Greetings!
SAVORING SUMMER WHILE COUNTING DOWN TO THE 8TH ANNUAL FALL FUNDRAISR EXTRAVAGANZA!

Pictured here, two of Foster Parrots' spectacular, green winged macaws venture into their outdoor aviary and welcome the sun after one of New England's coldest and most snow covered winters in recorded history! With so much development going on at the sanctuary this year and our annual Fall Fundraiser Extravaganza just around the corner, taking the time to slow down enough to really taste the long, hot days of summer will be a challenge - but we're excited as we march head-long into what will prove to be one of The New England Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary's most transformative years! So sit back in the shade with your lemonade and your July 2015 NEEWSletter, and savor the warmth of the summer sun as you read. Our summer edition puts a spotlight on Foster Parrots' Conservation partnerships, on our ambitious summer transformation projects - and, of course, on our Fall Fundraiser, which takes place this year on September 19th!!
mmmmm, sunshine!

Excuse Our Appearance...

Recently adopted Baby with her new lifetime companion Oliver!
We have officially shaken off the winter doldrums and launched ourselves into another exciting and formative year. This challenging winter offered all of us at Foster Parrots the opportunity to reflect upon the increasing demands of the sanctuary and assess our ability to meet our own high standards in accommodating the needs of our birds. The result was a strategic restructuring plan that will vastly improve operations as well as the lives of our sanctuary birds. While we are energized by the changes that will be talking place over the next year, we fear it will be necessary to formally initiate an 18-month moratorium on intakes of new birds into the sanctuary. As it stands we currently offer permanent sanctuary to over 400 parrots, with an increasing aging and special needs population. We have made a lifetime commitment to each and every animal we bring in and we must continue to uphold the highest quality of care that we can offer. The decision to put a temporary hold on new birds entering the sanctuary was made with careful consideration and we will use the next 18 months to focus on an organizational restructure to streamline our animal care process as well as address necessary structural updates of the sanctuary.

Creating A Hummingbird Oasis In Your Garden

By Barbara Moscato, photo by Brian Jones
Summer in New England is here and it's a great time to enhance your garden, patio or deck to attract hummingbirds. Our Ruby throated hummingbirds (the East's only breeding hummingbird) arrive here in Connecticut by the first week of May. Fascinating birds, they begin their trek north weighing approximately 6 grams and weigh as little as 2.5 grams after migrating thousands of miles each spring. Their heart rate ranges from 250 beats per minute at rest to 1250 beats per minute while feeding. To track their spring arrival and even report your own hummingbird sightings you can visit http://www.hummingbirds.net/map to see where they are in their migration progress each year.

Loneliness & The Pet Parrot
"Shrinking in a corner, pressed into the wall, do they know I'm present, am I here at all?"
It was one of the greatest myths of the pet trade and possibly one of the most tragic untruths of all: that parrots should be kept as single pets in order to maintain the bond between the human and the bird. A tactic designed to forge an animal's emotional dependency on human companionship; this might be acceptable on some level if a human could be depended upon as an adequate companion to parrots,
