Russian defence ministry doubles down, again accuses U.S. of supporting ISIS | 04 Oct 2017 | Two week after Russia released a set of satellite photos from Syria, which allegedly showed US special ops located in immediate proximity to ISIS [I-CIA-SIS] positions, the Russian defence ministry doubled down on Wednesday and again accused the United States of supporting Islamic State jihadists, enabling them to mount counter-offensive attacks in eastern Syria. "The main thing preventing the final defeat of ISIS in Syria is not the terrorists' military capability but support and pandering to them by American colleagues," Russian military spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a statement. Quoted by AFP, he said recent attacks on Syrian government forces were all made "from a 50-kilometre zone around At-Tanf on the Syrian-Jordan border" where the US-led coalition is operating a garrison. As we first noted at the end of September, in recent weeks Moscow has repeatedly accused the US of hindering the offensive in the east of the country against IS jihadists mounted by Syrian government forces with the support of Russian airstrikes and special forces on the ground.

 

US 'simulates' anti-ISIS fight in Iraq as terrorists cross into Syria - MoD | 10 Oct 2017 | The Russian Defense Ministry has accused the US-led international coalition of "simulating" the fight against ISIS in Iraq. The coalition conducted fewer airstrikes in Iraq in September while well-armed terrorists crossed into Syria, Moscow added. For the past week, the focus of the Russian-led air campaign in Syria has been to annihilate terrorists in the city of Al-Mayadeen, one of the terrorists' last strongholds southeast of the city of Deir ez-Zor.

 

Britain makes battle plans for war with North Korea: Top brass could send new aircraft carrier before it's even had flight trials --A senior Whitehall source said: 'We have plenty of ships to send' | 08 Oct 2017 | The Armed Forces are preparing for a potential war with North Korea, sources have revealed. Officials have been instructed to draw up plans for how Britain would respond if war broke out with Pyongyang amid heightening tensions between the West and leader Kim Jong-Un. One option involves deploying Britain's new aircraft carrier - due to be handed over to the Navy later this year - before she has undergone flight trials. Details of the secret operation plan have emerged after Donald Trump warned that 'only one thing will work' when it comes to dealing with North Korea, which has continued nuclear and rocket tests despite widespread condemnation.

 

US warship approaches Korean Peninsula for drills with South Korea | 06 Oct 2017 | The USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier along with a guided-missile cruiser and a nuclear-powered submarine are on their way to the Korean Peninsula to prepare for a potential war with North Korea, while Pyongyang reportedly plans new missiles tests. As of Friday afternoon, the USS Ronald Reagan, with nearly 80 aircraft on board, was in the South China Sea on its way to the shores of US ally South Korea. The two allies will conduct joint drills to detect, track, and intercept ballistic missiles, in addition to anti-submarine warfare training, Yonhap News agency reported, citing an unnamed South Korean official.

 

North Korea is preparing to launch a missile capable of reaching the US West Coast, Russia warns | 07 Oct 2017 | A Russian lawmaker who just returned from a visit to Pyongyang has said North Korea is preparing to launch another missile 'in the nearest future'. Anton Morozov, of the nationalist Liberal-Democratic Party, added that he has seen calculations showing the missile can hit the US West Coast. Mr Morozov also said the North Koreans told him they have technology that would allow them to bring a warhead back down to earth intact.

 

Pentagon chief says US should 'stay with' Iran nuclear deal | 03 Oct 2017 | The US should stay in the Iran nuclear deal if Tehran is found to be "living by the agreement," US Defense Secretary James Mattis said. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to scrap what he has called the "worst deal ever negotiated." "The point I would make is that if we can confirm that Iran is living by the agreement, if we can determine that this is in our best interest, then clearly we should stay with it," Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday. "I believe at this point in time, absent indications to the contrary, it is something that the president should consider staying with." Iran is "not in a material breach of the agreement," said General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

 

Bowe Bergdahl expected to plead guilty to deserting his post | 07 Oct 2017 | Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is expected to plead guilty later this month to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy rather than face trial for leaving his Afghanistan post in 2009, The Associated Press reported. Two sources said the Idaho native would submit the plea later this month and sentencing would start Oct. 23. Bergdahl's lawyer declined to comment when contacted by Fox News. He faces up to five years in prison on the desertion charge and a life sentence for misbehavior.

 

ISIS-inspired plot targeted Times Square, NYC subway, feds say | 06 Oct 2017 | Three men, including an American and a Canadian, plotted ISIS-inspired terror attacks against New York City landmarks, concert venues and the city's subway system last summer, according to federal prosecutors. Charges were unsealed Friday against Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy, a 19-year-old Canadian citizen; Talha Haroon, a 19-year-old U.S. citizen based in Pakistan; and Russell Salic, a 37-year-old citizen of the Philippines. El Bahnasawy was arrested in May 2016 and pleaded guilty this past October to seven terror-related charges, including conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction, conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism across national borders, and conspiracy to bomb a public transportation system. His sentence is pending.

 

3 men arrested in alleged ISIS-inspired plot targeting New York City | 06 Oct 2017 | An alleged ISIS-inspired plot targeting New York City was revealed today after the case was unsealed. Three men have been arrested in connection with the alleged plot, which was described as more aspirational than operational. According to a Justice Department press release, Abdulrahman el Bahnasawy, a 19-year-old Canadian citizen, purchased bomb-making materials to use in alleged attacks in New York City. He was arrested in May 2016.

 

Man charged when loaded gun, AR-15 rifle and pressure cooker was found in vehicle leaving O'Hare | 07 Oct 2017 | A man was charged Saturday after police found an assault-style rifle and handgun inside his vehicle when he was was pulled over after driving out of O’Hare International Airport on the Northwest Side. Shortly after 8 a.m., officers saw the driver, Santos Zamora, 32, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, speeding as he left O'Hare Airport and pulled him over in the 5600 block of North Cumberland, Chicago Police said. A handgun was initially found inside the vehicle, but a more thorough search also revealed an AR-15 rifle and a pressure cooker in the vehicle's trunk.

 

Florida man 'told staff a bomb in his backpack was about to explode' during Mike Pence's visit to Orlando airport --Gray told an airport employee: 'You see this backpack? It's about to explode' | 06 Oct 2017 | A man from Florida was arrested on Thursday at Orlando International Airport for yelling 'it's about to explode' during a visit by Vice President Mike Pence. Fred Gray, 42, allegedly went up to a woman at the information desk at 5pm and said: 'You see this backpack? It's about to explode. It's about to explode' according to WKMG. People in the airport heard Gray screaming and they started to run away...Gray is charged with two counts of making a false bomb threat and is currently at Orange county jail.

 

Marseille suspect had 7 identities, was released by police day before attack | 02 Oct 2017 | The main suspect in a Marseille attack in which two women were stabbed to death had been arrested and let go in Lyon two days before the assault at the train station, authorities said. His details turned out to be tied to seven IDs in criminal databases. Last Friday, the man was detained in Lyon on suspicions of shoplifting, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said at a press conference Monday. He was nabbed at Lyon Part-Dieu shopping center after being accused of stealing a jacket, but was released the following day due to insufficient evidence.

 

Insanity! Mother is JAILED for a week for not vaccinating her nine-year-old son after agreeing to do so in a custody battle with his father --A mother was taken to jail for refusing to vaccinate her 9-year-old son | 04 Oct 2017 | A mother-of-two was handcuffed and booked into jail for a week after refusing to take her nine-year-old son to be vaccinated. Rebecca Bredow, from suburban Detroit, agreed to immunize her son last November during a custody battle with her husband, the judge noted in court on Wednesday. Her ex-husband wanted their son to receive all of his vaccines, but Bredow thought it was best not to vaccinate, so the pair had to come to an agreement in court...Bredow told WXYZ she was permitted to delay her son's shots for personal, medical or religious reasons. [Nut-job] Judge Karen McDonald granted him temporary custody and ordered the son to be vaccinated while his mother is in jail.

 

Panic in Madagascar as bubonic, pneumonic plague death toll rises | 05 Oct 2017 | (Antananarivo) An outbreak of highly contagious plague has claimed 30 lives in the impoverished Indian Ocean island nation of Madagascar over the last two months, authorities said Wednesday. "We have recorded 194 suspected cases of plague, including 30 deaths," health official Manitra Rakotoarivony said in a statement, updating the death toll from 25. The outbreak combines bubonic plague, which is spread by infected rats via flea bites, and pneumonic plague, spread from person to person.

 

Mike Pence leaves 49ers-Colts game over protesting during national anthem | 08 Oct 2017 | Vice President Mike Pence says he left Sunday's 49ers-Colts game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis over protesting that took place during the national anthem. For the second week in a row, the 49ers had more than 20 players kneeling during the national anthem with their hands over their hearts. Teammates stood behind the kneeling players with one hand on a kneeling teammate's shoulder and the other over their hearts...The players stood with their arms locked during the anthem.

 

Watching 'far-right propaganda' or accessing jihadi websites could result in 15-year jail term - Tory Home Secretary Amber Rudd | 03 Oct 2017 | Watching streamed extremist material online will be a criminal offence under plans to crackdown on terrorist propaganda. Home Secretary Amber Rudd will say those found guilty of repeatedly viewing terrorist material could face up to 15 years in jail. The new law will extend an existing ban on downloading and possessing the content on a PC to repeatedly watching it through sites like YouTube. Ms Rudd said: "I want to make sure those who view despicable terrorist content online including jihadi websites, far-right propaganda and bomb-making instructions face the full force of the law."

 

Shoelace mistaken for noose causes racial uproar at Michigan State University | 06 Oct 2017 | A lost shoelace at Michigan State University caused a racial uproar Wednesday after someone mistook it for a noose. MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon released a statement Wednesday morning saying she was "distressed" after finding out "a student reported a noose was hung outside of her room." Simon commended the student’s "courage" for reporting the "racial incident" and put out a clear message. But by Wednesday afternoon, the investigation by MSU Police revealed there was no noose. Instead, they found "the object was a packaged leather shoelace and not a noose," MSU spokesman Jason Cody said in a news release, adding that the shoelaces "are packaged in a way that someone could perceive them to look similar to a noose."

 

Police issue warrant for black man beaten at Charlottesville rally | 11 Oct 2017 | A black man who was beaten at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, has been charged with an alleged assault during that confrontation, police said Monday. DeAndre Harris, 20, was charged with unlawful wounding in the Aug. 12 rally that turned violent. Harris was seen bloodied in viral photos and a video after being attacked during the rally in August. Lt. Stephen Upman says the alleged victim told the magistrate's office, a judicial office in Virginia, what happened. The magistrate contacted police, Upman said, who verified facts and issued the warrant.

 

In victory for Trump, Supreme Court dismisses travel ban case | 10 Oct 2017 | The Supreme Court dismissed a major challenge to President Trump's travel ban on majority-Muslim countries Tuesday because it has been replaced by a new version, sending the controversy back to the starting block. The ruling is a victory for the Trump administration, which had asked the court to drop the case after Trump signed a proclamation Sept. 24 that replaced the temporary travel ban on six nations with a new, indefinite ban affecting eight countries. That action made the court challenge moot, the justices ruled.

 

E.P.A. Announces Repeal of Major Obama-Era Carbon Emissions Rule | 10 Oct 2017 | The Environmental Protection Agency announced on Tuesday that Scott Pruitt, the chief of the agency, had signed a measure to repeal President Barack Obama's signature policy to curb greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, setting up a bitter fight over the future of America's efforts to tackle global warming. Mr. Pruitt, who had signaled the move at an event with coal miners in eastern Kentucky on Monday, said in a news release that his predecessors had departed from regulatory norms in writing the Clean Power Plan, which was finalized in 2015 and would have pushed states to move away from coal in favor of sources of electricity that produce fewer carbon emissions.

 

Trump administration rolls back ObamaCare contraceptive mandate | 06 Oct 2017 | The Trump administration on Friday announced a major rollback of the ObamaCare contraceptive mandate, granting what officials called "full protection" to a wide range of companies and organizations that claim a "religious or moral objection" to providing the coverage. The decision swiftly ignited a new battle over the Affordable Care Act. Republican lawmakers and faith-based groups hailed the decision as a win for religious liberty, while Democratic officials and groups like Planned Parenthood accused the administration of attacking women's rights. By early afternoon, the American Civil Liberties Union announced it was filing a lawsuit challenging the change.

 

House Democrat unveils articles of impeachment against Trump, but misses chance to force vote | 11 Oct 2017 | Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) on Wednesday unveiled articles of impeachment against President Trump in an effort to force a House vote on removing him from office. Green's articles of impeachment were introduced as "privileged," meaning that they must be considered on the House floor within two legislative days. But when the GOP presiding officer moved to begin the process to consider the resolution less than an hour later, Green did not show up. The resolution was therefore not offered and is not getting an imminent vote.

 

After delay, Clinton and Obamas criticize Weinstein | 11 Oct 2017 | Former President Obama and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton both denounced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein on Tuesday as allegations of rape and sexual harassment increased against the prominent Democratic donor. The critical statements came roughly five days [!] after the scandal broke and as the leading Democrats faced mounting criticism from Republicans for staying on the sidelines. Ronna Romney McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, took swipes via social media at both Clinton and Michelle Obama. "So Michelle Obama speaks out against women in the @GOP, but won't stand up for the women assaulted by Weinstein?" she questioned on Twitter.

 

Harvey Weinstein accused of rape by three women | 10 Oct 2017 | Three women have accused the film mogul Harvey Weinstein of rape, escalating the flurry of claims levelled at the producer and raising fresh questions about who within Hollywood was aware of what was allegedly taking place over more than 20 years. The women, two who agreed to be identified and one who spoke anonymously, told an American magazine that the producer of [well-regarded] movies forcibly performed or received one sex act, and forced another on them. The allegations, which Mr Weinstein has denied, follow claims made last week that the co-founder of Miramar Films had settled claims from eight women who accused him of sexual harassment.

 

Harvey Weinstein Paid Off Sexual Harassment Accusers for Decades | 05 Oct 2017 | An investigation by The New York Times found previously undisclosed allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein stretching over nearly three decades, documented through interviews with current and former employees and film industry workers, as well as legal records, emails and internal documents from the businesses he has run, Miramax and the Weinstein Company. During that time, after being confronted with allegations including sexual harassment and unwanted physical contact, Mr. Weinstein has reached at least eight settlements with women, according to two company officials speaking on the condition of anonymity...A longtime Democratic donor, he hosted a fund-raiser for Hillary Clinton in his Manhattan home last year. He employed Malia Obama, the oldest daughter of former President Barack Obama, as an intern this year, and recently helped endow a faculty chair at Rutgers University in Gloria Steinem's name.

 

At least 23 dead in horrific California wildfires, hundreds missing --The causes of the fires are unknown. | 11 Oct 2017 | Massive wildfires sweeping through California have killed at least 23 people and damaged thousands of homes, businesses and other buildings, authorities said. Firefighters were still battling 22 wildfires in multiple California counties Wednesday. Intensified by strong winds, the flames have charred about 170,000 acres of land, damaged or destroyed at least 3,500 structures and forced nearly 20,000 residents to evacuate, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

 

California Fires Lay Waste to 140,000 Acres and Rage On | 10 Oct 2017 | The fires ravaging California's wine country since Sunday night -- part of an outbreak of blazes stretching almost the entire length of the state -- continued to burn out of control on Wednesday, as the toll rose to at least 21 people confirmed dead, hundreds hospitalized, and thousands of buildings destroyed or damaged. But state and local officials warned that with several hundred people still missing and unaccounted for, and some areas still out of reach of emergency crews, those figures are almost certain to rise. The two biggest and most destructive fires had consumed more than 70,000 acres in Napa and Sonoma Counties by Wednesday morning, up from 52,000 on Tuesday afternoon, according to Cal Fire, the state's firefighting agency. In all, six fires had burned more than 91,000 acres in the two counties, and Cal Fire rated all but the smallest of them as 3 percent contained, or less.

Nate has sustained winds of 85 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane. [Previous story, published at 11:57 p.m. ET] Hurricane Nate made US landfall Saturday night as a Category 1 storm near the mouth of the Mississippi River in southeast Louisiana, the National Hurricane Center said.
