Progressive Breakfast: Trump Says 'Love' but Spews Hate

MORNING MESSAGE

Libero Della Piana
Trump Says 'Love' but Spews Hate
It doesn’t matter what’s in Trump’s heart or mind. His actions, words and policies, on full display in Phoenix, support and advance racism. Trump is in fact racism’s main spokesperson today, and its main policy advocate.

Trump Rants, Threatens in Arizona

Trump threatens shutdowns of government, NAFTA talks. WaPo:“He didn’t attempt to continue the carefully choreographed messaging of the night or to narrow the ever-deepening divide between the thousands of supporters gathered in the convention center hall before him and the thousands of protesters waiting outside… Over the next 72 minutes, the president launched into one angry rant after another, repeatedly attacking the media and providing a lengthy defense of his response to the violent clashes in Charlottesville, between white supremacists and neo-Nazis and the counterprotesters who challenged them. He threatened to shut down the government if he doesn’t receive funding for a wall along the southern border, announced that he will ‘probably’ get rid of the North American Free Trade Agreement, attacked the state’s two Republican senators, repeatedly referred to protesters as ‘thugs’ and coyly hinted that he will pardon Joe Arpaio, the former sheriff of Maricopa County who was convicted in July of criminal contempt in Arizona for ignoring a judge’s order to stop detaining people because he merely suspected them of being undocumented immigrants.”

Phoenix Police Gas Protesters

Police use tear gas on crowds after Trump rally. NYT:“The police used tear gas to disperse crowds numbering in the thousands on Tuesday night outside the Phoenix Convention Center as tempers flared around President Trump’s divisive speech at a campaign-style rally here. Hundreds of people ran off, streaming into the surrounding streets, coughing and wiping tears from their eyes. Police helicopters circled above downtown Phoenix after the speech, telling people to leave the area or face arrest. While tensions were high before and during the speech — the police tried to keep supporters and opponents of the president apart outside — they escalated afterward.”

First Deported DREAMer May Return to U.S.

Judge prepared to order first DREAMer deported under Trump back to U.S. to make his case. USA Today:“A federal judge said Tuesday he was preparing to order the Trump administration to return the first known DREAMer it deported back to the United States to make his case for staying. U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel said he needs to hear first-hand from Juan Manuel Montes, 23, to rule on the undocumented immigrant’s claim that he was deported illegally by border agents. Lawyers for Montes say he was wrongfully removed from the country around 1 a.m. on Feb. 19 because he had protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program, or DACA. The Trump administration said Montes voluntarily left the country, forfeiting his protection from deportation. ‘I would be inclined to direct that he be paroled into the United States,’ Curiel said. ‘I would like to observe the demeanor of the witnesses. I would like to determine what they have to say.'”

Trumps Want to Use DREAMers to Get Wall Funding

Trump aides plot a big immigration deal — that breaks a campaign promise. McClatchy:“Donald Trump’s top aides are pushing him to protect young people brought into the country illegally as children — and then use the issue as a bargaining chip for a larger immigration deal — despite the president’s campaign vow to deport so-called Dreamers. The White House officials want Trump to strike an ambitious deal with Congress that offers Dreamers protection in exchange for legislation that pays for a border wall and more detention facilities, curbs legal immigration and implements E-verify, an online system that allows businesses to check immigration status, according to a half-dozen people familiar with situation, most involved with the negotiations.”

Trump Immigration Plan Kills Millions of Jobs

Trump immigration plan to cost 4.6 million jobs. CNN Money:“In a report published Thursday, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School said the immigration plan, dubbed the RAISE Act, would result in 4.6 million lost jobs by the year 2040. It also found that the U.S. economy would be 2% smaller than it would be under the current immigration policy during that time.
Last week, Trump threw his support behind the RAISE Act, a bill crafted by Republican Senators David Perdue and Tom Cotton. The proposal seeks to cut legal immigration to the U.S. by 50% within a decade.”

DOJ Backs Down From Demand for Identities of Resisters

DOJ drops request for IP addresses from Trump resistance site
The Hill:
“The government said in a brief released Tuesday that it has ‘no interest’ in the 1.3 million IP addresses related to the website disruptj20.org. It says it is solely focused on information that could constitute evidence related to criminal rioting on Inauguration Day. ‘The Warrant — like the criminal investigation — is singularly focused on criminal activity,’ the reply brief states. ‘It will not be used for any other purpose.; Privacy and civil liberties advocates were up in arms last week when the web hosting company DreamHost publicized a July 12 search warrant for information related to disruptj20.org, which was used to organize protests on Inauguration Day. DreamHost said complying with the request would amount to handing over roughly 1.3 million visitor IP addresses and other information about visitors to the site.”
