CounterCurrents: 40 Thousand US Massacring Hundreds Of Syrian Civilians Every Week In Raqqa

Dear Friend,

The US-backed onslaught on the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa is claiming hundreds of civilian lives every week, including dozens of women and children. US aircraft and troops on the ground are deploying indiscriminate force on a civilian center where an estimated 25,000 people remained trapped and a further 270,000 have already fled.

Sally Dugman puts forward some pertinent questions "Do we have a sufficient supply of self-control and compassion toward our unknown descendants to curb our boundless desire for ever more merchandise, petrol, electricity and offspring? Can we find some modicum of happiness within deliberately self-proscribed limits?"

A powerful poem by Atindriyo Chakraborty

Rohingya, flesh of me and my mother
soul of my sweet, big, ancient earth
you,
friends,
shall live
and they, who took your lands and bodies,
shan’t.

Obama’s Legacy Is An Excuse For Trump
by Dr Arshad M Khan

And, he has just delivered a speech to the American public. Not from the White House, but from Fort Myer Army Base in Virginia with regimental flags arrayed behind him . A rambling, self-contradictory bit of nonsense, he is going to kill terrorists in Afghanistan, and yes, he wants the Taliban in a future Afghan government, but no, he does not want Taliban leaders to be sheltered in Pakistan! Last week it was North Korea, this week Afghanistan, next week heaven knows … Something might occur to him at 2 a.m. to tweet about.

Trump’s Strategy May Drive Pakistan Closer To Russia And China

Beijing and Moscow have come to Pakistan’s defense in light of President Donald Trump’s Afghan and Pakistan strategy unveiled on Monday.

The Times Ahead: Catastrophes, Resource Conflicts And Cooperation
by Sally Dugman

Do we have a sufficient supply of self-control and compassion toward our unknown descendants to curb our boundless desire for ever more merchandise, petrol, electricity and offspring? Can we find some modicum of happiness within deliberately self-proscribed limits? If not, it is almost inevitable that we will, eventually, wind up with far less people, inadequate energy sources and minimized per person consumption due to the mounting harm to our globe that we are now producing. … Our forebears had no choice but to deal with the effects of Toba Tuff. We, though, DO have a choice and it is a clear one with high stakes. Thus, can we start changing immediately out of our growing recognition that it is absolutely essential that we do so? In the least, we owe it to the future generations to make a determined effort to cooperate together to create better methods to reduce our ecological damage! Literally, their lives depend on it!

Right To Privacy Judgement: A Tight Slap To The Government
by Anuj Wankhede

Honestly, I feel overwhelmed by this judgement. It has been nearly seven years that I have been involved in opposing Aadhaar. Often called mad by people who ridiculed me and gave examples about the “success” of Aadhaar and why I should not oppose Aadhaar and embrace it like the countless millions who had.

Gender And Higher Education
by Prety Bhagat

There should be space and confidence to speak up against any form of violence or injustice. In spite of the state in the grip of conflict, we have women setting examples in various fields fighting against all odds including our first female chief minister Ms. Mehbooba Mufti. In spite of criticisms of her party’s ideology or various policies, as a woman her presence and resilience in the male dominated politics of the state is worthy of appreciation. Likewise there are various other women engaged in the day to day struggles of overcoming their subordination within the patriarchal set up. The first and the foremost step is to speak up.

“Azadi” To “Special Status”
by Mohammad Ashraf

There seems to be a deliberate hype for retaining the so called “Special Status” in order to dilute the universal demand for total freedom called “Azadi”!

Twenty Five Years Of Indian Women’s Self Help Movement
by Moin Qazi

In India, the most popular model for empowering village women through financial access and social mobilisation is the self-help group concept. A typical Indian self-help group consists of 10-20 poor women from similar socio-economic backgrounds. The common characteristics of these self-help groups are: self-selected and unrelated members, small size, regular attendance at meetings, regular savings by members, peer pressure to enforce repayment of loans and simple and transparent procedures.
