-year-old host of the O'Reilly Factor.

A loophole in immigration law is costing thousands of American jobs | 20 Feb 2015 | Imagine getting a layoff notice, then being ordered to train your replacement. That's what has happened to hundreds of information technology employees at Southern California Edison. Since last summer, Edison, which serves nearly 14 million customers, has been firing its domestic IT workers and replacing them with outsourced employees from India. In doing so, the utility is exploiting a gaping loophole in immigration law, which Congress has failed to close despite years of warnings that it's costing thousands of American jobs. Edison is using the [H-1B visa] program...to cut its wage costs, possibly by as much as 40%, according to data compiled by Ron Hira, a public policy expert at Howard University.

Breaking: Judge strikes down Nebraska law that allowed Keystone pipeline to proceed through state 19 Feb 2014 A Nebraska judge on Wednesday struck down a law that allowed the Keystone XL oil pipeline to proceed through the state, a victory for opponents who have tried to block the project. Lancaster County Judge Stephanie Stacy issued a ruling that invalidated Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman's approval of the route. Stacy agreed with opponents' arguments that law passed in 2011 improperly delegated the decision-making power to Heineman to give the company eminent domain powers within the state.

Snowden Documents Reveal Covert Surveillance and Pressure Tactics Aimed at WikiLeaks, Supporters 18 Feb 2014 Top-secret documents from the National Security Agency and its British counterpart reveal for the first time how the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom targeted WikiLeaks and other activist groups with tactics ranging from covert surveillance to prosecution. The efforts - detailed in documents provided previously by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden - included a broad campaign of international pressure aimed not only at WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, but at what the U.S. government calls "the human network that supports WikiLeaks." The documents also contain internal discussions about targeting the file-sharing site Pirate Bay and hacktivist collectives such as Anonymous. One classified document from Government Communications Headquarters, Britain's top spy agency, shows that GCHQ used its surveillance system to secretly monitor visitors to a WikiLeaks site.

NSA and GCHQ spying on WikiLeaks 18 Feb 2014 Julian Assange calls for the appointment of a Special Prosecutor to investigate the NSA, after documents show US spying on WikiLeaks and its supporters. Today, documents were published from the national security whistleblower Edward Snowden, detailing US and UK spying efforts against the publishing organization WikiLeaks. One document shows that as far back as 2010 the US National Security Agency added WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange to a "MANHUNTING" target list, together with suspected members of al-Qaeda [al-CIAduh]. Another shows that the NSA wanted to designate WikiLeaks as a "malicious foreign actor" in order to expand the NSA's ability to target WikiLeaks staff, associates and supporters. And a third document, from 2012, demonstrates that the NSA's UK partner GCHQ also spied on WikiLeaks and its readers.

Bomb attacks kill at least 24 in Iraq capital 17 Feb 2014 At least 24 people were killed in bomb explosions in the Iraqi capital late on Monday, including blasts near two Shi'ite Muslim mosques and at a busy bus station, police and medics said. US diplomats given 48 hours to leave Venezuela 18 Feb 2014 Venezuela has given three American 'diplomats' from the US Embassy in Caracas 48 hours to exit the country after President Nicolas Maduro leveled accusations of conspiracy and meeting with students to incite anti-government sentiment. Following days of [CIA-backed] opposition protests, three unnamed diplomats were declared persona non grata by Maduro during a televised address on Sunday night. On Monday, Venezuela's Minister of Foreign Affairs Elias Jaua announced that the US diplomats in question were vice consuls Breann Marie McCusker and Jeffrey Elsen, and Kristofer Lee Clark, who holds the rank of second secretary at the US consulate.

Tepco took months to release record strontium readings at Fukushima 13 Feb 2014 The operator of Japan's wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant knew about record high measurements of a dangerous isotope in groundwater at the plant for five months before telling the country's nuclear watchdog, a regulatory official told Reuters. Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) said late on Wednesday it detected 5 million becquerels per liter of radioactive strontium-90 in a sample from a groundwater well about 25 meters from the ocean last September. That reading was more than five times the broader all-beta radiation reading taken at the same well two months earlier.

Radiation alarm at New Mexico nuclear disposal plant spurs air shutoff 17 Feb 2014 An alarm late Friday night indicating higher than usual levels of airborne radiation led to a first-of-its-kind response at a nuclear disposal facility outside of Carlsbad, New Mexico, an Energy Department spokesman told CNN. An air monitor at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant detected the spike in an isolated area half a mile below the ground. The incident prompted an immediate shutoff of filtered air from the facility into the environment around it. "This is the first time we had to close off air filtered by the facility to the outside," Energy Department spokesman Gregory Sahd told CNN.

NORAD: 'Several' aircraft violate restricted airspace during Obama visit 16 Feb 2014 Fighter jets intercepted several airplanes that entered a restricted flight zone above Rancho Mirage Saturday during President Barack Obama's visit. None of the airplanes had proper clearances or communications Saturday afternoon, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command. Each plane was intercepted and escorted out of the area by an F-16 fighter jet, according to NORAD.

'Why were 26 small Christmas Trees behind Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department on 14 Dec. 2012?' --Sandy Hook: Free Homes and 'Big Bucks' Incentives for Leaders and Players By James H. Fetzer, Ph.D. 17 Feb 2014 Wolfgang Halbig –- a former Florida State Trooper, former school principal and nationally recognized expert on school safety -- has brought a new level of expertise [regarding] Sandy Hook. Halbig asks: "Why were NO trauma Helicopters requested that morning when lives could have been saved? Why no paramedics or EMTs were allowed into the school building instead they were told to set up triage? Who declared all 24 school children and school staff legally dead within the first 11 minutes since only a doctor can do that -- not a police officer -- per CT state laws? Two children supposedly died at the hospital which it took over an hour to transport. Why?" ...The fascinating questions that Wolfgang has raised include, "Why were 26 small Christmas Trees behind the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department on 14 December 2012 and decorated on 15 December 2012?" They do not have, say, 60 or 100 trees because, if they did, it would be obvious that they would be having a Christmas tree sale. But instead we see that they have just 26 small trees all by themselves. That would seem to suggest there was a plan to have 26 "victims" whose deaths were to be observed, but before the event to be commemorated had taken place.

Bridge scandal: Fort Lee mayor won't cooperate with Chris Christie lawyers 17 Feb 2014 The mayor of Fort Lee said today he will not cooperate with lawyers hired by Gov. Chris Christie's office to [pretend to] investigate the George Washington Bridge scandal as the legal seesawing over the controversial lane closures continues. In a letter sent today to Randy Mastro, a former federal prosecutor leading the governor's legal team, an attorney for Mayor Mark Sokolich declines to have his client sit for a private interview, or to voluntarily hand over documents related to the closures. Mastro had requested both in a letter sent more than a week ago.

The photo appears to be to have been taken on school property, but Chando did not confirm that.

News Updates from CLG22 Feb 2014

Previous edition: Obama's TPP negotiators received huge bonuses from big banks (Google relegated this one to the spam bin.)

100 tonnes of highly radioactive water leak from Fukushima nuclear plant 20 Feb 2014 Around 100 tonnes of highly radioactive water have leaked from a storage tank at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, operator Tokyo Electric (Tepco) says. The toxic radioactive water may have overflowed after a valve was left open by mistake, Tepco said. The latest leak is the most serious since August, when the plant leaked 300 tonnes of water, prompting Japan's nuclear agency to raise the incident's alert level. The water from Wednesday's leak was radioactive, with a reading of 230 million becquerels per litre of radioactive isotopes, Tepco spokesman Masayuki Ono told reporters.

N.M. Nuclear Waste Site Stays Closed After Radiation Leak Plugged 21 Feb 2014 A radiation leak at a nuclear waste storage site below the New Mexico desert has been plugged, but the facility will remain closed for at least the next three weeks, officials said late Thursday. The facility near Carlsbad was cleared last Friday when an underground air-monitoring alarm went off, indicating unsafe concentrations of radiation inside the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). "Any type of release outside of the facility or inside the facility is unacceptable and is disconcerting," said Ryan Flynn, an official at the New Mexico Environment Department. "From the state's perspective, one event is far too many."

CIA Agent Captured in Ukraine Helping Protesters 20 Feb 2014 A CIA agent has allegedly been captured in the Ukraine, as shown in the video. The Special Activities Division (SAD) is a division in the United States Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) National Clandestine Service (NCS), responsible for covert operations known as "special activities". Within SAD there are two separate groups, SAD/SOG for tactical paramilitary operations and SAD/PAG for covert political action. Special Operations Group (SOG) is the department within SAD responsible for operations that include the collection of intelligence in hostile countries and regions, and all high threat military or intelligence operations with which the U.S. government does not wish to be overtly associated. As such, members of the unit (called Paramilitary Operations Officers and Specialized Skills Officers) normally do not carry any objects or clothing (i.e., military uniforms) that would associate them with the US government.

Ukraine peace deal halts violence but 'crowds' still angry 21 Feb 2014 A breakthrough peace deal for Ukraine halted two days of violence that had turned the center of the capital into a war zone and killed 77 people, bringing sweeping political change that met many demands of the pro-European opposition. Russian-backed President Viktor Yanukovich agreed to give up powers, hold early elections and form a government of national unity. Parliament voted for changes to the legal code that could see the release of Yanukovich's jailed rival, opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko. By nightfall, opposition leaders who signed the deal were addressing peaceful crowds from a stage in Independence Square, which for the previous 48 hours had been an inferno of blazing barricades and [CIA-backed] protesters were shot dead by police snipers.

Russia's Lavrov slams EU and US for double standards on Ukraine 20 Feb 2014 While the EU continues to discuss possible sanctions against Ukraine and measures that could be used to put pressure on Ukrainian officials, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov delivered a speech for the European Union and the United States, presenting a whole bouquet of accusations to the West. "Our Western partners - in Europe and the U.S. - blame the authorities of the country for everything. They do not qualify the actions of extremists the way they should be qualified. This concerns Russia a lot," Lavrov said at a news conference in Baghdad. "What we have here is double standards, and instead they threaten with sanctions, and not only threaten - the Americans have already imposed them, having thereby created an additional incentive for the opposition to stand firm," Russian Foreign Minister said.

Ukraine: sick fascist filth and gangland violence as political opposition --'The Western media is playing along as a propaganda tool for those behind the scenes.' 20 Feb 2014 With the release of a recent conversation between the US Ambassador to Ukraine and Victoria Nuland plotting the downfall of the current legitimate elected government in Kiev, it is clear who is behind the attempted coup in Ukraine. US backed "activists" with sniper rifles and handguns are openly firing on police -- something that would not be tolerated anywhere in the world, but which is being portrayed by western leaders as being legitimate opposition protest behavior.

Tweet by Nikola Mirkovic on Ukraine situation 'says it all' 20 Feb 2014 Nikola Mirkovic @1NikolaMirkovic - The 5 step Western plan 1. Provoke havoc 2. Send CNN 3. Destroy country 4. Change regime 5. Sell country to the banks #Ukraine

U.S. seeks new bases for drones targeting militants in Pakistan 16 Feb 2014 The Obama administration is making contingency plans to use air bases in Central Asia to conduct drone missile attacks in northwest Pakistan in case the White House is forced to withdraw all U.S. forces from Afghanistan at the end of this year, according to U.S. officials. American officials refused to say whether they are seeking permission to base CIA drones in Tajikistan, which allows the U.S. to ship military equipment and supplies through its territory. Officials say a new jet-powered drone, called the Predator C, or Avenger, could figure in plans to use bases outside Afghanistan.

Lawsuit brings to light secrecy statements required by KBR 19 Feb 2014 One of the nation's largest government contractors requires employees seeking to report fraud to sign internal confidentiality statements barring them from speaking to anyone about their allegations, including government investigators and prosecutors, according to a complaint filed Wednesday and corporate documents obtained by The Washington Post. Attorneys for a whistleblower suing Halliburton Co. and its former subsidiary, Kellogg Brown & Root, said the statements violate the federal False Claims Act and other laws designed to shield whistleblowers... Tim McCormack, a lawyer who specializes in whistleblower cases, said that he has seen numerous confidentiality agreements but that the one used by KBR is particularly stark because it threatens employees with termination and possible legal action if they speak out.

IED Shockwaves Inject Hidden Damage in Troops, Study Claims 13 Feb 2014 Tens of thousands of American combat veterans, many seemingly uninjured, carry higher risks of developing neurological disorders -- and perhaps future organ ailments -- simply because they were "exposed" to IED shockwaves, the Institute of Medicine reported Thursday. As the signature weapon in Iraq and Afghanistan, the improvised explosive device sends blast waves through the bodies of people even hundreds of yards from the detonation, leaving some nearby outwardly unharmed but disrupting their molecules and inner tissues. Years later, such changes could lead to adverse symptoms, according to a new IOM study.

Feds green-light 2 more solar projects in Ivanpah Valley; over 2,000 desert tortoises in jeopardy 19 Feb 2014 The U.S. Interior Department announced Wednesday it was approving two large solar projects in the Mojave Desert that may displace or harm more than 2,000 desert tortoises. In a formal Record of Decision issued February 19, Interior approved two projects on more than six square miles of public land in California and Nevada for the Stateline and Silver State South solar projects, which the Arizona-based firm First Solar wants to build near the Mojave National Preserve south of Las Vegas. According to an assessment of the projects released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2013, the two projects are expected to displace, injure, or kill up to 2,115 federally Threatened desert tortoises. Most of the mortalities will happen to young tortoises and will likely be killed without even being detected, the agency noted.

Emails link Scott Walker to secret email system 19 Feb 2014 Thousands of documents unsealed Wednesday link Gov. Scott Walker to a secret email system used in his office that would avoid public scrutiny when he was Milwaukee County executive. The records also show that on the day before he was elected governor in 2010, the secret investigation into links between Walker's county government staff and his political campaign was widened to include four more aides. That same day, search warrants were executed on Walker's campaign and county offices, as well as the homes of some of his assistants.

Arizona 'anti-gay' bill sparks protests in two cities 21 Feb 2014 Protests have been held in Arizona against the state's passage of a bill allowing business owners to refuse service to gays on religious grounds. Hundreds rallied for demonstrations in the cities of Phoenix and Tucson, a day after the bill was approved. Republican Governor Jan Brewer has not yet said if she will sign the bill into law. Similar legislation has been introduced in seven other US states, but Arizona is the only one to pass it.
