An article by CommonWealth Magazine reports that our Super PAC disclosure bill might not pass in time to cover the Massachusetts governor's race. The result: a flood of dark money in our elections.
That is unacceptable! Massachusetts voters deserve to know who is spending money to influence their votes. And candidates deserve to know who is spending money against them.
Write your legislators today urging them to pass the disclosure bill now.
During our last governor’s race in 2010, Super PACs and other shadowy outside groups spent $12 million to influence the outcome. A mere 4% of their donors were disclosed. Now, after four years under the Citizens United regime, these outside groups are even more sophisticated and ready to drop millions more in 2014.
Five new Super PACs have recently filed statements of organization to influence elections this year with names as vague as “Mass” and mission statements as vague as "communicate with voters about gubernatorial candidates." Unless we update the law, we may not know the special interests behind these shadowy organizations until just before the election.
The time to put a stop to this insanity is now. Tell your state legislators to shine a light on dark money in our elections before it's too late.
Sincerely,
Pam Wilmot
