MEMORIAL DAY

It's time to stop American Empire building.
The US has troops in too many nations, killing civilians, bombing nations to rubble and creating terrorists.

It's time to employ diplomacy rather than threats.

RSN: Michael Moore | We Need a National Holiday Dedicated to Peace

RSN: Michael Moore | We Need a National Holiday Dedicated to Peace

orty three years ago today (April 30, 1975), Vietnam defeated the United States in the Vietnam War. Every great philosopher from Jesus to Buddha to Thomas Jefferson has said you can only win when you are willing to admit your defeats & make amends for your mistakes. 58K American dead, — 9 from my high school, two from my street. 2M-4M SE Asians dead. Shame. Sorrow. We ask the Vietnamese for forgiveness. We should make this day a national holiday so that we never forget the consequences of our actions when we invade someone else’s country. Make this a holiday so that we forever remember that the Masters of War are always willing to sacrifice us for their greed. Make this a day committed to a Permanent Peace. April 30th — The U.S. Day of Peace. A necessary holiday.

Killing in YOUR Name

These are people...families...women and children....innocents caught in a fight for American Empire and ENERGY.

If Americans don't 'get it' the Middle East surely does.

US Coalition Killed 744 Iraqi, Syrian Civilians in June: Report

War monitoring group Airwars claims June was the second deadliest month for civilians in Iraq and Syria since the start of Coalition attacks in 2014.

t least 744 civilians were killed in strikes in Iraq and Syria last month by the U.S.-led Coalition fighting the Islamic State group, an independent organization said on Wednesday.
“Across Iraq and Syria, Airwars tracked a record 223 alleged Coalition casualty events during June, likely killing a minimum of between 529 and 744 civilians – a rise of 52 percent on May’s estimated totals,” the London-based group of researchers and journalists said.
“June was the second deadliest month for civilians in Iraq and Syria since the start of Coalition actions in August 2014,” according to the report.
The reported death toll is higher than that claimed by the U.S.-led Coalition.
In the monthly report released on Friday, the Coalition said its strikes had unintentionally killed at least 603 civilians between August 2014 and May 2017. The Coalition, battling to defeat Islamic State group militants in Iraq and Syria, claims it goes to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties.
The liberation operation of Mosul in Iraq officially came to an end on Monday when Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory in the city, three years after the Islamic State group seized it.
A top U.S. general in Iraq strongly rejected an Amnesty International report accusing the coalition of violating international law in the battle for Mosul.
"I reject any notion that coalition fires were in any way imprecise, unlawful or excessively targeted civilians," Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend told a news briefing in Washington.
He added that he believed the fight against the Islamic State group was the "most precise campaign in the history of warfare."
Operations are still underway from various fronts to liberate the city of Raqqa in Syria.
The United Nations has raised concern about the situation of up to 50,000 civilians who remain trapped in the region.
“Availability of food, water, medicine, electricity and other essentials has been dwindling, with the situation rapidly deteriorating,” U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees spokesman Andrej Mahecic said in Geneva.
"It is imperative that trapped civilians are able to secure safe passage out — to reach safety, shelter and protection."

The Israeli Right Is Terrified of Peace — And Their Jerusalem Bill Proves It

CounterCurrents: We have small victory to celebrate today

Dear Friend,

We have a small victory to celebrate today! In yesterday's headlining article I had called upon Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan to stand up and take the lead in the campaign against the dictatorial order of the Central Government to ban the sale of cattle for slaughter that will push millions of, already impoverished farmers to suicide in India. The second demand in the article asked Kerala Chief Minister to call a meeting of all CMs. The article was widely shared among political circles. Today's Kerala cabinet meeting has decided to call such a meeting! It's a welcome first step to resist the illegal 'beef ban'. We have a long way to go.

If you don't mind, and if you think the content of this news letter is critical for the dignified living and survival of humanity and other species on earth, please forward it to your friends and spread the word. It's time for humanity to come together as one family! You can subscribe to our news letter here http://www.countercurrents.org/news-letter/.

Time For Left And Secular Forces To Step Forward To Fight Fascism In India
by K P Sasi

Since the public dissent against the banning of beef is taking place strongly in Kerala, it is the responsibility of the Kerala Government to convene a meeting of the representatives of all six states which are against the ban of beef. There is a need for common actions irrespective of political differences on this issue, keeping the interests of the farmers as well as consumers. It should also to be brought to the notice of the Central Government that the stake holders are not just the State Governments but also people in general. Therefore, imposition of such a notification without proper public discussion must be opposed tooth and nail.

French Media Hail Macron’s Moves Away From US Anti-Russian Policies
by Alex Lantier

Yesterday, French media applauded newly elected President Emmanuel Macron’s summit Monday in Versailles with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This enthusiasm was all the more significant as the newspapers made little effort to hide the fact that Macron was shifting towards Moscow despite Washington’s open hostility to Russia.

Forrest Donations And False Charity
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

It is easy to sneer, and availing oneself of this chance, let’s. The celebratory guff floating on the media glow of mining magnate Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest for giving away $400 million to charitable pursuits is reminiscent to that of Mark Zuckerberg.  At least he did not dig up the earth in the process.

Fortress Europe; The Rise Of Fascism And Racism In The Netherlands
by Thomas C Mountain

A few days ago I returned from Veldhoven, The Netherlands, where last April 13 in a breathtakingly fascist act of racism the Mayor of this small Dutch town deported over 600 Eritrean youth attending a conference, kicked out of their hotel and forced to leave the city in the middle of the night.

Peace Is The Plot
by Prof Shah Alam Khan

If you love peace, you need to see the channel Republic. You can’t always wait for peace. At times, you have to earn it. Fish it out of the madness which surrounds you all the time. There can be no two opinions on peace, just like you can’t have two suns or two moons. But peace is not about suns and moons. It’s not even about the rainbows which accompany the dark clouds.

Brutal Attack On Students In Banaras

CPDR expresses its deep concern over the brutality with which students’ expressions of dissent are being suppressed across the country. On 27 May, the UP police used brute force against students who were holding a protest at the gate of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) against the violent attacks on the Dalits of Saharanpur.

Help Was Not on the Way

By Marc Ash, Reader Supported News
30 May 17

hile campaigning for the presidency in 2000, George W. Bush rallied a raucous assembly of U.S. service members with his vision for a revitalization of the military. Bush cited low morale, caused by poor funding and neglect in the Clinton years, as an affront to all armed services, something he as president would not abide. “Help is on the way!” he bellowed, and the soldiers roared their approval.
Help was not in fact on the way. On the way was a return to Vietnam era, war-for-profit thinking. Invade first and manufacture a rationale later was the order of yet another day for a bellicose American president and, once again, a Congress unified in their obedience.
It’s become fashionable in Washington to describe the invasion of Iraq as a “mistake.” It was no mistake. It was a carefully planned-in-advance military extravaganza that enriched defense contractors astronomically and has cost the American taxpayer at least 3 trillion dollars, and perhaps double that.
The cost to the men and women who fought the war was greater. Death, disability, and PTSD are as common for Iraq War veterans as they were for those returning from Vietnam. Again, the result was the same: nothing gained in the face of unspeakable loss. The cost to the Iraqi people was, just as it had been to the Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Laotian people forty years earlier, bearing the weight of an apocalyptic crime against them and all humanity.
Perhaps the greatest insult to those who have served their country is using Memorial Day to sell war itself. The corporate media machine is only too willing to glorify militarism on a day set aside to commemorate sacrifice.
There can be only one true memorial to war — peace.

CounterCurrents: Shimon Peres From The Perspective Of His Victims, Indian And Pakistani Citizens Speak Out Against War, Gandhi And The Message Of Nonviolence

Please subscribe to and support INDEPENDENT MEDIA when you find it helpful.

Dear Friend,

Nuclear armed neighbours, India and Pakistan are trading live ammunition and hot words on either side of the border.  Who pay the price? The people! Evacuation has started in Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab border. Helpless people are leaving their dear homes and homestead and running for safety. Who will feed the animals left behind? Who will tend the farms left behind? If only it ended there!

It's time for saner people to step in. We the commoners have to raise the voice and say, enough is enough. Ordinary people from India and Pakistan and all around the world are signing a petition calling on the leaders  to end the tension. It's time to speak out for peace. Please come forward and sign the petition herehttp://www.countercurrents.org/2016/09/30/indian-and-pakistani-citizens-speak-out-against-war/

Israeli war criminal politician Shimon Peres passed away the other day. We've two obituaries one from the point of the victims of Peres's wars of aggression and another from Dr. Ludwig Watzal of Germany.

President Obama faced a humiliating defeat while defending the House of Sauds. US Congress overturned President Obama’s veto of legislation that would permit victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks and their families to sue Saudi Arabia. Now the action moves to US Courts where the skeletons of 9/11 will, hopefully, come tumbling down.

"The Common Heritage Of Mankind" is a bold doctrine in International Law. It envisages that some localities belong to all humanity and that their resources are available for everyone’s use and benefit. This doctrine has been enshrined in the laws of high seas and the Moon. Why isn't it  extended to protect all our Common Heritage? CHM is a bold ethical concept, and a general concept of international law, but it's kept within strict boundaries. These boundaries must be broken to protect our common heritage for our future generations.

And also more stories from around the world.

Congress Overrides Obama Veto Of Bill Allowing 9/11 Lawsuits
by Tom Carter

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/09/30/congress-overrides-obama-veto-of-bill-allowing-911-lawsuits/

On Wednesday, the US Congress overturned President Obama’s veto of legislation that would permit victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks and their families to sue Saudi Arabia. Declassified documents released this year confirm the involvement of Saudi intelligence agents in the funding, organization, and planning of the attacks—facts which were covered up for years by the Bush and Obama administrations.

Suing Saudi Arabia: Overturning Sovereign Immunity In US Courts
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/09/30/suing-saudi-arabia-overturning-sovereign-immunity-in-us-courts/

It was momentous on one fundamental level. Here was the President of the United States, Barack Obama, holding the torch for a wretched ally the politicians on the Hill and others have had reservations over for many years.  Saudi Arabia, ever the thorn and asset of US interests, facing the grief of families who lost members on September 11, 2001.  This, the same ally whose theocratic bent remains the most bruising of obstacles in any claims that the US is open to a global democratic experiment.

Shimon Peres From The Perspective Of His Victims
by Ilan Pappe

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/09/30/shimon-peres-from-the-perspective-of-his-victims/

Shimon Peres  occupied many positions in politics that had immense impact on the Palestinians wherever they are. He was director general of the Israeli defense ministry, minister of defense, minister for development of the Galilee and the Negev (Naqab), prime minister and president. In all these roles, the decisions he took and the policies he pursued contributed to the destruction of the Palestinian people and did nothing to advance the cause of peace and reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis.

Shimon Peres – Obituary Of A “Peace Politician”
by Dr Ludwig Watzal

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/09/30/shimon-peres-obituary-of-a-peace-politician/

In obituaries, only good and beautiful things are written about the deceased. May mine only serve to complete the picture of a man who authentically personified Zionism.

The Common Heritage Of Mankind: A Bold Doctrine Kept Within Strict Boundaries
by Prue Taylor

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/09/30/the-common-heritage-of-mankind-a-bold-doctrine-kept-within-strict-boundaries/

The “common heritage of mankind” is an ethical concept and a general concept of international law. It establishes that some localities belong to all humanity and that their resources are available for everyone’s use and benefit, taking into account future generations and the needs of developing countries. It is intended to achieve aspects of the sustainable development of common spaces and their resources, but may apply beyond this traditional scope.

What It’s Like To Be A Muslim Australian
by Ghali Hassan

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/09/30/what-its-like-to-be-a-muslim-australian/

A recent Essential Research poll had found 49 per cent of Australians support a ban on Muslim immigration, including 60 per cent of Liberal-National Coalition voters, 40 per cent of Labor voters and 34 per cent of Greens voters agreed with the proposition that Muslim Australians were not integrating (assimilating) into “Australian culture” and pose a threat to Australia. It is the result of a steady diet of fear, and xenophobia fed to Australians by openly racist politicians and the mass media.

A Simple Solution For Kashmir
by Akhter Bhat

http://www.countercurrents.org/2016/09/30/a-simple-solution-for-kashmir/

So, don’t you think it has become imperative for India as well to look for an immediate solution for Kashmir? Then what is India waiting for? Why not start the process of solution finding now?  For Kashmiris , I think the best thing to do at the moment would be to stop fighting the forces with stones. Kashmir has lost enough of Rasheeds and Tawseefs and can’t afford losing more. Kashmir has got enough of Inshas blinded and simply can’t afford more.  They should immediately stop banging their heads into the walls so that no more heads are crushed. However, it is for the leaders of Kashmir, both from mainstream and separatist league to unite and press India for an ever lasting solution for Kashmir.
