Hurricane Harvey is now a catastrophic Category 4 storm | 25 Aug 2017 | Hurricane Harvey became a Category 4 storm Friday afternoon with winds of 130 mph. The latest forecast track has Harvey making landfall near Corpus Christi very early Saturday morning. The impacts of a Category 4 hurricane (130-156 mph) can include: Catastrophic damage to homes and buildings; mobile homes are destroyed; most large trees are snapped or uprooted; some roads impassable; large areas without power and communication outages. Houston, Texas, could see rainfall of 15 to 20 inches with isolated areas getting up to 30 inches of rainfall by next Wednesday.
 
Harvey becomes a category FOUR: Strengthening hurricane now has winds of 130mph as residents in its path are told to write their social security number on their arm before it hits in case they die | 25 Aug 2017 | Hurricane Harvey has now been upgraded to a Category 4, exceeding forecasts of how strong the storm would be when it slams into Texas, as residents in the storm's path are being told to label themselves in case they die. Texas Governor Greg Abbott warned that Hurricane Harvey would be 'a major disaster' as the storm barreled toward the state, which is expecting catastrophic flooding, power outages, winds up to 130mph and more than 40 inches of rain on top of storm surges up to 12 feet...As President Donald Trump departed the White House for Camp David on Friday afternoon, he responded when asked what message he had for the people of Texas: 'Good luck to everybody. They're gonna be safe. Good luck to everybody. Good luck.'
 
Japan's Tepco gets slapped with new U.S. lawsuit over Fukushima | 24 Aug 2017 | Tokyo Electric Power Co Holdings said on Thursday it has been hit with another lawsuit filed in a U.S. court seeking $5 billion for compensation over the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, the second filed against the utility in a U.S. court. The suit filed [on Aug. 18, 2017,] by 157 individuals is seeking that amount to set up a compensation fund for the costs of medical tests and treatment they say they need after efforts to support the recovery from the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986. The utility, known as Tepco, is being sued regarding improper design, construction and maintenance, claiming compensation for physical, mental and economic damages, the company said in a statement.
 
Saudi-led airstrikes kill up to 14 civilians, including children - witnesses | 25 Aug 2017 | Airstrikes, apparently conducted by the Saudi-led coalition [of sociopaths] in Yemen, have killed up to 14 civilians, including six children, witnesses on the ground report. The attack targeted the Faj Attan area on the southern outskirts of Sanaa and also reduced two buildings to rubble, Reuters cites local sources as saying. The bodies of several children, who appear to be as young as 10, have been recovered by rescuers, the agency said.

North Korea fires 'several projectiles', says South | 25 Aug 2017 | North Korea has fired "several projectiles" into sea off its eastern coast, the South Korean military says. The missile was launched from a site in the North Korean province of Gangwon and flew for about 250km (150 miles), officials in the South said. The projectiles were first launched at 06:49 on Saturday (21:49 GMT Friday), South Korea's Defence Ministry said.
 
Trump Signs Sanctions Aimed Squarely at Venezuelan Government | 25 Aug 2017 | President Trump is imposing a new round of economic sanctions that are aimed squarely at choking off money to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's government but "carefully calibrated" to preserve U.S. oil imports from the South American country, according to the White House. The latest sanctions -- the fourth round in recent weeks -- are the first to move beyond freezing the assets of individuals and target the government itself. The executive order signed by Trump bars U.S. institutions from buying new debt issued by the Venezuelan government or from the state-owned oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA.
 
Buckingham Palace on lockdown as police arrest man after two officers are 'attacked with a sword' in front of terrified tourists | 25 Aug 2017 | Buckingham Palace is tonight on lockdown after police arrested a man who allegedly attacked two officers while armed with a sword in front of frightened tourists. Police stopped the man at 8.35pm and discovered he was carrying a knife and two officers suffered 'minor injuries' to their arms when they detained him. The man was later arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assault on police. Officers remain outside the building this evening.
 
Soldiers attacked by knife-wielding man in Brussels, incident treated as 'terrorist act' | 25 Aug 2017 | A knife wielding man has been shot dead in the center of the Belgian capital of Brussels after attacking a group of soldiers in what the federal prosecutor are treating as a terrorist attack. The prosecutor's office confirmed that Belgian soldiers shot and killed the man in downtown Brussels after he attacked the troops with a knife. The prosecutor also revealed that the man twice shouted "Allahu Akbar" - meaning "God is great" in Arabic - while carrying out the attack, Reuters reported.
 
Dutch concert cancelled after terror tip-off from Spanish police | 24 Aug 2017 | A concert in Rotterdam has been cancelled after a tip-off about a potential terror threat from Spanish police. The city's mayor, Ahmed Aboutaleb, said gas bottles were found in a small van with Spanish number plates found near the venue, where American rock group Allah-Las were due to perform. Police detained the driver, reported to be Spanish by the El Pais newspaper, and the vehicle was examined by a bomb squad...A Spanish counter-terrorism investigation official said Spain's Civil Guard received "an alert indicating the possibility of an attack today in a concert that was going to take place in Rotterdam".
 
2 suspicious packages investigated near White House, U.S. Capitol | 22 Aug 2017 | A man was arrested outside the U.S. Capitol Tuesday afternoon after police responded to the area for a report of a suspicious package. It was the first of two reports of suspicious packages downtown. The Secret Service also investigated a unattended package near the White House. That package was seen along the north fence line.
 
Sebastian Gorka resigns from White House | 25 Aug 2017 | Sebastian Gorka has resigned from his position as a top counterterrorism adviser to President Donald Trump, a White House official tells CNN. Gorka was also a member of the White House's Strategic Initiatives Group, which he described as a focal point for task forces collaborating with people outside government...A CNN K-File review of Gorka's public comments throughout the presidential campaign shows that even after his work for Trump, the former Breitbart national security editor offered stinging critiques of his future boss's rhetoric on key foreign policy issues from terrorism to Russia and China.
 
Trump signs directive banning transgender military recruits | 25 Aug 2017 | President Donald Trump on Friday directed the military not to move forward with an Obama-era plan that would have allowed transgender individuals to be recruited into the armed forces, following through on his intentions announced a month earlier to ban transgender people from serving. The presidential memorandum also bans the Department of Defense from using its resources to provide medical treatment regimens for transgender individuals currently serving in the military.
 
US navy to relieve 7th Fleet commander of duty after series of collisions | 22 Aug 2017 | The US navy is to relieve the commander of the 7th Fleet of duty following a series of collisions in Asia according to multiple reports. Three star admiral Joseph Aucoin will be removed from his role, an official told Reuters. The news comes after a collision involving the USS John McCain last week that left ten sailors missing. In June the USS Fitzgerald crashed into a cargo ship, leaving seven US sailors dead.

Admiral John Richardson, the chief of naval operations, said on Monday that there were 'no indications right now' that the two ships were hacked, but added investigators 'will consider all possibilities'. The shocking possibility emerged as the Navy ordered a broad investigation into the performance and readiness of the Pacific-based 7th Fleet.
 
Trump pardons ex-Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio - White House | 25 Aug 2017 | U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday granted a pardon to former Arizona lawman and political ally Joe Arpaio, the self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff in America," less than a month after he was convicted of criminal contempt in a case involving his department's racial profiling policy. Trump had signaled this week that the first presidential pardon of his administration would go to Arpaio, 85, whom he has frequently praised for his hardline immigration stance...Arpaio had been scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 5 and faced a fine and maximum sentence of six months in jail.
 
Canada Introduces 'X' as a Third Sex Category for Passport Holders | 25 Aug 2017 | Starting Thursday, Canadians will have a new way to identify their sex on passports and other government documents: "X" will join the options of male and female. The decision to allow the third category, indicating an "unspecified" sex, is intended to protect the rights of Canadians to identify by the gender of their choice, the country's immigration department said in announcing the change... Last year, a judge in Oregon granted a petitionallowing Jamie Shupe of Portland, a retired Army sergeant, to identify as neither sex and instead be classified as non-binary.

The "Social Justice Committee," spearheaded by Counseling Psychology student Eve Faris, plans to work with professors to "incorporate issues of power, privilege, and inequity into all of the Counseling Psychology curriculum," while hosting workshops on "responding to microaggressions." Although the committee quietly convened shortly after the election of Donald Trump, it was formally introduced to the university community last Wednesday, according to Faris, who noted that the group currently has 20 active members.

On Wednesday afternoon, the group posted the photo of the toddler wearing a 'Free Speech' onesie along with the caption: 'This is the future that ACLU members want'. The free-speech [sic] organization was blasted by social media users who accused the post of being racially insensitive and even likened it to pro-Nazi commentary.
 
Insanity! ESPN removes broadcaster Robert Lee from covering UVA game because of his name | 22 Aug 2017 | ESPN broadcaster Robert Lee will not work Virginia's season opener because of recent violence in Charlottesville sparked by the decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. A spokeswoman for ESPN says Lee has been moved to Youngstown State's game at Pittsburgh on the ACC Network on Sept. 2. The network says the decision was made "as the tragic events in Charlottesville were unfolding, simply because of the coincidence of his name."

Hurricane Harvey likely to be 'catastrophic,' 'life-threatening,' forecasters warn | 25 Aug 2017 | As "catastrophic" Hurricane Harvey churns toward Texas, bringing with it a "life-threatening storm surge," major cities have devolved into ghost towns while authorities use their last hours before landfall to warn of the chaos to come. A tornado warning was issued for Galveston on Friday. Flooding could reach heights of 6 to 12 feet above ground level along the Texas coast, according to the National Hurricane Center and nearly three feet of rain could fall in some regions. Harvey is now considered a Category 3 storm, according to the National Hurricane Center, as it prepares to make landfall late Friday or early Saturday.
 
Strengthening Harvey forecast to slam Texas coast as first major hurricane in U.S. since 2005 | 24 Aug 2017 | Harvey rapidly intensified Thursday morning in the central Gulf of Mexico, and officially became a hurricane early in the afternoon. The extremely dangerous storm is predicted to strengthen further and plow into Southeast Texas Friday as the first major hurricane, rated Category 3 or higher (on the 1-5 Saffir-Simpson intensity scale), to strike U.S. soils in 12 years. An incredible amount of rain, 15 to 25 inches with isolated amounts up to 35 inches, is predicted along the middle and upper Texas coast, because the storm is expected to stall and unload torrential downpours for four to six straight days. Marshall Shepherd, a past-president of the American Meteorological Society, tweeted that he feared an "epic flood catastrophe."
