On Eve Of Election, Ukraine Slides Toward Civil War
By Bill Van Auken

http://www.countercurrents.org/auken230514.htm

Ukrainian armed forces early Thursday suffered their worst losses since launching a military crackdown last month against civilian populations opposing Kiev’s coup regime in eastern and southern Ukraine. An attack on a pro-regime roadblock near the town of Volnovakha, about 20 miles south of the city of Donetsk, left 16 soldiers dead and at least 30 more wounded, a number of them gravely. The bloody fighting came just three days before the Kiev regime is to stage presidential elections designed to legitimize the Western-backed coup that ousted Ukraine’s elected President Viktor Yanukovych last February

India Needs $834 Billion To Implement Low Carbon Growth Plans
By Ed King

http://www.countercurrents.org/king230514.htm

India will need to invest US$ 834 billion to place its economy on a low carbon trajectory by 2030, a report published in April by the national Planning Commission reveals. It says the country will require “massive” changes to the energy mix to lower the carbon intensity per unit of GDP by 42%, as opposed to 22%, which is its ‘business as usual' scenario

Global Crisis On Torture
By Amnesty International

http://www.countercurrents.org/ai230514.htm

Amnesty International has accused governments around the world of betraying their commitments to stamp out torture, three decades after the ground-breaking Convention Against Torture was adopted by the UN in 1984

Adam Smith Revisited
By David Anderson

http://www.countercurrents.org/anderson230514.htm

Unsustainable resource exploitation is stretching the ecological carrying capacity of our planet; all exacerbated by rapid technological advancement, expansion of human population and economic stratification dividing the rich from those below them. Our Biosphere is under severe strain. Temperatures will soon rise faster than we can imagine. Once the heat extremes have begun, we will not be able to stop them. Then there will be no second chance to return to normalcy

The Social Cost of GMOs
By Paul Craig Roberts

http://www.countercurrents.org/roberts230514.htm

Monsanto has reduced the measured cost of food production by producing genetically modified seeds that result in plants that are pest and herbicide resistant. The result is increased yields and lower measured costs of production. However, there is evidence that the social or external costs of this approach to farming more than offsets the lower measured cost. For example, there are toxic affects on microorganisms in the soil, a decline in soil fertility and nutritional value of food, and animal and human infertility

USA Needs Help To Begin Long Journey Towards Democracy And Credibility
By Robert Barsocchini

http://www.countercurrents.org/barsocchini230514.htm

With the USA polling as the greatest threat to world peace and no competitor coming close, the journey towards credibility and democracy will be difficult, but, with hard word and dedication from the international community, the USA will one day be in a position to begin

The ‘Revolutionary’ Face Of the Syrian conflict
By Nicola Nasser

http://www.countercurrents.org/nasser230514.htm

Reports are abound by international organizations about the responsibility of the Syrian government for the human rights violations in the ongoing conflict in Syria, now in its fourth year, but the responsibility of the insurgents has been kept away from media spotlight for political reasons. However, the horrible image of the “revolutionary” performance imposed itself on the media and public opinion to an extent that it has become impossible to black it out anymore

When Enough is Enough, Rise up People of Ethiopia
By Graham Peebles

http://www.countercurrents.org/peebles230514.htm

There are tentative signs that the people of Ethiopia are beginning to organise themselves and stand up against the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) government, a brutal dictatorship, albeit one dressed in democratic western garb

Change The Mainstream Media!
By Tim Gatto

http://www.countercurrents.org/gatto230514.htm

If people that are aware of the garbage spewing forth on mainstream media decided to write to these outlets and demand real news instead of "news for entertainment" we could actually make a difference. There are more and more people each day reaching out to the alternative media each day to get their news. This is not enough. Every American deserves the truth. In reality it is up to those that understand what is going on to change the paradigm. We must make them change the way they deliver the news

Modi’s Rise: Politics And Caste Conversion
By Gouthama Siddarthan

http://www.countercurrents.org/siddarthan230514.htm

A recent tweet by Subramanian Swamy has created a big controversy. “With the authorities vested in me I hereby appoint Namo as a Brahmin since he has Brahminical gunas (qualities)”. We cannot ignore this as his usual clownish talks. It is the Indian history of the Brahminical authoritarianism of two millennia. It is a historical replay

A Stolen Verdict
By Nirmalangshu Mukherji

http://www.countercurrents.org/mukherji230514.htm

The total electorate is 810 million. Since 66.3% of this electorate voted in the elections, the actual number who voted is 541 million. At 31%, BJP won roughly 165 million votes. In other words, in the general population, over 1000 million or 1 billion people or 86% did not vote for BJP. Even among the registered electorate, nearly 650 million or 80% did not vote for BJP. This government is the most unrepresentative of all governments in post-Independent India

You Know Who Is Planning to Kill Your Family, Yet You Don’t ...
By Jay Janson

http://www.countercurrents.org/janson230514.htm

Article speaks to a typical nation-family presently in the sights of the speculating interest banking industry of the plundering self-anointed ‘International Community,’ formerly similarly self-euphenized as ‘The Free World’ and for centuries known as ‘The Colonial Powers’. It asks why their spokespersons fail to call for prosecution of the Neocolonial Powers’ so blatantly self-indicted in heinous crimes against humanity
