CounterCurrents: Trump Puts Israel First With UNESCO Withdrawal

Dear Friend,

USA has withdrawn from UNESCO. It's not Trump's “America First” foreign policy that prompted this, rather it was the "Israel First'' policy that prompted it.

The recent California fires and many other environmental disasters have woken up the world to the imminent danger of Climate Change. Sally Dugman connects the dots today. By the way, that's the primary objective of Countercurrents.

Also more stories from around the world.

If you don't mind, and if you think the content of this news letter is critical for the dignified living and survival of humanity and other species on earth, please forward it to your friends and spread the word. by Ali Abunimah

Donald Trump’s “America First” foreign policy was on full display Thursday when the State Department announced that the United States is withdrawing from UNESCO over the United Nations cultural body’s supposed “anti-Israel bias.”

Wildfires, Hurricanes, Tornadoes!
by Sally Dugman

Many people can’t seem to wrap their minds around the idea that if we want lessening climate change problems and curtailment of other sorts of devastation like massive spills and air pollution, we need to use less fossil fuels. We also have to stop taking away more and more of the natural world for economic development, stop personally using up ever more resources to climb up the socio-economic ladder and stop increasing the human population. After all more people will require more and more jobs provided based on further gobbling up the biosphere, as well as even more resources in use..

Dalit Girl Paraded As ‘Thief’ In Nepal
by Asian Human Rights Commission

In Nepal a distressing case of caste discrimination saw a 14-year-old Dalit girl paraded in Belbari Municipality-2 of Morang district with shoes around her neck, soot smeared on her face, and the tag of ‘thief’ stuck on her body. She was also beaten with nettle greens, causing her body to swell. Although the police have arrested seven persons, the girl now fears to stay in the village, where there is a strong chance of her being socially ostracized.

Affirmative Action In Temple Appointments: Kerala Shows The Way
by Thumakunta Vasantha

Temple appointments come as an answer to how Kerala is different. The temple appointments only show that while the Hindutva forces take the route of continuation of traditional caste pattern in the rest of the country, in Kerala the priority is to end the reservation system for priesthood exclusively for Brahmins. Non-Brahmins and Dalits are equally eligible for the same. The action should go beyond. There should be a day when even when women not only get temple entry but also get appointed as temple priests in Kerala. Rather than targeting Kerala, the Hindutva forces need to adopt lessons from Kerala. Appointment of non-brahmins and Dalits as priests in their own states can be the starting point.

A Refreshing Introduction To Islam
by Moin Qazi

I recently came across a wonderful introduction to Islam titled Islam Is Good: Muslims Should Follow It by Sanjiv Bhatla that compresses encyclopedic insights in a small volume. His study of the Prophet is primarily based on Martin Lings’ book. For the Quran’s interpretation, he relies on the translation by Maulana Wahiduddin Khan and supplements it with that of Abdullah Yusuf li.

Deendayal Upadhyaya : ‘BJP’s Gandhi’ !
by Subhash Gatade

As we go to the press reports are coming in from different parts of the country that ICONISATION of Deendayal Upadhyaya is moving ahead with feverish speed. Anyone can predict that it is just a beginning. If they can have the audacity of saying that it is lie that Akbar defeated Rana Pratap more than 450 years ago rather Rana Pratap defeated Akbar – discounting all historical evidence – who can stop them from claiming that someone against Hindu Muslim unity can be easily equated with other who sacrificed his life at the altar of Hindu Muslim unity.

Crime
by K P Sasi

No God can punish more
And no God can save.
This walk can only be beautiful
With a determined act of walking
The destination can be empty
But those who walk
Need not feel guilty
For their crime
Of being born as human.

Retired School Principal Honoured For Keeping The Story Of A Muslim Freedom Fighter Alive

The Vancouver-based Indians Abroad for Pluralist India (IAPI) honoured Sarwan Singh Aujla, a retired school principal from Punjab and an author for keeping the story of Rehamt Ali Wajidke alive. Wajidke was a member of the Ghadar Party that was formed in North America in 1913 by the Indian immigrants to fight back against British occupation of their home country and racism abroad. He was hanged in 1915 for his participation in the conspiracy to overthrow the British Empire after returning to India.
