RSN: The West Is Getting War on ISIS Wrong

For years, the US supported and kept in power Saddam Hussein with his faults and brutality to stabilize the region, even arming both sides in the Iran/Iraq War.

From Sykes-Picot to Mosaddagh, the sticky fingers of the US and Allies and Gulf Monarchies have created a MESS!

There's a lengthy history beyond recent disasters that the curious should explore.

No one is taking action in the best interests of people, the artificially declared 'nations,' or the region.

No one is WAGING PEACE!

Cockburn writes: "Islamic State (Isis) will remain at the centre of the escalating crisis in the Middle East this year as it was in 2014. The territories it conquered in a series of lightning campaigns last summer remain almost entirely under its control, even though it has lost some towns to the Kurds and Shia militias in recent weeks."

CLG: German TV Shows Nazi Symbols on Helmets of Ukraine Soldiers, U.S. Inspector: Billions in failed programs wasted in Afghanistan

News Updates from CLG

US tax dollars at work: German TV Shows Nazi Symbols on Helmets of Ukraine Soldiers 9 Sept 2014 On Monday night, German public broadcaster ZDF showed video of [US-funded, US-armed] Ukrainian soldiers with Nazi symbols on their helmets in its evening newscast. In a report on the fragile cease-fire in eastern Ukraine, Moscow correspondent Bernhard Lichte used pictures of a soldier wearing a combat helmet with the "SS runes" of Hitler's infamous black-uniformed elite corps. A second soldier was seen with a swastika on his gear. The video was shot last week in Ukraine by a camera team from Norwegian broadcaster TV2.

U.S. Inspector: Billions in failed programs wasted in Afghanistan --U.S. has spent $120 billion on 'reconstruction' in Afghanistan [Too bad Detroit isn't in Afghanistan.] 12 Sept 2014 The top U.S. official for monitoring aid to Afghanistan painted a grim portrait of the country's future Friday, saying it is riddled with corruption and graft. With most Americans' attention riveted on [purposefully distracted] Iraq and Syria, John F. Sopko, the U.S. special inspector general for Afghanistan, said the United States' unprecedented 120 billion reconstruction investment there is at risk. "The country remains under assault by insurgents and is short of domestic revenue, plagued by corruption, afflicted by criminal elements [CIA] involved in opi-m and smuggling, and struggling to execute the basic functions of government," Sopko said in a speech at Georgetown University. Isis video claims to show beheading of British hostage David Haines 13 Sept 2014 Militants with the Islamic State jihadi group have released a video that appears to show the beheading of a British hostage, David Haines, an aid worker who was captured just days after he arrived in Syria last year. British government officials were seeking to authenticate the video which purported to show the final moments of Haines, who was 44. In the video, entitled A Message to the Allies of America, a masked man is shown carrying out the beheading of Haines, whose life had earlier been threatened in a video showing the murder of American journalist Steven Sotloff. The video, which runs to two minutes and 28 seconds, ends with a warning that a second British hostage would be the next to die.

Congress could strip passports from American ISIS fighters --Legislation would revoke papers of Americans who [allegedly] join Islamic State 12 Sept 2014 In light of intelligence reports that more than 100 Americans have [allegedly] signed on as fighters with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and other Republicans in Congress have launched legislation to revoke their passports and strip them of their U.S. citizenship. But while the idea has found some surface appeal in Congress, it has run into some resistance in the intelligence community, where there's debate about whether that is the best way to gather information and combat terrorism.

Israeli intelligence veterans refuse to serve in Palestinian territories 12 Sept 2014 Forty-three veterans of one of Israel’s most secretive military intelligence units -- many of them still active reservists -- have signed a public letter refusing to serve in operations involving the occupied Palestinian territories because of the widespread surveillance of innocent residents. The signatories include officers, former instructors and senior NCOs from the country's equivalent of America's NSA or Britain's GCHQ, known as Unit 8200 -- or in Hebrew as Yehida Shmoneh-Matayim. They allege that the "all-encompassing" intelligence the unit gathers on Palestinians -- much of it concerning innocent people -- is used for "political persecution" and to create divisions in Palestinian society. The largest intelligence unit in the Israeli military, Unit 8200 intercepts electronic communications including email, phone calls and social media in addition to targeting military and diplomatic traffic.

Spy court renews NSA metadata program 12 Sept 2014 With a surveillance reform bill stuck in the Senate, the federal court overseeing spy agencies on Friday reauthorized the National Security Agency's controversial bulk collection of Americans' phone records. Reauthorization from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) allows the NSA to continue to warrantlessly collect "metadata" in bulk about people's phone calls.

NSA, British spy agency have secret access to Deutsche Telekom --Spiegel said the tracking programme, which it dubbed "the Google Earth of the Internet", can be used to plan cyber attacks. 13 Sept 2014 The US National Security Agency and British intelligence services are able to secretly access data from telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom and several other German operators, according to Der Spiegel weekly. An NSA programme called "Treasure Map" gives the US agency and Britain's electronic eavesdropping GCHQ near real-time information about the operators' networks, right through to end users on computers, smartphones or tablets, Der Spiegel said in a report to appear in its Sunday edition. It is the latest in a string of revelations based on documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

Enterovirus EV-D68: Midwest Virus Confirmed in New York, More Than a Dozen Children Affected 13 Sept 2014 More than a dozen children in New York have been diagnosed with EV- D68, a rare respiratory infection, the state Health Department said Friday. The enterovirus that had been making children sick across the United States has now reached the Northeast. The health department said that the cases have been "confirmed in the Central Region and Central New York," while the department had also received sample specimens from other regions for testing.

State Police Officer Dies in Pennsylvania Ambush 13 Sept 2014 Law enforcement officers from three states were searching on Saturday for a suspect or suspects who ambushed two troopers at a state police barracks in northeastern Pennsylvania, killing one and wounding the other. The slain trooper was identified on Saturday afternoon as Cpl. Bryon K. Dickson. The wounded trooper, who was identified as Alex T. Douglass, was in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery at Geisinger Medical Center in Scranton.

Pennsylvania State Police: Trooper shot dead, another injured outside barracks 13 Sept 2014 State police say one trooper was fatally shot and another was injured when they were ambushed outside a state police barracks in northeastern Pennsylvania. A search is underway for the suspect or suspects. State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan says the shooting occurred Friday night at the barracks in Pike County's Blooming Grove during a shift change. He says one trooper was leaving the barracks and another was arriving when shots were fired.

Are American Memories so short we've forgotten the MARCH TO WAR in Iraq that destabilized the Middle East?

Didn't Americans march in the streets about the BRUTAL THUG AMERICAN KEPT IN POWER - SADDAM HUSSEIN? Didn't Americans rally with Faux News to silence the OPPOSITION as UNPATRIOTIC?

The poor historical education of Americans has contributed to yet another MARCH TO WAR.

The Sykes-Picot Agreement mandated U.S. SUPPORTED THUGS would rule.

The overthrow of Mossadagh, the installation of the BRUTAL SHAH condemned Iran for the British Monarchy to assure their rule on the backs of the oppressed.

MoJo: Top Immigration Court Hands Huge Win to Battered Women Seeking Asylum. Conservatives Freak Out.

TOP STORY

By Molly Redden

On Tuesday, the country's top immigration court ruled that some migrants escaping domestic violence may qualify for asylum in the United States. The decision, from the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), is a landmark: It's the first time that this court has recognized a protected group that primarily includes women. The ruling offers a glimmer of hope to asylum-seekers who have fled horrific abuse. The decision has also infuriated conservatives, who claim that the ruling is a veritable invitation to undocumented immigrants and marks a vast expansion of citizenship opportunities for foreigners. Boko Haram, the militant Islamist group with a foothold in northeastern Nigeria that's known for its mass kidnappings and violent tactics, released a video earlier this month making an unprecedented claim: The group announced it had added the city of Gwoza to "the Islamic caliphate."
Experts are unsure about the exact meaning of this claim, which was issued by Boko Haram's leader, Abubakar Shekau. There are at least two possibilities: The group has declared its own caliphate in Nigeria, or it has pledged allegiance to ISIS—that is, the so-called Islamic State run by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon. US Recruits Iraq Security 'Advisers' --The US Army looks to beef up its 'Office of Security Assistance', despite Barack Obama ruling out sending troops back to Iraq. 19 Aug 2014 Barack Obama may have ruled out sending "boots on the ground" back to Iraq but in the face of a growing threat from the Islamic State (IS), the Pentagon appears to have hit upon a way to get them back in by the back door. The US Army's Contracting Command has issued a tender notice for companies capable of deploying security assistance mentors and advisers in Iraq. These individuals would be required for a 12-month contract, potentially extendable to a total of 36 months...The "sources sought" document was published on August 11 by the US Army on a federal website with the intent to canvas private organisations to establish whether they were capable of supplying the services.

As predictable as rain: US official: Military has been asked to send more troops to Iraq 20 Aug 2014 The State Department has asked the Pentagon to send additional troops to Iraq, according to a U.S. official. The official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, said that the number of personnel requested is fewer than 300...The State Department wants additional security personnel to be stationed "in and around Baghdad," according to the official. The official would not say specifically where the troops would go.

Obama says U.S. will be 'relentless' in pursuing Islamic State 20 Aug 2014 A clearly furious President Obama condemned the Islamic militants who claimed responsibility for beheading an American journalist, vowing Wednesday to beat back "this cancer" and showing no sign of constraining the U.S. military intervention in Iraq. As 14 new U.S. airstrikes pounded Islamic State positions, the grisly video and photos of a masked militant killing James Foley ricocheted around the Internet...In the video, the executioner speaks English with a British accent, and U.S. and British authorities scrambled to identify him. British Prime Minister David Cameron told the BBC that it was "extremely likely" the killer was a British citizen.

U.S. troops entered Syria in failed attempt to free Foley, others --One U.S. soldier was wounded. 20 Aug 2014 Several dozen U.S. special forces troops flew into Syria last month in a bid to rescue several Americans held by the Islamic State, including journalist James Foley, but they pulled out after discovering that the captives had been moved, senior U.S. officials said Wednesday. One U.S. soldier was wounded. The raid, which took place over the July 4 weekend, is the first known instance of U.S. troops entering Syria since the brutal civil war erupted there in mid-2012.

Secret U.S. Mission in Syria to Rescue American Hostages Fails 20 Aug 2014 A US secret military mission had "recently" tried but failed "to free a number of American hostages held in Syria", the Pentagon has revealed. It did not say whether the US troops had also tried to rescue US journalist James Foley, a video of whose beheading by Islamic State appeared on Tuesday. However, senior US officials - speaking on condition of anonymity - said this was the case. IS said Foley's death was revenge for US air strikes on its fighters in Iraq.

Masked Man With English Accent 'Beheads US Journalist James Foley in Video' 20 Aug 2014 [Mossad-trained, US-armed] Islamic State militants [?] have released a video that purportedly shows the beheading of a US journalist who went missing two years ago. The footage appears to show a masked man - speaking in English with an English accent - killing James Foley, who was seized by armed men in Syria in November 2012. In the five-minute video, posted on social media sites by Islamic State sources, the man says Mr Foley was being killed because Barack Obama had ordered airstrikes against IS positions in northern Iraq.

Terrorist beheadings could happen in Australia, Tony Abbott warns as he pushes tougher security laws 21 Aug 2014 Horrific acts of terrorism such as the "truly sickening and utterly evil" beheading of journalist James Foley could happen in Western countries including Australia, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said. Speaking in Melbourne on Thursday morning, Mr Abbott said the revelation that Mr Foley's killer appeared to be British was a reminder that such atrocities were not distant events. Mr Abbott said the murder of the American journalist - the online video of which has now been authenticated by US intelligence agencies - bolstered the case for stronger counter-terrorism laws and resourcing.

Mother of Russian journalist missing in Ukraine addresses Red Cross for help 20 Aug 2014 The mother of Russian photojournalist, Andrey Stenin, missing in war-torn eastern Ukraine, has addressed the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to help find her son. Vera Stenina told RT that she addressed the ICRC "because they are looking for missing relatives. And I had hopes that I will be helped there." An experienced war photographer, Stenin, who works for the Rossiya Segodnya news agency (formerly RIA Novosti), disappeared on August 5 as he was covering the Ukrainian army's campaign against the anti-Kiev rebels in the country's southeastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

Ah, then came the dawn. Kiev fights in Ukraine's southeast for shale gas deposits to be controlled by US - Pushkov 16 Aug 2014 The control over Ukraine's southeast is important for Kiev first of all because of the shale gas deposits, which Western countries should be developing, head of the State Duma's international affairs committee Aleksey Pushkov said on Saturday. "Kiev is fighting in Ukraine's east for the gas reserves: Germany says the reserves make 5,578 billion cubic metres (bcm) [the U.S. reserves are 8,976 bcm]. Control will be from the U.S.," he wrote on Twitter. The Yuzivska shale gas field is at the border between the Kharkov and Donetsk regions. The resources are estimated at over four trillion cubic metres.

Air strikes and rocket fire resume as Gaza negotiations collapse 19 Aug 2014 Hours before a ceasefire was set to expire between Israel and Hamas, negotiations in Cairo have collapsed and rockets and air strikes have resumed. A deal on the status of Gaza or an extension of talks was expected at midnight tonight. However the Israeli delegation in Egypt has been sent back to Tel Aviv.

Israel bars Amnesty and HRW from entering Gaza, hinders investigations - report [Yeah, they're not welcome in Ferguson, Missouri, either.] 19 Aug 2014 Israel has been preventing Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch workers from entering Gaza to investigate allegations of war crimes and human rights violations, claims a media report backed by group members' statements. Both human rights organizations have been unsuccessfully trying to get permission from the regional Civil Administration to enter Gaza since July 7, Israeli outlet Haaretz reports...While both HRW and Amnesty International have been actively trying to obtain permission from Israel to enter the Gaza Strip, their requests have been turned down on seemingly bureaucratic grounds.

US *dying* to get the pandemic party started: Over 1,100 pathogen leaks in US labs in 5 years - CDC report 18 Aug 2014 US labs mishandled dangerous biomaterials at least 1,100 times between 2008 and 2012, according to hard-to-access statistics collated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and obtained by USA Today. The data, which is for the latest year available, was presented to Congress last month following an uproar over the exposure of more than 60 CDC staff to live deadly anthrax bacteria in a top Atlanta lab in June, and received by the US newspaper following a direct legal request. The hearings provoked the resignation of lab chief Michael Farrell, but the statistics covering about 1,400 licensed facilities handling dangerous materials show that the failures are systemic.

Ebola Outbreak: Liberian Army Ordered to 'Shoot on Sight' Anyone Crossing Sierra Leone Border 19 Aug 2014 Liberia's armed forces have been given orders to shoot people on sight who are attempting to illegally cross the border from Ebola-stricken Sierra Leone, according to local media reports. The order was given to soldiers stationed in Bomi and Grand Cape Mount counties on the border with Sierra Leone in hope of preventing the spread of the deadly virus, deputy chief of staff, Colonel Eric Dennis said. The decision comes as the search for 17 Liberian [alleged] Ebola patients, who escaped an attack on a quarantine centre in the Liberian capital, Monrovia, continues.

New Mexico teacher is tested for Ebola after returning from Sierra Leone trip 18 Aug 2014 A New Mexico woman is being tested for Ebola after returning from Sierra Leone with symptoms similar to those displayed by victims of the virus. However, health officials say that the 30-year-old teacher is unlikely to have the untreatable disease. Although she has a fever, muscle aches, headaches and a sore throat, the woman has had no known exposure to the virus...She is being tested by the Department of Health and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at the University of New Mexico Hospital 'out of an abundance of caution', health officials say.

Flu fascism: Nurse sues South Charleston hospital over flu shot 20 Aug 2014 (WV) A South Charleston hospital is being sued by a nurse who says she was required to get a flu shot despite being severely allergic to the vaccine. Dean filed the lawsuit last week in Kanawha County Circuit Court, the Charleston Gazette reported.

Julian Assange plans to leave Ecuadorian embassy a free man after changes to UK laws 18 Aug 2014 Julian Assange plans to walk out of Ecuador's embassy a free man, avoiding arrest and extradition to Sweden to face questioning about sexual assault and rape allegations. In an exclusive interview with Fairfax Media, Mr Assange said he anticipated legal reforms in Britain would facilitate a resolution of his circumstances and end the prospect of his extradition to Sweden. The WikiLeaks publisher flummoxed the international media on Monday by telling reporters in London that he will "soon" be leaving his refuge in Ecuador's London embassy, but not elaborating on how long "soon" might be or the circumstances in which he will end his diplomatic asylum.

Julian Assange to leave Ecuadorian embassy 'soon' 18 Aug 2014 Julian Assange has told a press conference in London that he will leave the Ecuadorian embassy that has been his home for the past two years soon - but not imminently...Assange noted that a "highly decorated journalist in Iceland" had confirmed that he was leaving the embassy "soon", but not for the reasons believed, an apparent reference to his health. But afterwards WikiLeaks's spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson made clear the rumours of Mr Assange's imminent departure weren't true.
