Breaking: At least 73 dead and shots fired as lorry RAMS into crowd celebrating Bastille Day in Nice leaving bodies strewn across the road in suspected Terror attack --Anti-terror police swooped in as the city was put on lockdown and residents were warned to stay indoors | 14 July 2016 | At least 73 people are dead and more than 150 injured after they were mown down by a truck in a suspected terror attack during the Bastille Day celebrations in the French city of Nice. Eyewitnesses say there was an exchange of gunfire in the aftermath of the incident before the driver was shot dead. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to unconfirmed reports in the French media. Guns and grenades were later said to have been found inside the truck, which mounted the pavement at approximately 40mph and steered directly towards hundreds of people watching a fireworks display. Gunshots rang out in the streets, with gunmen targeting hotels and cafes in the port city in the south of France.

Trump had planned to hold his first event with his yet-to-be-announced running mate Friday morning in New York. He announced the change of plans on Twitter...Indiana Gov. Mike Pence had emerged as a late favorite for the job, though Trump advisers cautioned that the businessman had not made a final decision and could still change his mind.

Mike Pence as VP running mate, confirms campaign source | 14 July 2016 | Indiana Governor Mike Pence landed at Teterboro airport in New Jersey Thursday evening, one day ahead of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's big VP announcement. CNN is reporting that that Donald Trump personally called Pence Thursday afternoon and asked him to be his running mate in the 2016 presidential campaign. They are also reporting that Pence accepted the offer.
 
Donald Trump to announce Mike Pence as vice-presidential running mate --Pence is big promoter of Obama's TPP corporate takeover | 14 July 2016 | Donald Trump has picked Mike Pence to be his vice-presidential candidate, the Guardian has learned. Pence, the governor of Indiana, represents a safe choice who would solidify the Republican base and is popular with social conservatives. In order to choose Pence, Trump had to make a decision by noon on Friday, the deadline for the Indiana governor to drop his bid for re-election. France 'informed of planned terror attack on Rio Olympic team' | 14 July 2016 | A terrorist attack targeting the French delegation at the Rio 2016 Olympics has been foiled by security services, it has emerged. The head of French military intelligence said "partner agencies" had issued an alert about the alleged plot by a Brazilian Islamist militant, according to a report into the Paris terror attacks in January and November, which killed 147. No other details about the plans were released and the information was not shared with Brazil’s intelligence agency Abin.
 
Fires tear through a row of cars in Brussels 'as three explosions are heard' in the south of the city --The area is only a short distance from the European Parliament building | 13 July 2016 | Several cars were destroyed after they burst into flames tonight in the Brussels business district of Saint Gilles amid fears of a possible terror attack. Early reports suggest that there may have been up to three blasts, although there has been on official confirmation of a terrorist explosion. Several cars have been destroyed been destroyed with video posted on social media showing pictures of a large fire.

"The Syrian army has made a lot of advancement recently," Assad toldNBC News... "The Russian support of the Syrian army has tipped the scales against the terrorists," he said. "It was the crucial factor."  He accused successive U.S. administrations of stoking chaos around the world, "becoming more and more pyromaniac."
 
Leaked Data Reveal How the U.S. Trains Vast Numbers of Foreign Soldiers and Police With Little Oversight | 13 July 2016 | A joint investigation by The Intercept and 100Reporters reveals the chaotic and largely unknown details of a vast constellation of global training exercises, operations, facilities, and schools - a shadowy network of U.S. programs that every year provides instruction and assistance to approximately 200,000 foreign soldiers, police, and other personnel. The investigation exposes the geographic and political contours of a U.S. training system that has, until now, largely defied thorough description. The data show training at no fewer than 471 locations in 120 countries - on every continent but Antarctica - involving, on the U.S. side, 150 defense agencies, civilian agencies, armed forces colleges, defense training centers, military units, private companies, and NGOs, as well as the National Guard forces of five states.
 
Donald Trump's Campaign Signals He Will Pick Mike Pence as Running Mate | 14 July 2016 | Donald J. Trump's campaign has signaled strongly to Republicans in Washington that he will pick Mike Pence, the governor of Indiana, as his running mate, though Republicans caution the party's mercurial presidential candidate may still backtrack on his apparent choice. Mr. Trump's advisers have told national Republican officials that they are preparing to make an announcement with Mr. Pence, according to three people with knowledge of the conversations, who were not authorized to discuss them publicly. His campaign has said that it will unveil a running mate for Mr. Trump in New York on Friday. "I am concerned about the prospect of demonstrations getting out of hand, and concerned about the possibility of violence," Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson told the House Homeland Security Committee today. "We have to be concerned about things getting out of hand, definitely."
 
Cleveland's Police and Courts Prepare for Unruly Visitors | 13 July 2016 | With thousands of protesters expected to descend on Cleveland for next week's Republican National Convention, city officials have devised intricate plans to handle mass arrests should chaos break out on the streets, identifying jail facilities to house more than 975 arrested protesters and keeping courts open for 20 hours daily to process cases. Twelve judges will be working 10-hour shifts in the Cleveland Municipal Court to handle what could be a flood of cases. And to guard against violence, the authorities have been collecting intelligence on extremist groups to identify any possible threats.

Her remarks about Trump were "ill-advised", she said, adding: "I regret making them." In an interview with the New York Times last week, Ginsburg said she could not "imagine what the country would be with Donald Trump as our president" and suggested her late husband would have taken such a scenario as a reason to emigrate – as far away as New Zealand.

Three arrested, machine gun found following lockdown at US Capitol building | 12 July 2016 | Three people were arrested near the US Capitol building on Tuesday following reports of an armed suspect in the area. Police said the suspects led them on a high-speed chase before their vehicle crashed, NBC Washingtonreports. Police also recovered a "mini-machine" gun and multiple rounds of ammunition at the scene. US Capitol Police warned occupants inside the building of the ongoing pursuit, and issued a lockdown that lasted for 20 minutes.
 
3 arrested in 'credible threat' to harm Baton Rouge cops - police | 12 July 2016 | Police arrested three suspects and were seeking a possible fourth suspect accused of stealing several handguns as part of what authorities Tuesday described as "substantial, credible threat" to harm police officers in the Baton Rouge area. The arrests come at a time of heightened tensions after the deadly police shootings of black men in Baton Rouge and Minnesota and the killing of five police officers in Dallas last week...State Police Col. Mike Edmonson called it a "substantial, credible threat" to police. Six of the eight stolen firearms have been recovered and two are still at large, authorities said.
 
Five people suspected of shooting at police arrested in Washington DC | 12 July 2016 | Five people suspected of shooting at police officers before barricading themselves inside a vehicle in Washington D.C. were arrested on Tuesday, police said. No one was reported injured in the incident, which took place days after five police officers were fatally shot during a demonstration in Dallas to protest at police violence against black men and other minorities. In the incident in Washington D.C., officers in marked patrol cars were responding to reports of gunshots just after midnight in the southeast of the city when at least one person inside a parked SUV opened fire on the patrol cars, a spokeswoman with the Metropolitan Police Department said.

It was the second time a major Minnesota interstate was blocked by protesters since last week's fatal police shooting of Philando Castile in Falcon Heights.
 
Attorneys confirm Chelsea Manning attempted suicide | 11 July 2016 | Attorneys for the transgender soldier imprisoned in Kansas for sending classified information to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks said Monday her hospitalization last week was due to an attempted suicide. Chelsea Manning's attorneys, in an email to media outlets, did not disclose details about the attempt early July 5 at the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, where the 28-year-old Manning is serving a 35-year sentence. But the attorneys, who said they spoke to Manning by telephone Monday for the first time since the attempt, accused the U.S. Army of a "gross breach of confidentiality" for publicly revealing last week that Manning had been hospitalized.

Chief mouser Larry - a brown and white tabby entrusted with the rat-catching portfolio - will continue to reside in his famous abode when Theresa May moves in after becoming prime minister on Wednesday. A Cabinet Office spokeswoman said: "It's a civil servant's cat and does not belong to the Camerons - he will be staying."
