MIDDLEBORO – Taxpayers dodged a $12.1 million bullet and voted down a temporary override at Saturday’s special election, voting 645 against and 378 in favor.
Voters balked at the measure to fund an expansion and renovations to the historic police station.
Selectmen Chairman Allin J. Frawley was surprised the debt exclusion was rejected and said “I don’t know,” when asked what is the next step, now that the measure has failed.
Middleboro voters are not completely opposed to raising taxes to fund building projects. In 1997 they passed a temporary tax override to cover a $4.4 million bond for a new middle school.
Voter turnout was 6.4 percent.
