Want to bring back the "Scarlet Letter" for women? Vote Jeb Bush.

Let's be clear: No matter what he says, Jeb Bush is not a moderate. Scratch just beneath the surface of his carefully crafted image and Bush's frightening extremism emerges.

As the Huffington Post reported on Tuesday, Jeb Bush advocated -- in his 1995 book "Profiles in Character" -- for the use of literal public shaming as a means to curb "irresponsible behavior" like having children out of wedlock. He even name-checked Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Scarlet Letter" in order to remind readers "that public condemnation of irresponsible sexual behavior has strong historical roots."

Even worse, when he was governor of Florida, Jeb proved that he wasn't just giving lip service to this atrocious idea.

In 2001, Bush refused to veto the "Scarlet Letter Law," which required single mothers to publish a detailed account of their own sexual history in the newspaper as a pre-condition for putting children up for adoption.

I don't know about you, but I have had enough of Republicans thinking they have the right to shame, bully and lecture people -- and I definitely don't want a president who thinks it is his moral imperative to humiliate women over their sexual choices.

That's why Democracy for America is already building progressive power to beat back Jeb Bush and his Republican challengers for the White House -- as well as winning at the state and local levels in the fight against the GOP's War on Women.

Don't give Jeb Bush and the GOP the opportunity to make our country a "Scarlet Letter" society -- and turn back the clock on women's rights. Chip in $3 now so DFA can help build the grassroots army progressives need to win a resounding victory in 2016.

Jeb Bush's "Scarlet Letter" obsession doesn't put him out of step with his Republican competition -- it puts him right smack in the middle of a field of candidates known for their hostility towards women. Just recently, Scott Walker said in an interview that mandating often invasive ultrasounds for women seeking abortions was "a cool thing." And every single Republican candidate is on the record saying they would support a 20-week abortion ban on the federal level.

Let's face it: If any one of the Republican contenders wins the White House, it will be a disaster for women. And we know that the eventual GOP candidate will have almost limitless money behind them from right-wing billionaires like the Koch brothers.

That's why the time to begin organizing is NOW -- and that is just what DFA is doing.

We're digging deep into some of 2015's hottest races in places like Virginia and New Jersey, activating volunteers and building lasting networks around progressive candidates. And we've set an ambitious goal to train 25,000 volunteers by 2016, setting them up with fresh skills and technological know-how that will help them step up and become the leaders we need to win big when it matters most.

We can't let Jeb Bush's "Scarlet Letter" society become a reality. That's why we're already working to build the power it takes to win -- but we need your help if we are going to be successful.

Can you pitch in $3 now to support DFA's work to fight back against the GOP's War on Women -- and stop Republicans like Jeb Bush from winning back the White House in 2016?

Thanks for your support, now and in the critical months to come. We can't win without you.

GOP Senators Vote Against Working Americans And Block Minimum Wage Increase

A minority of 41 Senators, all Republicans, voted today to block a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $10.10. Once again, the GOP followed the orders of the Koch brothers to keep our economy working for only the wealthiest.

Earnings for the top 1 percent have gone up 177 percent (PDF) since 1980. Meanwhile, minimum wage workers are actually making 16 percent less. But Republican Senators are still refusing to give them a raise:

RTW-Line-Graph

What’s more, instead of voting to give 28 million people as much as a $4,000 raise each, these GOP Senators instead took checks from leading lobbyists from big corporations opposed to raising it. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, for instance, has taken $118,000 since 2008:

RTW-McConnell

Let’s go over just a few of the groups that these 41 Senate Republicans — whose average net worth is $6.26 million — were voting against in deciding to not even allow debate on the minimum wage bill:

But despite today’s vote, this issue isn’t going away no matter how hard Republicans wish it would. The 42nd ‘no’ vote came from Majority Leader Harry Reid, a procedural move in order to preserve the option of bringing the bill up again. And just before the vote took place, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) issued a clear indication on the Senate floor that this fight is long from over: “If we don’t succeed this time…we will bring this bill to the floor again and again and again. Sooner or later we will get it done.”

BOTTOM LINE: Instead of raising the minimum wage and giving Americans who work hard a better opportunity to get ahead, Senate Republicans have shown once again that they’re against the 99%. But this fight is far from over. Those who vote against everyday Americans — many of whom have voted for similar minimum wage increases in the past — are on the wrong side of history.

The Koch Brothers and the Puppets They Control:

The Koch brothers for decades operated in the shadows of American public life while pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into front groups promoting what Sen. Bernie Sanders has called the “billionaire agenda.” Now Republicans are trying to silence Koch brother critics like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

So what are the Republicans trying to hide? It’s not well known, but David Koch was the 1980 Libertarian Party candid...ate for vice president. He campaigned on a platform that called for abolishing taxes on the wealthy and profitable corporations, shutting down Medicare and Medicaid, repealing Social Security, putting the Postal Service out of business and doing away with the minimum wage.

“They want to repeal every major piece of legislation over the past 80 years that protects the middle class, the elderly, the children, the sick and the most vulnerable in our country,” Bernie said. Once Americans know what the Koch brothers stand for, Sanders told Ed Schultz on Wednesday, they will stand up to them and to “the puppets that they control.”

Koch brothers fact check:

Not that FACTS matter to some of the unfortunate Tea Baggers....

DSCC

If you ever thought that the Kochs’ attack ads weren’t full of egregious lies, take a look as the non-partisan Washington Post Fact Checker debunks some of their recent attacks against Democrats.

The most infuriating part? The race for the Senate is now a deadlocked tie after over $34 million in discredited attacks like these:

Claim in Koch Attack #1: “I found this wonderful doctor and a great health care plan. My insurance was canceled because of Obamacare. Now, the out-of-pocket costs are so high, it’s unaffordable. If I do not receive my medication, I will die.”

Washington Post Fact Check:
FACT #1: “[She] suggested she had lost her ‘wonderful doctor’ when in fact she could keep that doctor in the new plan.”
FACT #2 “Her premiums were cut in half, from $1,100 a month to $571.”

Lie Detector: “One cannot claim that a plan is ‘unaffordable’ when over the course of the year it will provide you with substantial savings.”

Claim in Koch Attack #2: “Our health insurance plan was canceled because of Obamacare...This new plan is not affordable at all. My husband is working a lot more hours just to pay for these new increases.”

Washington Post Fact Check:
FACT: “The family qualified for Medicaid, but she was opposed for philosophical issues… So the family opted for a more expensive plan”

Lie Detector: “It is [the family’s] right to choose a more expensive plan. But it makes her claim of ‘unaffordable’ harder to swallow.”

Claim in Koch Attack #3: “Health care isn’t about politics. It’s about people. And millions of people have lost their health insurance, millions of people can’t see their own doctors, and millions are paying more and getting less.”

Washington Post Fact Check:
FACT #1: Many have not lost their health insurance -- “Many [have been] rolled into new plans, and Obamacare has reduced the number of uninsured.”
FACT #2: People don’t lose doctors because of Obamacare -- “This was true before Obamacare; employers changed plans all the time.”
FACT #3: People aren’t getting less for more -- “Obamacare mandates many new benefits.”

Lie Detector: “Once again Americans for Prosperity makes sweeping claims about the health-care law that lack context or offer a misleading picture.”

Koch attacks have been proven false time and time again: Politifact just announced that "in 13 fact checks, Americans for Prosperity [the largest Koch group] has never received higher than a Half True,” with the majority of attacks graded “false or mostly false."

We can't stop the Kochs from spending millions on lies, but we can aggressively answer them with our own ads that tell the truth. We absolutely can’t let the Kochs’ enormous spending advantage lead to a Republican Senate takeover.

Will you pitch in $3 to our Emergency Media Campaign to answer the Kochs’ outrageous ads with the truth?

Thanks for your time and support,

Who are the Koch brothers and what do they want?

Having trouble viewing this email? Click here to read it online.

As a result of the disastrous Citizens United Supreme Court decision, billionaires and large corporations can now spend an unlimited amount of money to influence the political process. The results of that decision are clear. In the coming months and years the Koch brothers and other extraordinarily wealthy families will spend billions of dollars to elect right-wing candidates to the Senate, the House, governors’ mansions and the presidency of the United States. These billionaires already own much of our economy. That, apparently, is not enough. Now, they want to own the United States government as well.

Four years ago, the Supreme Court passed Citizens United. A few weeks ago, they passed the equally horrendous McCutcheon campaign finance decision which gives even more political power to the rich. Now, many Republicans want to push this Supreme Court to go even further. In the name of “free speech,” they want the Court to eliminate all restrictions on campaign spending -- a position that Justice Thomas supported in McCutcheon -- and a view supported by the Chairman of the Republican National Committee. Not surprisingly, as it will give them the opportunity to buy politicians at will, this has always been the position of the Koch brothers.

The Koch brothers are the second wealthiest family in America, making most of their money in the fossil fuel industry. According to Forbes Magazine, they saw their wealth increase last year from $68 billion to $80 billion. In other words, under the “anti-business”, “socialist” and “oppressive” Obama administration, their wealth went up by $12 billion in one year.

In their 2012 campaigns, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney each spent a little more than $1 billion. For the Koch brothers, spending more than Obama and Romney combined in an election would be a drop in the bucket. They would hardly miss the few billion spent.

Given the reality that the Koch brothers are now the most important and powerful players in American politics, it is important to know what they want and what their agenda is.

Interestingly and not widely known, David Koch ran as the Libertarian Party’s vice-presidential candidate in 1980. He believed that Ronald Reagan was much too liberal. Despite Mr. Koch putting a substantial sum of money into the campaign, his ticket only received one percent of the vote. Most Americans thought the Libertarian Party’s platform of 1980 was extremist and way out of touch with what the American people wanted and needed.

Fast-forward 34 years and the most significant reality of modern politics is how successful David Koch and like-minded billionaires have been in moving the Republican Party to the extreme right. Amazingly, much of what was considered “extremist” and “kooky” in 1980 has become part of today’s mainstream Republican thinking.

Let me give you just a few examples:

In 1980, Libertarian vice-presidential candidate David Koch ran on a platform that called for abolishing the minimum wage. 34 years ago, that was an extreme view of a fringe party that had the support of one percent of the American people.

Today, not only does virtually every Republican in Congress oppose raising the $7.25 an hour minimum wage, many of them, including Republican leaders like Mitch McConnell and John McCain, are on record for abolishing the concept of the federal minimum wage.

In 1980, the platform of David Koch’s Libertarian Party favored “the abolition of Medicare and Medicaid programs.” 34 years ago, that was an extreme view of a fringe party that had the support of one percent of the American people.

Today, the mainstream view of the Republican Party, as seen in the recently passed Ryan budget, is to end Medicare as we know it, cut Medicaid by more than $1.5 trillion over the next decade, and repeal the Affordable Care Act. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, “Under the Ryan plan, at least 40 million people -- 1 in 8 Americans -- would lose health insurance or fail to obtain insurance by 2024. Most of them would be people with low or moderate incomes.”

In 1980, the platform of David Koch’s Libertarian Party called for “the repeal of the fraudulent, virtually bankrupt, and increasingly oppressive Social Security system.” 34 years ago, that was an extreme view of a fringe party that had the support of one percent of the American people.

Today, the mainstream view of the Republican Party is that “entitlement reform” is absolutely necessary. For some, this means major cuts in Social Security. For others who believe Social Security is unconstitutional or a Ponzi scheme this means the privatization of Social Security or abolishing this program completely for those who are under 60 years of age.

In 1980, David Koch’s Libertarian Party platform stated “We oppose all personal and corporate income taxation, including capital gains taxes … We support the eventual repeal of all taxation … As an interim measure, all criminal and civil sanctions against tax evasion should be terminated immediately.” 34 years ago, that was an extreme view of a fringe party that had the support of one percent of the American people.

Today, 75 Republicans in the House have co-sponsored a bill that Paul Ryan has said “would eliminate taxes on wages, corporations, self-employment, capital gains, and gift and death taxes in favor of a personal-consumption tax.”

Here is what every American should be deeply concerned about. The Koch brothers, through the expenditure of billions of dollars and the creation and support of dozens of extreme right organizations, have taken fringe extremist ideas and made them mainstream within the Republican Party. And now with Citizens United (which is allowing them to pour unlimited sums of money into the political process) their power is greater than ever.

And let’s be very clear. Their goal is not only to defund Obamacare, cut Social Security, oppose an increase in the minimum wage or cut federal funding for education. Their world view and eventual goal is much greater than all of that. They want to repeal every major piece of legislation that has been signed into law over the past 80 years that has protected the middle class, the elderly, the children, the sick, and the most vulnerable in this country. Every piece of legislation!

The truth is that the agenda of the Koch brothers is to move this country from a democratic society with a strong middle class to an oligarchic form of society in which the economic and political life of the nation are controlled by a handful of billionaire families.

Our great nation must not be hijacked by right-wing billionaires like the Koch brothers.

For the sake of our children and our grandchildren, we must fight back.

Sincerely,
Bernie Sanders

'Scooter' Brown reveals Koch Puppetry

In Massachusetts, at least 'Scooter' Brown pretended to be bi-partisan, although his votes betrayed the pretense.

As he invades New Hampshire, the Koch Puppet is clearly revealed.

Brown about to launch a bid to return to the U.S. Senate

Koch brothers pour in $3/4 million to help him so far

Despite recent polls which show New Hampshire U.S. Senator Shaheen with a 13 point lead over him, the New York Times reports that former U.S. Senator Scott Brown is getting ready to announce another run for the U.S. Senate, but in New Hampshire instead of Massachusetts.

The newspaper goes on to say that he intends to open an exploratory committee and run this year for the Senate from New Hampshire to unseat U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a freshman Democrat who is seeking reelection this fall.

That's Joe Quigley's cartoon today on the right, see here.

The Union Leader reports Brown has given two large checks to the N.H. Republican party, $29,000 and $15,000, and is calling GOP activists in that state to gage their support.

Koch brothers at work

The Koch brother have already spent $700,000 on television ads against Ms. Shaheen. New Hampshire Democrats issued a statement late Thursday suggesting themes they would be using if Brown becomes a candidate.

A NH Democratic party statement said, “Scott Brown is for Scott Brown and the powerful interests that back him, not New Hampshire. New Hampshire isn’t going to let Scott Brown and his big oil buddies like the Koch brothers buy themselves a Senate seat.”

Pay Attention New Hampshire: "Scooter" Brown needs HELP!

The Koch Brothers Sock Puppet, 'Scooter Brown' needs help to invade New Hampshire!

Scott Brown Seek Staff For N.H. Senate Run

Former Massachusetts U.S. Sen. Scott Brown has begun seeking campaign staff while aggressively courting New Hampshire’s political elite, marking what local Republicans consider serious steps toward launching a Senate campaign against Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.

$#!^@#%!

As the Affordable Care Act is being implemented, a growing number of Americans are experiencing the protections provided, the cost reduction, the increased choices and the health care services available to them.

A small number of Republican Extremists, elected with the help of the Koch-roaches largesse are tone-deaf to public opinion. A small number of extremist states have erected roadblocks to deny residents the advantages.

The Koch-Roaches have spread lies about 'Obamacare' that most are simply ignoring because they recognize the lies.

SCOTUS has upheld 'Obamacare' and the bereft few can't accept reality.

GOP Takes Obamacare Meltdown To A Whole New Level

A mere seven days remain for Congress to pass a spending bill in order to avoid a government shutdown. But Republicans are farther away than ever from agreeing to a reasonable plan that would keep the government open.

On Friday, the House GOP continued its march toward shutdown by passing a bill that ties keeping the government open to–surprise!–fully defunding Obamacare. Once again, Republicans refuse to do the hard work of actual governing in favor of playing political games that threaten to sabotage the economy. But while the vote only solidified the GOP’s ideological and dangerous strategy, it opened the floodgates for more infighting among its owns members. Here is what a number of key GOP players and establishment thinkers have to say about the “defund at all costs” plan:
  • GOP Sen. John McCain (AZ): “I can tell you that in the U.S. Senate, we will not repeal or defund Obamacare. We will not. And to think we can is not rational.”
  • GOP Strategist Karl Rove: The GOP defunding strategy is “self-defeating…It is an ill-conceived tactic, and Republicans should reject it.”
  • Fox News Host Bill O’Reilly: Defunding Obamacare is “fanaticism on the right,” O’Reilly says. “There’s no way Obamacare is going to be defunded. It’s not gonna happen.”
  • GOP Sen. Tom Coburn (OK): “Tactics and strategies ought to be based on what the real world is, and we do not have the political power to do this.”
  • GOP Sen. Rand Paul (KY): “I’m acknowledging we can’t probably defeat or get rid of Obamacare.”
  • GOP Sen. Kelly Ayotte (NH): “I don’t believe they should shut down the government to [defund Obamacare], and I don’t think that is a strategy that is good for America.”
  • GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson (GA): “It’s total atrophy. We’re earning our 11 percent popularity. It’s easier to talk about Obamacare than the major sources of our problems.”
  • Wall Street Journal Editorial Board: “Kamikaze missions rarely turn out well, least of all for the pilots… The kamikazes could end up ensuring the return of all-Democratic rule.”
  • Now, they all may just be trying to protect their party’s interests. But they seem to know what most Americans already do: the extreme demands by the GOP to push a narrow ideological agenda are out of touch. A new bipartisan CNBC poll released today proves that point. Almost six in ten Americans oppose defunding the health care law if it means a government shutdown, while just 19 percent support. A poll released last week found that only 23 percent of Americans want to make the health care law fail.

BOTTOM LINE: Republicans’ political games are threatening our nation’s economic recovery. Americans don’t want to shut down the government and want an end to the hostage-taking political tactics that place ideology over practical solutions for stability and growth.

    This, That......

Every time you go to the polls, carry the picture of these two firmly in your mind. I have posted them before, but the entire world needs to know them intimately. David and Charles Koch have singlehandedly bankrolled the tea party, and all of the Republican obstructionism in the past 6 years. They don't want you to vote, they don't want you to have health care, and they don't want to pay a person a living wage. VOTE BLUE, and laugh at their picture, as your vote takes down their bought and paid for candidates.
Insensitive is insensitive, regardless of what you "open carry."

This is what we have to deal with, primarily in the Southern and Western States. This moronic mentality has been fueled by the tea baggers, who are funded by the Koch Brothers. WAKE UP, and lose the racist stupidity, America!!!

According to Ring of Fire Host Mike Papantonio:

“When they aren’t attacking the President’s healthcare plans or the Democrats’ efforts to increase the minimum ...wage, the Tea Party can be found engaging in vilest type of racism at all levels. This has been their go-to issue since the Koch brothers put ‘em together.”

Listen to the rest of Papantonio's comments here: http://bit.ly/16F7Dzv
    http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/08/10/19963142-this-week-in-god

Mike Huckabee, opportunist extraordinaire, psuedo Christian, because anyone who is really a Christian would not malign an entire religious group based on the actions and behavior of a fringe element. I guess the former governor has no recollection of our bloody Christian history, let alone his Christian brethren who who consistently show their bigotry and prejudice with regard to anyone who doesn't fall into lockstep with them. Huckabee is an example of the worst of the worst hypocrites. He lines his pockets with money on the backs of all those he debases.

PUSHING KOCH AGENDA AND THE DISMANTLING OF CLEAN ENERGY LAWS, ALEC MEETS RESISTANCE
The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is a corporate-funded organization that develops “model legislation” to be introduced by conservative legislators (mostly Republicans, some Democrats) across the country.

Historically , ALEC worked off radar. However, in recent years ALEC has been the subject of investigations and inquiries by media outlets across the country. The group was highlighted by the 2011 “ALEC Exposed” project of the Center for Media and Democracy and The Nation. It has also been the focus of a nationally-broadcast “United States of ALEC” documentary by Moyers & Company, and called out by groups such as Color of Change and Common Cause. As a result, it has been abandoned by 49 corporations (from Amazon.com to Wal-Mart) that once paid for its initiatives.
    ...
ALEC has been decried by labor, environmental and clean government groups in state capitols across the country. An organization that once held its annual meetings virtually unnoticed is now met with mass protests so large that streets around the meeting's hotel were closed.

This year ALEC decided to prioritize the dismantling of States’ renewable energy standards targeting States across the country. Their record? 0 for 13. In the states where ALEC and its members sought to repeal or weaken renewable energy standards or targets, not a single bill passed in 2013.

Yet, ALEC remains a defining force in statehouses across the country. A new report from the Center for Media and Democracy details the extent of the group’s ongoing engagement. CMD has identified 466 ALEC bills that were introduced in state legislatures during 2013 sessions. At least eighty-four of these measures have become law.
