Malaysia Airlines Flight 370: Ticket purchase adds to mystery 09 Mar 2014 Two people who traveled on the missing Malaysian Airlines flight under the passports of an Italian and an Austrian citizen appear to have bought their tickets together. The tickets were bought from China Southern Airlines in Thai baht at identical prices, according to China's official e-ticket verification system Travelsky. The ticket numbers are contiguous, which indicates the tickets were issued together.

Defense Radar Detected Possible Turn-Back of Missing Malaysian Jet 09 Mar 2014 Malaysia's defense force radar detected that the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 may have "turned back" from its original course, the nation's air force chief said on Sunday. "There is a possible indication that the aircraft made a turn back. It is in some part corroborated by civilian radar," Gen. Rodzali Daud told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

Was it a terror attack? Two people aboard disappeared Boeing 777 were traveling on STOLEN PASSPORTS 08 Mar 2014 An American national working for IBM in Malaysia has been identified as one of the passengers traveling aboard the Malaysian Airlines plane that vanished off the coast of Vietnam as new information concerning stolen passports has raised fears that it may have been an act of terror. Philip Wood, 51, was identified as the only adult passenger traveling on a U.S. passport on Flight MH307. Earlier today, two oil slicks were spotted by the Vietnamese air force earlier today, as the major search and rescue operation was launched when the aircraft disappeared shortly after losing contact with air traffic controllers.

Two Listed on Missing Jet Had Passports Stolen, Were Not on Plane 08 Mar 2014 Two people listed as passengers on the missing Malaysia Airlines jet were not on the plane and had their passports stolen, according to foreign governments and one relative. Luigi Maraldi, 37, was the only Italian on a passenger manifest released by the airline after the jet disappeared over the South China Sea. An Austrian was also on the passenger manifest, but Reuters and The Associated Press both quoted the Austrian foreign ministry as saying that he was safe in Austria. The ministry said that his passport was also stolen.

FBI sending team of agents to Malaysia to support investigation into missing jetliner 08 Mar 2014 The FBI is sending a team of agents to Malaysia to support the investigation into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Because of the Americans aboard the flight, the FBI has offered to send a team of agents to Malaysia to support the investigation into the disappearance if asked, a U.S. official familiar with the issue told CNN on condition of anonymity. Earlier, an official had said FBI agents were heading to the area. The FBI is not ruling out terrorism or any other issue as a possible cause in the jetliner's disappearance, the official said.

Crimea hopeful of referendum, ready to join Russia 'by end March' 08 Mar 2014 Crimea has fast-tracked preparations for the republic's referendum and for its possible joining with Russia, statements from the autonomy's leaders reveal. Though no decision has been made by Moscow, they say Crimea may be part of Russia by late March. Earlier on Friday, Grigory Ioffe, first deputy chair of the region's parliament, stressed that the "historic" referendum will be "very democratic and open" and will be held "in full compliance" with both the Ukrainian constitution and the international treaties that Ukraine had adopted.

Obama knew CIA secretly monitored intelligence committee, senator claims --White House declines to comment after Mark Udall says agency spied on staffers preparing scathing report into CIA torture after 9/11 05 Mar 2014 A leading US senator has said that President Obama knew of an "unprecedented action" taken by the CIA against the Senate intelligence committee, which has apparently prompted an inspector general's inquiry at Langley. The subtle reference in a Tuesday letter from Senator Mark Udall to Obama, seeking to enlist the president's help in declassifying a 6,300-page inquiry by the committee into torture carried out by CIA interrogators after 9/11, threatens to plunge the White House into a battle between the agency and its Senate overseers. McClatchy and the New York Times reported Wednesday that the CIA had secretly monitored computers used by committee staffers preparing the inquiry report, which is said to be scathing not only about the brutality and ineffectiveness of the agency's interrogation techniques but deception by the CIA to Congress and policymakers about it.

Thousands protest ahead of Fukushima anniversary 09 Mar 2014 Banging on drums and waving "Sayonara nukes" signs, thousands of people rallied in a Tokyo park and marched to Parliament Sunday to demand an end to nuclear power ahead of the third anniversary of the [ongoing] Fukushima disaster. Participants at the demonstration, one of several planned across cities in Japan, said they would never forget the March 11, 2011, nuclear disaster, the worst since Chernobyl. They also vowed to block a move by the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to restart some of the 48 idled reactors and backpedal on the commitment by the previous government to aggressively reduce the nation's reliance on nuclear power.

Rand Paul Wins Conservative Straw Poll 08 Mar 2014 (MD) Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, won a presidential straw poll at a prominent conservative conference here on Saturday, capturing 31 percent of the vote among no fewer than 10 potential candidates. The straw poll, conducted at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, is hardly predictive of future presidential success. But the win by the younger Mr. Paul, a first-term senator, reflected the enthusiastic reception he has received at the three-day conference.

Chris Matthews Refers to CPAC as 'Crazy Car' 07 Mar 2014 "Hardball" host Chris Matthews has poured scorn on the Conservative Political Action Conference, calling it a "whole tapestry of weirdness" attended by a "crazy car" filled with Sens. Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Marco Rubio. The MSNBC broadcaster compared CPAC's annual conference to the bar scene in the classic movie "Stars Wars," which he said was full of "wild-eyed creatures from every part of the solar system." "Well, today here in Washington, the whole tapestry of weirdness was reenacted at the annual convention of something called CPAC." he said on his political talk show. "...It was pure Koch brothers' populism being sold out there today, words and phrases crafted to heat up the peanut gallery, translating to cold cash for the oil patch billionaires who approved the script."

Dems slam Darrell Issa in resolution 07 Mar 2014 House Democrats offered a motion on Thursday slamming Rep. Darrell Issa for cutting off Democrats during a hearing on Wednesday, their latest political assault on the controversial [alleged arsonist/insurance swindler] California Republican. Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio), chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, offered the privileged resolution targeting Issa. "The House of Representatives strongly condemns the offensive and disrespectful manner in which Chairman Darrell E. Issa conducted the hearing," the text of the resolution reads. The resolution was killed by Republicans who voted to table the motion - in effect set it aside - by a 211 to 186 vote. Ten lawmakers voted present.
