President-elect Trump signifies he will end US support for Syrian 'rebels' --President-elect appears to reiterate his position that an alliance with Syrian and Russian governments to defeat Isis is his preferred way forward in the Syrian conflict | 12 Nov 2016 | President-elect Donald Trump has reaffirmed his campaign trail position that assisting the Syrian government in fighting Isis should be the US's main objective in Syria, despite appeals from 'rebels' for continued help in their fight against [democratically-elected] President Bashar al-Assad. "I've had an opposite view of many people regarding Syria. My attitude was you're fighting Syria, Syria is fighting Isis, and you have to get rid of Isis," he said in a wide-ranging interview with the Wall Street Journal on Friday...He has also been emphatic about mending ties with Russia, Syria's long-standing ally and military backer in the conflict.
Trump: Criminals will be deported first | 13 Nov 2016 | Donald Trump will begin tackling the issue of illegal immigration by rounding up and deporting undocumented immigrants with criminal records, a group that he estimates at 2 million to 3 million people, the president-elect said in an interview to air Sunday night. "What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably 2 million, it could be even 3 million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate," he said in the interview, to air on "60 Minutes" on CBS. "But we're getting them out of our country; they're here illegally."
Trump picks Priebus as White House chief of staff, Bannon as top adviser | 13 Nov 2016 | Donald Trump named two top advisers to his administration Sunday, tapping Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus to be his new chief of staff and Steve Bannon, the Trump campaign CEO and executive chairman of Breitbart News, as chief strategist and senior counselor. It's an unusual arrangement that could create two power centers in the new White House. The campaign statement, which listed Bannon's role first, referred to the two men as "equal partners." Both Priebus and Bannon were highly involved with working out the arrangement, a source familiar with the decision said.

Mr. Trump on Sunday also named Steve Bannon, who was in consideration for the White House's top personnel position, as chief strategist and senior counsel.
Trump calls for '21st century' Glass-Steagall banking law | 26 Oct 2016 | U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday called for a "21st century" version of the 1933 Glass-Steagall law that required the separation of commercial and investment banking, a change the Republican Party also supported in its 2016 policy platform. Trump gave no details about his banking plan other than to say he would prioritize "helping African American businesses get the credit they need." Democrat Hillary Clinton's husband, former president Bill Clinton, signed legislation in 1999 that repealed Glass-Steagall.

Trump's transition effort, taking the helm from Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, as Mr. Trump moves to assemble a government after his stunning upset victory, the transition team said on Friday. Mr. Christie had been in charge of the transition for the last several months, but the surprise nature of Mr. Trump's victory made it critical to move more quickly to assemble a team...Mr. Christie, along with Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, and Michael T. Flynn, a retired lieutenant general who has been a top campaign supporter, will serve as vice chairs of the transition, the sources said.
Corey Lewandowski resigns from CNN | 11 Nov 2016 | Corey Lewandowski, Donald Trump's campaign manager turned CNN commentator, resigned from CNN on Friday afternoon. The resignation is effective immediately. Lewandowski has stayed in close touch with Trump and some top Trump aides since being fired from the campaign in June. This week there has been media discussion about Lewandowski possibly taking a role in the Trump administration.
Army Special Forces soldiers killed in Jordan were working for the CIA | 12 Nov 2016 | The three Army Special Forces soldiers killed at a Jordanian military base this month were working for a CIA program to train 'moderate Syrian fighters' when they were shot at a checkpoint under still-unclear circumstances, U.S. officials said. The Nov. 4 slayings of the three soldiers is believed to be the deadliest single incident involving a CIA team since December 2009, when seven officers and contractors were killed in a suicide bombing in Khost, Afghanistan. The Fort Campbell, Ky.-based soldiers -- all members of the 5th Special Forces Group -- were killed by a Jordanian soldier at an entry control point to Prince Faisal Air Base near Jafr, in the southern desert about 150 miles south of the capital, Amman, according to the officials.
US embassy in Afghanistan closed following two suicide attacks in a week | 13 Nov 2016 | The US Embassy in Afghanistan has closed following two deadly suicide attacks in the country targeting an American military base and a German consulate. A statement released from the embassy in Kabul said it will be "closed for routine services" on Sunday (13 November) as a "temporary precautionary measure", reported AP. The unusual decision comes after four Americans -- two soldiers and two contractors -- were killed and 16 were injured in a blast at Bagram Airfield on Saturday.
Taliban bomber kills 4 Americans at NATO base in Afghanistan | 12 Nov 2016 | A Taliban suicide bomber dressed as a labourer blew himself up at the NATO air base at Bagram north of the Afghan capital Kabul on Saturday, killing four Americans and wounding at least 17 people in one of the bloodiest attacks against U.S. forces since President Barack Obama took office. Two U.S. military service members and two U.S. contractors were killed, and 16 other U.S. service members were wounded, along with a Polish soldier who was part of the NATO mission [sic], U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in a statement.
Taliban storm German consulate in Afghan city, four killed --Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Germany would review its lead role in the international [so-called] mission in northern Afghanistan | 11 Nov 2016 | Taliban militants stormed the German consulate in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif, ramming its outer wall with a truck bomb before battling security forces in a late-night attack that killed at least four people, officials said. The explosion, triggered by a suicide bomber, caused extensive damage to the building and shattered windows as far as 5 km (3 miles) away, a NATO spokesman said. A local doctor said the blast and subsequent firefight also wounded 120 people.
Assassination threats against Trump flood Twitter | 11 Nov 2016 | The shock and anger over Donald Trump's ascension to the White House has triggered a flood of calls on Twitter and other social media outlets for the president-elect to be assassinated -- and authorities will investigate all threats deemed to be credible, The Post has learned. Trump met Thursday with President Obama in the Oval Office, with the Republican businessman calling the hour-plus session a "great honor." ...But that message of inclusion was apparently lost in social media circles, particularly Twitter, where a simple search can reveal dozens and dozens of calls to gun down the next leader of the free world. Some posts called for both Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence to be assassinated, and there’s even an #AssassinateTrump hashtag.
Two College Students Under Investigation Over Trump Celebration Victory Lap | 13 Nov 2016 | Two Babson College students are reportedly in trouble after their idea of Donald Trump victory celebration was too much for some to handle...They are currently accused of trespassing. Wellesley College's Honor Code Council is demanding that Babson College expel them immediately. "We believe the actions on Wellesley's campus on Nov. 9 clearly constitute bullying, endangering behavior, and harassment of the Wellesley College community," they wrote.
Mob pummels man supposedly because he voted for Trump | 10 Nov 2016 | Amid a furious wave of anti-Donald Trump protests across the nation, disturbing footage from Chicago has emerged showing a mob beating the daylights out of a man -- purportedly because he voted for the president-elect. The footage, now making the rounds on social media, shows the victim being clobbered by at least two others, as others heartily cheer in the background. "You voted Trump, you voted Trump!" onlookers scream during the repugnant scene.

Mr Trump will become the 45th US president after securing a surprise victory over Hillary Clinton. Mr Obama - who had branded Mr Trump "unfit" for office and campaigned against him - urged all Americans to accept the result of Tuesday's election.
Thousands take to streets of U.S. cities to protest Trump victory | 09 Nov 2016 | Demonstrators marched in cities across the United States on Wednesday to protest against Republican Donald Trump's surprise U.S. presidential election win, blasting his controversial campaign rhetoric about immigrants, Muslims and other groups. In New York, thousands of protesters filled streets in midtown Manhattan as they made their way to Trump Tower, Trump's gilded home on Fifth Avenue. Hundreds of others gathered at a Manhattan park and shouted "Not my president." Protesters threw objects at police in riot gear and smashed windows at a CVS drug store in Oakland, California.
Thousands of Bay Area students walk out following Trump election | 09 Nov 2016 | Holding signs reading "Not our president" and defiantly chanting Wednesday, thousands of students spilled out of Bay Area high schools, taking to the streets in anti-Donald Trump protests -- the latest round of action across the Bay Area following the New York billionaire's election to the highest office in the land. A wave of students rushed out of Berkeley High School around 9 a.m. and met near the school's theater along Allston Way before the throng of young people was joined by several teachers in a march to the UC Berkeley campus.
Yale Professor Cancels Exam for Snowflake Students Distraught at Election Result | 09 Nov 2016 | Liberal students across the nation watched in shock as Donald Trump clinched victory from Hillary Clinton to become the 45th president of the United States. But some wiped their tears, and pulled themselves together enough to ask their professors to cancel their exams because they were so upset by the results. And one Yale economics professor heard the cry, and decided to protect his snowflake charges by making the test optional. He wrote to them, saying: "I am getting many heartfelt notes from students who are in shock over the election returns" and "fear, rightly or wrongly for their families" and are "requesting that the exam be postponed."
Dow jumps to record high as hope grows that Trump would lift economy | 10 Nov 2016 | The Dow Jones industrial average reached a record high on Wednesday amid growing hopes that President-elect Donald Trump would deliver major stimulus to the economy. The index rose 218 points, or 1.2 percent, to close at 18,808, while the broader Standard & Poor's 500 stock-index also gained.

Internet Sleuths Are Convinced That the Podestas Are the Kidnappers in These Police Sketches | 07 Nov 2016 | On Sunday evening, side-by-side images of Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta and his brother Tony next to police sketches of potential suspects in a 2007 kidnapping of a three-year-old girl took over the internet. Madeleine Beth McCann should have celebrated her 13th birthday with her family in England this year, but she vanished from her bed during a family vacation to Portugal in 2003...In 2013, five years after Portuguese police had closed the case, they reopened it and revealed two new police sketches. It was believed that they were supposed to be of the same man, but from two different witnesses. Reddit and others on social media are now asking, what if it was actually two different men, and what if it was the Podestas?
Terror-funding conviction in San Diego under fire over NSA phone data collection | 12 Nov 2016 | ...In the wake of the [Edward] Snowden revelations, Congress did away with the law the NSA relied on to justify the bulk collection of phone records and replaced it with more restrictive rules. But Basaaly Saeed Moalin and the other defendants on Thursday revived questions about the defunct program's legality when they argued to a federal appeals court that their convictions should be overturned because the government's use of the phone records was improper. The case marks the first time a challenge to the phone data program has been used to appeal a conviction, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing the men.
NZ officials say quake dam breaches, tell downstream residents to evacuate - RNZ | 13 Nov 2016 | A slip dam caused by a series of earthquakes that have hit New Zealand, blocking the Clarence River on the South Island, has breached and sent a wall of water heading downstream, Radio New Zealand quoted local authorities as saying on Monday. "Residents are urgently advised to move to higher ground immediately," RNZ quoted a statement from the Marlborough District Council as saying.
Two reported dead after huge earthquake strikes New Zealand | 13 Nov 2016 | A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck in the south island of New Zealand early Monday morning, triggering a tsunami alert for the entire east coast of the country as six-foot-high waves began to come in. Later, the alert was downgraded. Emergency authorities advised people to stay off the beaches and away from the coast along the length of both islands, and evacuation advisories were issued for the South Island area of Kaikoura and for Wellington, the capital city.
