SNOW 1664 Lubec
With all the heartbreaking stories of lead-poisoned eagles in December, we hesitated to share the story of this Snowy Owl, but feel it's important to share because of the suspected cause of his death.
The owl was found on the ground in a cemetery in Lubec on December 11. He arrived at Avian Haven thin but uninjured. His blood work was alarming: the packed cell volume, which is the percentage of red blood cells, was only 12%, whereas a healthy range is 40 – 50%. We suspected secondary rodenticide exposure and immediately started the owl on medications to help reduce internal blood loss and facilitate blood-building. Despite our best supportive care, he died the following day. Our necropsy was inconclusive, but our best guess is still a rodenticide exposure.
There is good information at this website about safe rodent control:http://saferodentcontrol.org/site/
