MALEFICENT - A1057951 - Manhattan - Publicly Adoptable
TO BE DESTROYED 11/19/15 A volunteer writes: Her amber eyes are two flames illuminating Maleficent’s greying face. Beside her bright and red lush coat, they are the first thing I see looking at her. Maleficent is quite a pleasant gal, so ready to go out and be in company when I show up at her door. She just arrived at the care center and is willing to make friends right from the start. She is used to us humans and follows me to the street first, then into the yard. Despite some slightly weak hinds, Maleficent is a good walker and climbs stairs nicely. She does her business at once as we hit the street. She nears uneventfully other dogs. She will most likely have her chance at meeting her peers in playgroup. Maleficent can sit on command and of course for treats that she loves… most older dogs like to eat. A big smile comes on her face. She still has decent teeth and chomps heartily. Maleficent comes when called and as we are now officially friends (dry lung treats helping), she sits by my side, accepting caresses and blessing me with her beautiful smile. Maleficent is an elderly lady who came to us with no history. Who needs history when the future lays right ahead of us? Maleficent is a plain good girl, not a spring chick, sure, but a really nice dog who still has in her to make an owner happy. If you love older dogs, are compassionate and patient, Maleficent might be the right pooch for you. Come and meet this lovely dame at the Manhattan Care Center and make her yours. Another volunteer writes: This elegant lady is about as far from the Mistress of All Evil as you can get — the name does not suit her! She’s definitely a queen but not an evil one. Mal is a mature lady with the spirit of a much younger pup. Trotting out to the park — seriously, she has quite the pep in her step — she seemed at ease encountering people and other dogs. Although found as a stray, Mal has great leash skills and a general calm demeanor. Mal would make a great addition to your home if you like to get out for a couple of short walks a day but also like to chill out on the couch. Mal’s life hasn’t been a fairy tale up until now, but she is looking for her happy ending. For her, that would be a comfy bed and lots of treats. Will you be her Prince or Princess Charming?

MARY J - A1057469 - Brooklyn - Publicly Adoptable
TO BE DESTROYED 11/19/15
A volunteer writes: It shouldn’t surprise you to hear that food is the way to Mary J’s heart. Weighing in at about 75 pounds, it’s safe to say she’s a bit overweight. But Mary J’s motto must be “Go big or go home.” She has no shame about begging for food (but in an adorable, not too pushy kind of way!), eats the dry biscuits that the last three dogs I had out turned their noses at, and once she knew where my treats were, she even tried to steal some snacks when I wasn’t looking. But Mary J knows she has to work for her food with me, and she follows me around the yard, pleading for me to ask her to sit, because she knows what will shortly follow. Since she’s a bit… rotund… Mary J is always panting, giving her the cutest, silliest, widest smile in town providing a contrast to her once golden muzzle, now turning white from age, that gives her the air of sensibility and intelligence. Having previously lived with the same family since she was 3 weeks old, she is described as “obedient,” “loyal,” and “very loving.” She has lived with children, a large dog (though sometimes big dogs make her nervous), is friendly with small dogs, housetrained, doesn’t have any guarding issues and is the ideal housemate! And in her former home, when Mary J used to get the munchies, her family would spoil her with chicken or lamb! Come to the Brooklyn Care Center and ask to meet Mary J today–I promise you don’t have to have treats that are too fancy to win her over, a milkbone will do just fine!

RED - A1056966 - Manhattan - Rescue Only
TO BE DESTROYED 11/19/15 RESCUE ONLY!!! Poor Red could really use a friend right about now. He has been waiting patiently at the shelter for about 2 weeks. He has watched other dogs come and go and must be wondering why he is never the one to be picked. He can be a bit excitable around other dogs but otherwise he did very well on his behavioral evaluation. He needs someone savvy who will take the time to allow him to decompress and make friends at his own pace. He has caught the shelter cold and that is all the excuse the shelter needs to kill this very sweet boy tomorrow. He loves people and just wants to be your friend – won’t you be his? Please advocate strongly for Red tonight. Don’t let tonight be his last. Contact rescues or the help desk at helpdogs@urgentpodr.org to save Red. Please hurry – time is short

FORREST - A1056618 - Brooklyn - Publicly Adoptable
TO BE DESTROYED 11/19/15
** HANDSOME HUNK ** The mysteries of the forest are are a big theme in fairy tales. How about helping us tell a story of a stray Pitty named Forrest ? This seventy one pound hunky brindle boy was brought to the ACC of NYC. He was cooperative for his medical exam. Cooperative will get you a smiley in a kindergarten report card, but how it plays out in a big city shelter is a different story. The shelter has listed Forrest to be destroyed tomorrow. Forrest needs his own fairy tale to play out with a happy ending. Time is short with a noon deadline looming, so we must share with might and find a happy ending. The right foster or adopter can make a happily ever after come true. Dream big and share – a young dog’s life is at stake.
