SUV smashes into Spring Valley library, pins teen inside

The driver, said to be a man in his late 50s to early 60s, told police mechanical trouble caused him to lose control of his Toyota RAV4 before striking the girl, who was pinned beneath the SUV inside the building, police said.

"What the driver is saying is that he believes a recall on the car may have had something to do with this as far as the mechanical failure on the vehicle," Bosworth said. "We're going to look at all aspects of that."

SUV slams into Spring Valley, N.Y. library, injures at least 6 people

At least six people were hurt after a man lost control of his SUV, smashing the vehicle into the front lobby of the Spring Valley, N.Y. public library Tuesday evening.

The Finkelstein Memorial Library was still open just before 8 p.m. when a man in his 60s driving a Toyota RAV4 careened across the sidewalk, striking and pinning a 15-year-old girl and hitting four other pedestrians before slamming through the glass doors of the building along Route 59, according to The Journal News.

"It went through the pillars outside the building and came in through the foyer, coming to rest inside the library lobby area," Spring Valley police Lt. Jack Bosworth told the newspaper.

None of the injuries, in an upstate town just across the Tappan Zee Bridge, appeared life-threatening, fire officials told The Journal News.
The driver appeared sober, cops told the newspaper, and the crash may have been due to mechanical issues with the vehicle.
"I heard the car crash and saw everybody running," Joseph Duque, 12, told the newspaper. "I saw a lady with blood (on her face)."

The black Toyota never touched the actual building, but appears to have smashed directly through sliding glass doors in the front entrance.

The building is closed because the wreck exposed wires, the paper reported. The library is expected to be closed Wednesday but could reopen Thursday.

The crash cause remains under investigation.
