This & that.....

America is faced with two presumptive presidential candidates who are strongly disliked by large percentages of Americans – but one disliked far more than the other. In a new Washington Post-ABC News survey, Hillary Clinton is viewed favorably by just 43 percent of the public and unfavorably by 55 percent. Donald Trump is viewed favorably by 29 percent, and unfavorably by 70 percent. A majority of adults — 56 percent — say they have a strongly unfavorable view of Trump. That includes one-fifth of Republicans. (By way of comparison, Obama’s favorability rating among his own party members in 2012 was 33 percentage points above Ms. Clinton’s now; Mitt Romney’s ratings among Republicans were 19 percentage points above Trump’s.)

The average of six recent head-to-head polls gives Clinton a lead of almost six percentage points over Trump. But she's not approaching 50 percent in any of these polls. With one exception, she's below 45 percent. But Trump has not broken 40 percent in any of the polls. Overall, a significant percentage of the population remains undecided.

It would be a sad irony if the 2016 election were remembered mainly not for the surging optimism and idealism of Bernie’s campaign but for the dislike and distrust engendered by the two final nominees -- and if it were decided on the basis of who America disliked least.
